  • The DC Deck-Building Game is getting a major new entry in the form of Rebirth! True to its name, this title takes the original game's core mechanics and adds a campaign, along with a brand new set of cards. How did these changes affect our opinions of this longstanding series?

Have you guys ever checked out Street Masters from Blacklist Games. I feel like you'd like the story mode with adding cards to your deck and you progress through a short campaign / story.

I wasn't really into the original DC Deck Builder because how the theme worked with the mechanics was really wonky, the game seemed a bit unbalanced, and also seemed rather simplistic, but this Rebirth looks like it fixes some of those problems, so after all these years, I might just give this one a shot.

I have a question, between this and the crisis set for the base set which would you recommend for a solo/co-op experience? I know their are differences such as the special element of moving around and such but I’ve head that crisis can be very long and “boring” without some house rules and was curious as to what your opinion is? Thanks and happy gaming!

While there are some small differences I feel the campaign aspect will be the biggest factor in choosing between the two. On the Co-op front: Crisis works better with a more varied group because it's an expansion to the base, meaning you could play a co-op one day and go back to the normal version a different day. If you have a consistent group that enjoys campaigns, Rebirth is definitely the strong choice. Even though it's not the most in-depth campaign with a vast skill tree, you will still enjoy the small story and seeing how which locations survive or get destroyed through the campaign.
Solo-wise...to be honest, neither game would be my go-to pick now for a solo deckbuilding experience. I would probably choose Rebirth because you just control another pawn keeping one deck while in Crisis I just simulate a two-player game by controlling two different heroes.

@@RollforCrit Thank you for the response! I have and love Star Realms (Frontiers specifically for solo and co-op) and wanted something in a theme I love that has a little more depth. I know legendary is highly recommended (I'm kinda burnt out on the Marvel stuff tbh and am much more of a DC guy) but I have been looking at the DC deckbuilding game for a while (this one and crisis) but as previously mentioned I do have some worries. Thanks again and keep up the great work!

Star Realms definitely did a great job with their solo mode! Depth wise the DC deckbuilding game really sticks to the core mechanics for deckbuilding. This makes it great for bringing new people to the table who have never played a deck-builder, but may seem bland to those who have played many. Rebirth is going to probably feel like the more involved version, with the only main problem is its harder for it to mix with other sets. Weirdly enough the best one would probably be the Attack on Titans set, as it included cards with the move keyword. That said I have never tried the two together.

I loved to see a playthrough of this game

The set up looks a good deal messier than previous games. I wonder if it takes time to get used to how everything looks, or if maybe this game just would really benefit from a proper playmat to show everything in its place.

Hello, can this be played solo?

good comment! Hmmm .... this about random cards will prevent me from buying this one. The whole deck building mostly has some random and lucky points, but with this review, it looks like this game has a much larger dependence on luck that it should be IMO (:

While I didnt go to gencon, a friend of mine did and he got me a copy of this. No promo scenario I'm afraid.

    1. Are you not required to play villains? That ruined the original for me. 2. Who are the playable characters? If there isn't one you want can you use one from an earlier set?

      1) Villains you defeat no longer go in your deck. 2) Superman, Wonder Woman, Flash, Cyborg, Aquaman, Batman, Jessica Cruz, and Simon Baz. You can use other superheroes for oneshots, but not the campaign mode.

this looks good. Is it faster to set up than Legendary Marvel? It's one of the things I loathe about that game. If this game is better than DC Deckbuilder version 1, and is faster to set up than Legendary, TELL ME!!!!

I just played it the first time this weekend and having played Legendary in the past this game is much faster to set up. Pick 5 of 7 location cards. Place weakness stack. Build main stack in five parts with two supervillains per part and deal five cards to five spaces between locations. Put threat track at zero. Pick your heroes. Simple starting deck of ten cards. Box is organized well. I'd guess next time I can setup in 5 minutes or less.

I kind of feel like this can feel sluggish, very much like the core game and some of its expansions. I’ve tried the DC deck builder, but it was so slow I found it boring. So I walked away not liking the Cerberus system at all. I wanted to love the DC deck builder, but my experience was meh...
Is this stand alone any different, aside from the new stuff introduced?

Looking through the rulebook, I suspect the game length is probably just as long as the original sets. The thing that I think might elevate this version, and make the length more tolerable, is the number of decisions available to you. In the original games it was a pretty simple "let's buy the most expensive card I can every single turn." This new version will have you weighing that against how far away other cards are, where the villains are positioned, etc. So I suspect the game will still be long, but hopefully more interesting to keep players engaged.

@@stricklinr Just played yesterday for the first time. I find it more interesting than the base game. The cooperative coordination is key. It did take the three of us about 2-3 hours to play it. We won the first scenario but only one turn before the game ended.

@@jimzecca3961 Yeah I've played a little over half the campaign at this point. Definitely more to chew on than in the base game. It doesn't come together perfectly but it's a fun iteration on the system.
