CLIP DESCRIPTION:
Master Li (Rongguang Yu) forces his student (Shijia L) to break the rules and hurt Dre (Jaden Smith) badly.
FILM DESCRIPTION:
When a 12-year-old from Detroit moves to China with his mother and incurs the wrath of the class bully at his new school, he makes an unlikely ally in the form of his aging maintenance man, a kung fu master who teaches him the secrets to self-defense. Upon arriving at his new school, Dre Parker (Jaden Smith) develops a powerful crush on pretty classmate Mei Ying. The feeling is mutual, although the cultural divide between Dre and Mei Ying makes a friendship unlikely, and romance impossible. When cruel classmate and kung fu prodigy Cheng learns of Dre's feelings for Mei Ying, he harasses and humiliates the young outsider in front of the entire school. With no one to turn to for help, Dre confides his fears in kindly maintenance man Mr. Han (Jackie Chan), a kung fu master who knows that serenity and maturity -- not punches and power -- are the true keys to mastering the martial arts. As Dre prepares to face down his intimidating tormentor, he begins to realize that the real fight is just beginning.

Looking at Liang after getting disqualified, he looks ashamed of himself for doing that to Dre which is something I've always noticed.
ikr thats what i was saying. he looked like he felt really bad, i think he was only doing it because master li told him to
Alex03600 I completely forgot about when Master Li does that in the film to one of the students, that's a very good point!
Alex03600 oh yeah i remember that part! good point!
Erupt he is sad because he got disqualified
From the beginning most of them just wanted to knock Dre around and leave him alone. They didn't want to torture him. Their master was evil in its near purest form.

I feel terrible for him tbh he really didn’t want to hurt him
@Anthony Even though it's a movie, we can still analyse it.
But at least Bobby tried to apologize to Daniel, directly after his attack lol
@Anthony exactly, don't even bother the people here, they are so heartfelt
Look at liangs eyes when the ref told him your disqualified, he looked so hurt inside and looked so shameful of what he had ultimately just had done. Great acting.
i Love that guy Liang. You know my mani love him All my heart ❤❤❤❤.

Liang showed mercy when no one else would (Tried to stop the main bad kid when he wanted to beat him), Liang showed bravery when everyone else gave up (Still wanted to fight Jackie after everyone was beaten up), and he showed loyalty even when he knew what he was doing was wrong. (this scene)
That poor kid had so much to him! He even felt incredibly ashamed when he did this! :( What a guy! The statement is true, there are no bad students, only bad teacher..
I love this comment
Liang wasn’t the one who showed mercy when they beat Dre it was the other kid, and he also wasn’t the one who wanted to keep fighting Jackie, it was the other kid too

He could have not hurt Dre. If it were me I’d tell my mom how abusive master lee is
You can tell by the look of Liang's eyes and face that he has a heart, and does not want to literally break Dre; he had no choice but to obey his so-called "Master"
The unfortunate part of being raised to obey your elders and teachers is that one can forget that they do have a choice. They may give you the instruction, but you can choose to disobey it. Liang suffered the consequence for failing to make the right and honorable choice.
@@danielhaire6677 I'd say its less that and more how that master treated his students when they disobeyed.....
Its cool that Jackie Chan knew it wasn't Liang's fault and didn't look at him, but looked at Master Li instead because he knew that he was the one who told Liang to do it.
Exactly
It was Liang's fault as much as it was Li's fault. Liang chose to follow Li's instructions do break Dre.
@@secondchances1232 When his students don't obey, Master Li hits them. If you recall, he hit Liang when he hesitated during training.

Right especially for doing something he clearly didn't want to do
I know. No wonder why Mr. Han looked at Master Li like that: he knows it’s all of his fault. NEVER Liang’s.
this scene makes u feel bad for liang, you can tell he felt bad and didn’t want to hurt dre but he did it because of master li.
Yep. It was either that, or he was going to get slapped after the tournament.

I feel bad for Liang. You could see how sorry he was. He was the guy that tried to save Dre at the beginning of the film too.
That was Zhuang.
He’s a pastor now

I really liked Dre's Semi Finals opponent. He was the one that tried to hold Cheng back, saying, "he's had enough", and even here, not wanting to go thru with his masters orders, but did it, and ended up being DQ'ed and feeling really about doing that to Dre. He was a good kid from the start, just being misguided by the wrong people!

Yeah I was shocked when I found out so many people didn't like this movie. I fell in love with it the first time I saw it. To this day it is still one if my favorite films.
The movie was total trash and was just a poor remake of the karate kid just with kung fu. That is just a more terrible version of the Bobby Scene from Karate Kid.
I literally came here to tell the same thing but the movie wasn’t trash it was pretty good it was just inspired by karate kid they didn’t copy it

Wtf

I think this scene has a lot more subtext than many people realize.
In Chinese society and culture, a teacher is a highly regarded and respected profession, and many Chinese actually hold teachers at the same high regard as parents, which is a huge deal in Chinese culture since the Chinese really value filial piety.
Which is why you often see things in Chinese culture (and many Asian cultures) that don't make much sense to Western cultures, such as a child's obedience to parents, always be respectful to your seniors and elders etc.
I do agree sometimes these values can be too entrenched and can often cause more harm than good if the teacher/parent himself has bad intentions or is just a bad human being overall. In this scene you can see that Liang is truly conflicted about his teacher's orders, but due to the highly entrenched filial piety values in Chinese society and culture, he is compelled to do what the teacher says, even feeling tremendous guilt and shame after he got disqualified.
Hope it's not a crime for me to like this movie better than the original
nah. It's your opinion, so you're all goods. But be careful where you put it, cuz some people get triggered easily.

Nchoo. I wish i was a girl I was going dat her Liang.
2:02 He looks like he is saying "geez man!"

That's a bad teacher!
Vinh Nguyen Like you really felt so sorry for him
John Kreese and Terry Silver are worse. So was Colonel Dugan in the one with Hilary Swank
There is no such thing as a bad student but a bad teacher
I feel like this master was worse than Krease because he said “I want him broken” rather than Krease’s saying of “Sweep the leg”.
The differense is that Kreese didn't need to say it. It was implied and shown in their acting.
Kreese's "sweep the leg" to Johnh was in the final, when Daniel had already been injured at the semi-final (at the leg) due again to Kreese's instruction to Bobby "I want him out of commision [...] I don't want him beaten. Out of commision." Again this follows pretty closely to the original Karate Kid.
Kreese nearly kills johnny
I’m so mad because liang knew he could’ve won this fight but his Sensei said “break him” sorry liang😔

Master Li : *Under his breath* (Gooood....)

Master Li : What,i did nothing...
That's why Liang Zihao was disqualified so when Dre Parker was injured his leg, he wins by default and advanced to finals in Open Kung Fu Tournament to face Cheng
The lower you bow to someone, the more respect it shows you have for that person! Dre already had Liang's Full respect before the match, and that is what made the position Liang was in, that much more difficult to watch.
You can tell the kid walked off with shame. He didn't wanna do it but he still had to.
i saw liang have tears becuse he felt sorry for dre
So many people saying liang was the kid that told Cheng to show mercy when they were beating up Dre when it was the kid that Dre faced in the quarters (Zhuang) 😂

'There is no such thing as a bad student just a bad teacher' Mr miyagi
I fought in my first (and only) taekwondo tournament when I was 16-17, back then I was over-confident and reckless (dumb teenager phase) and I got my ass handed to me big time (although I landed some good blows) but that to me was my biggest revelation, that I was not as good as I thought I was, i lost my desire for tournaments and focused solely on honing my mind and spirit, philosophy, calligraphy, histpry and the arts, I learned from that tournament what was truly important in martial arts, it's not the fighting and combat, but it's the self-enlightenment, and mental/spiritual growth u gain from studying the art to its core and origins, too many schools focus too much on tournaments and fighting anymore, and it's a shame because it means that true martial arts is dying and will be reduced into a sport and no longer be an art anymore
Chase Colgan you are correct I like your comment
Good story with a great real life moral. It's true what they say, no one learns by winning but a thousand lessons are taught by defeat (paraphrased quite a bit). As for Martial Arts, I'm positive that many learn them for self-defense and enlightenment.
The problem is the master, I feel bad for those kids who have to follow his order
Master Li Abuses Them a Lot So Master Li Wants Liang To Get Disqualified By Breaking Dre's Knee or Get Slapped By The Teacher Himself
This translation is incorrect. It's not. "I do not want him beaten. I want him broken". It's, "I do not want you to beat him (as in fight him and win). I want you to hurt him (as in physically injure him)".
Unfortunately, there are bullies like Master Li in reality, thats probably why a lot of people who take karate too seriously end up being too hostile and abusing their karate methods for what its not supposed to be used for. This guy is just like a mean teacher.
