Keep in mind that the Joker has no moral compass. He does whatever he wants to to screw with people. One of the scariest Joker stories ever written was one in the eighties (and it's not the one most people will think of). The scariest Joker story was one where the Joker kidnapped a little girl. Batman went all over Gotham, beating up everyone to find her location, but he knew she was dead because the Joker killed everyone. But he still wanted to find the girl and bring her body home. He finally found her in the trunk of a car at the bottom of Gotham Bay. He opened the trunk...and she was inside, alive, with a breathing mask on and a full tank of oxygen. He took her home. She was fine. Scared, but fine. Batman went to the Joker and asked him why he didn't kill the girl, and the Joker told him something along the lines of "Because now you'll never know if someone is alive or dead." He kept the girl alive just to mess with Batman's thinking. That's DARK.

You notice how Joker keeps giving himself different backstories for "how he got his scars"? This is actually a key part of Joker's character. One of his most famous lines in the comics is "If I'm going to have a past, I'd prefer it to be multiple choice."

To top it off, I loved when he tried it on Batman at the end and Batman just went "I DONT CARE!"

Heath Ledger had the performance of a lifetime so he completely overshadowed everyone. But because of that, Aaron Eckhart's performance as Harvey Dent often gets overlooked. He did such a fantastic job with the character, the last scene with him always gives me chills. "It's not about what I want, it's about what's fair!"
"You thought we could be decent men in an indecent time! But you were wrong."
"Tell your boy it's going to be alright, Gordon. Lie. Like I lied." Simply an amazing performance
I actually prefer Maggie Gyllenhaal's acting over Katie Holmes but I can understand how jarring it must be to see different actresses playing the same character between films.
And yes now to watch The Dark Knight Rises to finish off the trilogy! Can't wait for the reaction!

THANK YOU! I was going to make the same comment but you beat me to it. It seems like Two-Face is always presented in one of three ways after the disfigurement; either he's given an entirely new personality, or he's given a split personality (I can see the temptation to go this route but if you aren't very careful it comes across as rather on-the-nose) or you can do what Eckhart & Nolan did which is to keep him the same man but with a psychotic compulsion- I think this is the most interesting approach but also the hardest to pull off. You can see the Harvey Dent in Eckharts Two-Face performance but he's been tragically broken.

Fun Fact: Heath Ledger directed both homemade videos that The Joker sends to GCN. The first video involving the fake Batman was done under writer, producer, and director Christopher Nolan's supervision. Nolan thought Ledger had done so well with that sequence, he felt there was no need for him to be there when it came time to film the scene where reporter Mike Engel reads The Joker's statement. He put his trust in Ledger and let him do whatever he wanted, ultimately pleased with the result after he'd seen the outcome.

Slightly off topic but this is why I also love Superman comics. Superman also deals with human nature. Batman said that Clark (Superman) is an alien yet the most human out of everyone. The main theses of the Superman story is being able to do the right thing even with all the power. Power corrupts? No, power reveals the truth nature. After all, if you had infinite power, answered to no one and no one could stop you, then nothing can prevent you from exposing your truth nature. You have no consequences. All the power in the universe yet Superman is a good man at heart. Batman said Superman is a good man deep down while he is not. Batman doesn’t kill because he’s afraid that if he does then he will never stop killing again. He’ll never return from the abyss. Superman however doesn’t kill because it’s the right thing to do. He can get away with anything and yet he is the gold standard for a good human being. Humble and selfless. Abe Lincoln had an amazing quote “if you want to test a mans true character give him power”. That’s the core of the Superman story.
      Sorry for the essay lol

@@appledough3843 Absolutely. This is why it irks me when people say Superman is a “boring” character. He’s without a doubt one of the most fascinating characters in all of comics.
There’s so much subtext to his story - it’s an immigrant coming-of-age tale (as you said, he’s an alien but in many ways the ultimate example of humanity and actual American values)…
…it’s an exploration of nature vs. nurture (if anyone other than Jon and Martha Kent found that boy in the cornfield, he could’ve grown up to be an unstoppable tyrant)…
…it’s a tale about theism vs humanism (see: every good Lex Luthor storyline)…
…it’s about the unbearable responsibility that being Superman places onto Clark (he can’t be everywhere, there are scenes in the comics where he explains that every life he saves leads to the loss of countless more. If he’s stopping a bank robbery in Metropolis, it means he can’t be on the other side of the world when a tsunami hits and kills thousands. He’s often paralyzed by indecision because so many people need help and even with all the powers in the world, Superman can’t save them all)…
I could go on. Superman critics like to say that he’s boring “because he can’t die so there are no stakes.” Without even going into the fact that *NO* superhero can ever really die because they have plot armor and they’re a franchise unto themselves, without even going into the fact that Superman *HAS* died (multiple times) this is still such a dumb argument. The comics (and some of the better movies) use Superman’s invulnerability / potential immortality to put him through very unique internal character struggles. He can’t die, but those around him can and often do, and he has no escape from it. He can’t go with them. On some level he knows it’s his fate to outlive everyone he loves and watch them die while he barely ages at all.
But yeah, Superman is “boring.” 🤦‍♂️

It isn't his fault that evil goes on in the world but he places some blame on himself for not being able to stop it all. That is an issue only a man with a heart of gold could have. The two boats with the "innocent civilians" and the "guilty convicts" being made to decide which will die only to reveal that the convicts were the first to refuse to kill is brilliant. It showed that even who we perceive as the most vile and dangerous can have light within them and perhaps an audience which this expecting them to kill has a bit of darkness within them.

It's a common thought, but I don't think it's accurate. First, because it's a very unreliable way to keep a gun from firing, which is why de-cocking maneuvers involve putting a digit between the hammer and the chamber, to physically prevent contact. Second, because the Joker's hand isn't positioned well for that purpose, being not perpendicular, but off to the side. And third, because the Joker is, as you said, meticulous. He would be quite happy to die here, just as he was ready to allow Batman to run him down, as it would prove his point; people are only as moral as the situation allows them to be. Joker would be dead, but Harvey would be a murderer, and that would be the end of Gotham's hope.
Joker doesn't have a plan as such. He doesn't have a concrete final outcome in mind. What he does is place people in moral quandaries, and allow them to make their choice. As far as I can tell, the only time he lies is when he reverses Harvey's and Rachel's locations. His purpose is not entirely clear, but I think it's to force Batman to choose between himself and Gotham, and still lose whichever he holds dearest. The point being to push Batman into breaking his rule, and thus prove the Joker correct.
The fact that Batman chooses Rachel over Harvey is interesting, and not really made a lot of. It would seem Bruce Wayne hadn't been entirely subsumed by Batman then.

@@michaelccozens You put a digit between the hammer and primer, as you said, when de-cocking, this is because the hammer is moving toward the primer and you don't want it to discharge. However it's incredibly simple to prevent the hammer from falling when the trigger is pulled, you just hold it back, it doesn't take any special technique or strength, you literally just keep a finger on the hammer

I think what one of the most jarring aspects of the movie is that the ending doesn't provide closure. It doesn't give us satisfaction. It looks like evil has won. I love this movie (not because I think evil has won but because reality tells us that evil doesn't necessarily have to lose). This is a very well grounded movie.

This movie perfectly demonstrates the darker and grittier take on superhero movies as compared to the MCU which tends to be more fun and uplifting. It's really a matter of personal preference in tone. But this is probably the best example of how to do a realistic and terrifying version of Batman and the Joker.

I can't help but think that that uneasy feeling from the beginning of the film may have been at least partly due to the phenomenal way in which the score evokes tension from the very first note (that dragging, discordant string note that keeps running through so much of the score was intended to create unease in the audience, as I understand it). It's awesome when these things happen without our noticing.

Nolan himself debunked this rumor. He said there was a planned added “beat” by the demolition team in between the two sets of explosions where the Joker thinks it failed and then it continues on. It’s a better story that he improvised it but unfortunately not true. Just like the picture of him in costume kickflipping over Bale laying on the ground in costume. He actually just jumped over him but then someone photoshopped a skateboard in. Again, one is definitely more appealing but just not true.

Heath Ledger's Joker is easily the most perfect iteration of the character, although Joaquin Phoenix's comes in a very, VERY close second.
The old guy that Joker threatens at the fundraiser is Vt. Senator Patrick Leahy, the longest-sitting member of Congress, and a HUGE Batman fan.
Heath keeps licking the sides of his mouth because the scar prosthetics kept coming loose, and he found that licking them kept them on, so he worked that into the craziness of the character, like a tic he has.
Christopher Nolan also prefers practical effects wherever they can be used over CGI, so they really flipped a tractor trailer, and also blew up that hospital (it was scheduled for demolition anyway so they got permission to do it for the film). And yes, Christian Bale is full on punching Heath Ledger, who asked him to do it for the realism of his performance.
