  • Welcome to Wonderhussy Adventure #591
    Date of adventure: 11/30/21
    Hiking to an extremely remote historic mine camp in Death Valley with my friend Jenni. Since the road was closed in 1994, the only way to get to these cabins is on foot -- and it's a tough hike! We made it...but Jenni's experience of the hike was a LOT different from mine!

    The last time I checked, when you go hiking with a friend, you are supposed to actually hike with said friend.... Not a mile out in front of her, just in case something bad actually happened, one friend could maybe save a friends life :)

      I can understand the excuse that WH had to hike back down, so she would have gone back to the friend at some point. But in the desert a hiker can get sick real fast and need aid (water, cooled down with wet cloth, etc). WH should have stayed with the friend.

    I have a book titled "Death Valley Jeep Trails" by Roger Mitchell, c. 1969. On pages 23 and 24 is a chapter on "Jean LeMoign's retreat". He had the nickname "Cap" and when he was getting old. decided to make a trip to the outside world. He never made it, and none other than Death Valley Scotty discovered his body and the bodies of two mules. Scotty buried him there, near Salt Creek.

    Poor Jenny! I'm so glad she was okay. I know how bad that feels. I once had Heat Exhaustion (the first stage of Heat Stroke, btw) while hiking up from the bottom of the Grand Canyon going up to the North Rim. I had to squeeze in between two tall boulders which was the only shade available, and drank two full liters of Gook-n-aide in water. Yes I was nauseated but after staying between my boulders, I managed to get past the Sipapu Tunnel and my BFF and I took a nap in the shade. Its can be a scary experience. But I made it! So I can actually say I hiked the Grand Canyon Rim to rim. The hard way, since we started our hike from the South Rim to the North Rim. The south Rim elevation is around 7000 feet and the north Rim is over 9000 feet. Loved it. You should try it. And an OBW, the tarantula was probably a female since she was in a burrow. Since she didn't come out, unsure what her species was. Maybe, an Aphonapelma calchodes (Arizona Blonde) or an Aphonapelma iodius (Great Basin Tarantula). 👍 Good find, Sarah!

  • @shaftermike
    @shaftermike Před 2 lety +18

    Heatstroke can also cause imbalance of electrolytes since you lose a lot of salts in sweating. Eat prunes, salami, nuts, salty stuff. Remember the little family in Mariposa that died this summer while on an eight mile hike? When they started hiking at 8 am it was 70. A few hours later, when they hit the uphill coming back, the temp was 108 and they were on an exposed southeast facing slope, no shade. This stuff can sneak up on you. Anyway, thanks for another interesting adventure!

( Think of hiking 5 miles with cactus needles , glass or a splinter in toe or foot ! ) Snake bite stuff too. Always extra water...! Neat video! Love the places to take us ! Feel sorry for your friend who had to barf !

  • @beepseatsfindingfoodtreasu8756

    Glad Jenny was ok. That would have been awful if she wasnt able to hike out. But she did the smart thing and cooled off. And she did make a great suggestion. A set of radios around old mines is a good idea. And when hiking never loose sight of your members. An injury can always happen and nobody wants to come up on a friend who's been hurt without help. Makes for a bad day all the way around. But it all worked out this time so you'll be better prepped for the next adventure. Be safe folks

    • @2pi628
      @2pi628 Před 2 lety +12

      Yes, it can be very dangerous in the desert. I once thought I would just scramble up to the top of "Picacho Peak" in the middle of the summer. It's located between Tucson and Phoenix on I-10. "it's a 1500 foot elevation gain, and only a mile and a half trip" said the park ranger.... that almost killed me. Ha Ha. I mistook the "mile and a half" for ROUND TRIP. That was to the top -- only. If you have ever seen the bugs bunny cartoon where he was struggling dehydrated through the desert --- now you know what I looked like.😅
      Deserts can be deadly.

Pretty cool graffiti on the walls, written no doubt before anyone thought better of it, or thought to place a notebook there. Cool old digs. It is sooo good to see Jenni and Wonderhussy together again. I have followed Jenni since the last time you both did your last video together. Jenni has been a lot of fun on her videos. Sarah has a very good friend in Jenni. Yes, for sure, God loves Jenni, and probably Wonderhussy Sarah too.

      To: @@JenniGives Hi Jenni. You commented to me on Sarah's video. I was concerned for you on your difficult hike to the cabins. I did notice that you had coverings on your legs and Sarah did not. Could that have added to you being overheated? Just a thought. Any way, Of course God Loves Sarah, there was never any doubt about that. I just wanted to express that God Loves you Jenni, for sure. All things considered. Lots of Love and respect, James

    Good hike .. I have to count on you to get to these places as my hiking days are over. So the video's are really appreciated. I did make it to the Ubehebe Mine just before Thanksgiving .. more to test out the Crosstrek than anything. 🤠

    Another winner!! Thanks for the interesting hike even if the cabin wasn't one of your most outstanding ones. And, the Amargosa Hotel at the beginning brings back some memories of days gone by. I hate to say it, because I understand your perspective, but it's nice to see the earrings back in the last couple of videos.
