Years ago, my husband and I had adopted our first son and wanted to adopt another child. I'll never forget a young man, perhaps 14 or 15, who knew why he was being filmed. He looked into the camera and said something like: "Don't be afraid of me. I know I'm big and strong, but I'm really gentle. I don't do drugs and try my hardest at school. I'll help around the house, take out the garbage, keep my room clean. I want to belong to a family, to love them, and be loved by them. I want to share my life with them, have a place to go on the holidays, people to invite to my graduation. My older brother has aged out of the system and he's on the streets. I don't want this to happen to me." As our child was a toddler at the time, the system didn't allow us to adopt this boy. His memory still brings tears to my eyes. I pray for him. If you have the energy, my third child is currently an exhausting teenager, you clearly have the love.
