Welcome to DIY gamer. The show where I teach you how to make your own professional grade gaming equipment. Today's video is about scuf gaming controllers/ Xbox Elite Controllers. A part and tool list is below. Please Rate, comment, and subscribe!
+++UPDATE+++
I found a better place to wire the "A" Button. You no longer have to take out the front board (LED/ "A" Board), only the Thumb-stick board or "B" board. Check the link below for more information. adf.ly/hCu73
A better way to remove excess hotglue is to soak it with rubbing alcohol, safer than using a lighter.
Parts:
Tact Switch, 9.5mm High x2 (adf.ly/e3rhh 4x $4.99) (adf.ly/e3rot 100x $3)
Plastic Spoon or Fork x2 (Free, Got mine from TacoBell)
16-28 AWG Wire (If you're having trouble finding wire this will work adf.ly/i6CIe)
Several small screws
-------
Tools: (Ask your neighbors or family if they have these tools before buying)
Torx T8 Security (adf.ly/e3u28 $3.49)
Torx T7 (adf.ly/e3wL3 $4.99)
Soldering Iron (adf.ly/e3wTn $14.48 Great starter kit)
Solder
Hotglue Gun (adf.ly/e3wey $8.10)
Power Drill (adf.ly/e3wjq $27.75)
Small Philips Driver
Masking Tape
Ruler
Wire Stripper/Cutter (adf.ly/e3xOs $7.92)
Sharpie
Xacto Knife (adf.ly/e3xkT $6.55)
3/16 (Buttons) and 5/64 (Triggers) Drill Bits (adf.ly/e3xoN $5.88)
If you need a Screw Driver, this is the set I use. (Does not include T8 Security Driver)

damn..... it must feel good to have such technical knowledge
Yea you just need to practice. I can do this without the tutorial it's just fun to watch.
How would you make those back buttons bumpers? (lb, rb)
mate, you solder 4 wires wtf
That was amazing. Scuf does rip you off but I don't have the skill to make one of those. Props to you dude and anyone who can do this. NICELY DONE!
***2019*** IMPORTANT INFO for anyone who tries this in 2019 or later. They modified the way they design together some controllers such that the backplate will not go on if you put the buttons where he did in this video. You must put them somewhere in the handles where there is EMPTY SPACE or else it will not put back together. ALSO torx t7 is TOO BIG for the small screws in the circuit boards and triggers. A t6 worked for mine just be aware to have both t6 and T7 handy for either case.
This is good info!
so does this work on a xbox one s controller bouht in 2016?
Man this was amazingly done :) loved the video and loved how professional it is. Great stuff!
Glad you enjoyed. :)
This is one of the most detailed DIY videos ice seen to date. I've been thinking of doing this for a while and this video got me to bite the bullet on buying a used controller for $20! Seller days it's in like new shape, and if all goes well, I should have a scuff controller for under $30! I will report back with how things went for me once I received the controller to be hacked apart lol.
Bela Sziklassy Well how'd things go ?
Hey man just wanna say thanks for this video. I just made my own and everything works and your instructions were very helpful. I actually already have a Scuf but I had a regular controller laying around so I thought might as well try to make a DIY for fun.
For my custom wood grain "Scuf" controller, I used 1.5mm carbon fiber plates for the paddles. They feel GREAT and really look perfect with the wood grain.
Even tho this video is 3 years old I wanna leave this comment cuz this video just helped so much. Awesome stuff
Thanks!
Nice Job. Having worked on electronics since I was 12 or 13, I appreciated the heads up on several points as I'm sure many who may not have much experience should invariably find helpful.. Very helpful video. Thanks Man!!
Glad you liked it, I've also been working with electronics since a child and I've screwed up enough to learn from my mistakes and help others. :)
you forgot to add in the trigger stops, can you make a separate video for this? thanks
really thank you again . i never expected you reply so quickly.. you take viewers into consideration.. im 100% subscribing .. keep up the good work
On top of the update that you linked to in the description, it's worth mentioning that:
(1) It's easier (and less dangerous for the board) to connect to the B button at the D14 soldering point (just beneath the B contact) instead of the B contact itself.
(2) If you don't want to touch the bottom board (A board) at all, you can connect a single wire to the TP26 point (on the back of the B board) as ground.
(3) It's a better practice to connect only a single ground to the board and connect the grounds of the 2 tact buttons to one another.
I'll look into that! I plan on redoing the video once the S console and controller comes out.
to do the x and y button its the same as the a and b but different places right (btw great vid)
So is it confirmed that D14 can be used instead of soldering straight to the B button?
Also with regards to TP26, is that the point in the video where the white wire was soldered to? Then simply daisy chain all the tact switches together to remove any wire cluster?
I simplified this and just installed a button on the back of my controller for my A button after my 200$ scuff took a dump :( great video with super easy instructions. I know nothing about electronics and was able to do it first try.
Helpful tip- only make your wires as long as they need to be. Do this by measuring before you solder. Instead of hot gluing the buttons to the back plate, glue them to the back of the motherboard. This makes taking the controller apart easier.
This is amazing. I lost my job so can't afford a scuf,I have wanted one for such a long time now but unfortunately I just can't afford it after bills and shopping e.t.c.This could help so many people who don't have the money for a scuff pad. I think its a great vid. Unfortunately I tried and failed badly at doing this and now have no pad. You mke it look easy.
this was not really what I was looking for but you great I'm just going to buy one sorry for being lazy.
Dude scuffs are pricey but do same thing as this guys diy one I've got a real scuff and one of these in honestly the real feels a bit nicer but they do the same thing
I must say that was pretty amazing....question, how do I make a button for the L3 and R3 (joystick buttons)?
+Tasakajson Those are pretty easy. To the side of the joystick you can see a small tact switch. Just run a wire from where the switch connects to the board. Might take a little experimentation to see which is the right contact.
really appreciate you uploading this video ; i have a question anw : what is the exact name of the buttons you used ? + what can i use instead of these exact buttons ? i literally cant buy them because of they are not available in my country !
Thanks. The buttons are 9.5mm High Tact Switches. Any electronic parts store should have them.
Why did you solder the wires directly to the button contact points rather than the test points? Soooooo much easier to use the TPs, and no risk of your tin interfering with the button movement/contact. "A" button is TP21, "B" button is TP41.
Thanks so much I really enjoyed this and I can now save my self a ton of money
Or remove the bumpers first. Makes it alot more easy.
yeet
bro i feel you on so many levels with rage lol
you should emphasize the tinning of the wires because once i learned to do that soldering became 10 times easier but overall thanks for the help ewok
Liked both of your videos on this, you deserve it!
Thanks :)
you can also put a rubberband on the tip of the torx screwdriver and it should screw out the stripped screw :)
Any other tutorials for adding a the trigger stopper? or changing the led light in the xbox middle button?
Also for paddles I find using a fiskars flexible ruler works great, They're gripper and won't break if you bend them to far. I found them at walmart for a buck a pop.
Great vid! Just a heads up, if you take off the shoulder buttons, the triggers flip all the way up and are much easier to unscrew.
lol i didnt even do this but the fact that you said youd appreciate the like convinced me.
Great video, thx - probably the best I have seen yet. The alternative "A" button point is a huge find +++, if there was only a "B" button spot... please post if you find one. The carbon removing/soldering is the hardest part of doing this, especially for people who have not soldered before and you can easily ruin a controller, which I did on my first try. I hate the scuf paddle design as the buttons need to be slanted, on the inner side of the controller as opposed to directly on the bottom where you have to press up, instead of to the side and into your palm - which is much, much easier.
I've multi metered every point on that board to no avail. But I'm not giving up hope. :) Maybe one day I'll find that hidden "B" lead. But I'm glad you enjoyed the video. :)
***** FYI, I was having issues with my modded controller not registering inputs at time, I added the tape like you suggested and it really helped ++. Also, I use multi-directional input switches which work better imo, especially if you place the button on the angled bottom part of the controller. Thanks again.
***** there's a point right next to the b button that's another point to solder to
Wow Nice Video I hope to See more from you soon!! I Can Tell you put time into this Keep up the Great Work!
Great detailed video! I would; however, suggest not using duct tape for your wiring management as duct tape is, in fact, conductive, and has the potential to create issues on the circuit board like that.
Real industrial strength Duct Tape has aluminum and is conductive, but consumer grade Duct/Duck tape has 0 metal and is not conductive at all. While I guess I should have specified, I don't see anyone encountering this issue. I work in Low Voltage and have used Duct/Duck tape for all sorts of electrical applications throughout the years with no issue. Its not preferred or standard by any means, but sometimes you gotta make due with what you have.
For paddles i have a stand for a tablet case that the kick stand part broke off. Its a nice thin strong plastic. I tried to do this for the 360 never could get the solder to stick. Looks easier on the one actually. Ive got a spare might pull the Kit out and get to work. But yea there you go. Kick stand from a tablet case for paddles.
Hi! I am newbie to this electrical stuff haha but I just had one question. What does it mean exactly to 'solder' something and what is the purpose?
Excellent video by the way an you definitely earned a subscribe from me.
P.S: I'm trying to become more familiar with everything electrical and I thought you might have some tips? Perhaps you could tell me how you became such an expert :)
Soldering, in this case, is to fuse electronic components together. I've been playing around with this sorta stuff since I was young. I would take things apart and try to understand how they work. Nowadays you can look on sites like Instructables or even CZcams to learn the basic principles of soldering and electronic work. Get some older electronics and practice soldering before trying a big project. It takes awhile to get the hang of it, but you'll never forget once you learn. :)
great tutorial. i have a scuf one and i have taken it apart. there are some connection points for the A, X, and Y buttons that are much easier to access, A button mostly though. (won't have to remove main board) i can send you a picture if you want. just let me know by responding to this.
tom london i know this video is super old and you commented over 2 yrs ago, but if u can see this please send that pic
i fucking love you for this vid i raged and threw my scuf and i didnt want to buy another and this vid came in soo clutch thx man
Haha, glad to help. :)
+XtaCEwok i subbed and liked keep up the great work man you should do one for ps4 your channel would blow up trust me
+[141x]PSYCHO xD also i just designed my controller a half bo3 dark matter and bo2 diamond camo its soo sick
GX haha, it's funny to see i'm not the only idiot that rages so intense that destroys things...
You're the man ... tanks, this video gave me courage to try it in my brand new controller ... but i'll not install the padlles, i 'll buy largers buttons and run it with fingers ... tanks a lot
Thinking about doing this as a summer project
Excellent video, thanks for the how-to!
Have you ever used a Scuf? If so, how does this compare? Lets say you're the pickiest person on earth (me) and you tried this controller out for the first time. What, if anything, do you think someone that picky would not like about its performance? Just trying to get a better feel for what to expect. Regardless, you did an amazing job. I've subscribed, liked, favorited, and posted this video to my clans website for others to see. Thanks man!
I haven't used a Scuf One, but I own a 360 Scuf and I prefer my DIY version over it. You should be very satisfied with the result, if you feel a Real Scuf would be better this is at least a cheaper alternative that you can use while waiting to buy a real Scuf.
Oh no, i would never spend that much money on a controller their prices are absurd. If they had little experience under their belt causing them to spend a lot of time creating one single controller i would understand the price point. But the fact is they make these things left and right so they can throw one together in no time. They're just taking advantage of their consumer b/c their consumers are young, dumb, and full of cum so they're too ignorant to know any better. Scuf/Evil while two different companies have a monopoly sort of situation set up allowing them to charge w/e they want to charge b/c there's no alternative. Their consumer justifies the price assuming they're having to pay the worker by the hour to create it, they believe it takes them a long time to create, and that it is hard to create. So they're getting away with murder by charging nearly as much as a gaming console yet the product was 99.9% there so they did not have to spend the money to manufacture it...all they had to do was spend 30 minutes throwing $5 worth of cheap parts on it and bam..."here's your controller dumbass, that'll be $200". lol
Brandon Jordan You win the internet. Everyone loves to suck up to Scuf SO much without realizing what they're doing. I built my DIY 360 Scuf before Scuf was even around, I just didn't put paddles on it. I made a few and put them on eBay for $80 they sold great, then Scuf comes out and makes the EXACT same thing an wants to charge almost $200 for a new controller with two 99 cent buttons and some paddles. What kills me about Scuf is that they tried to patent modifying the back on a controller, had they engineered their own controller with Microsoft and Sony I would easily understand a patent, but to patent the idea of extra buttons on the back of a controller? Its ridiculous.
I wish more people would have adopted the Razer Sabertooth, it was a much better controller than Scuf could ever dream to produce.
Hi! XtaCEwok i like a lot you video!
I can configure the buttons or they are clones of B and A?
I'm already seeing their golds videos, keep it up!
if you get a magnet and rube the top of your scrow driver over it it makes it magnetic
Very good video :) well done
OMG this is actually helpful. going to sub your channel bcuz of this video brah
Glad to be of help! :)
I just did a bluetooth mod for my controller. I posted a tutorial effort. Anyway, this is interesting. I wonder about making four buttons and putting them more on the handles. How is the quality of the buttons you got at Radio Shack? I'd be interested in something that has quality and is responsive. Any recommendations?
So do you mby know when you are buying the scuf controller and you wanna costumize your padles, they ask you what the left padle wanna be ( A, B, Y, X ) and what the left one wanaa be ( A, B, Y, X ). Where are the looking the controller at? the bottom or the top of controller?
Does the screw get in the way of the batterys under the battery casing? and does the play and charge battery pack still fit under there? great video BTW. Good shit!
The screws I used didn't have issues with normal AA batteries. No idea about a Play and Charge kit since I don't have one. But if they do, just take a pair of wire pliers and cut the part that's sticking out. Thanks for the kind words. :)
***** thanks! will be saving me some £££ ;)
Thanks for making this video!
wow thanks so much enjoyed it alot
Hi, just liked and sub'd, awesome Tutorial! Just had a quick question, do you happen to know where I would need to solder the LED's (for lighting up abxy)? I'm not sure where the power contacts would be at. Thanks in advance!!
You could use the battery power supply, aside that you would just need to use a volt meter and find an area that outputs enough to power the LEDs. It should be pretty simple.
*****
awesome, thank you!
Really nice tutorial but you made two holes in the trigger what was those for
Trigger stops for rapid fire in call of duty
Im sorry im new to all of this but one of my son's back buttons on his scuf one controller got stuck...I watched your video and seen that replacing the button may be pretty easy but i cant find the 3/16 button anywhere...Is there a link that you can give me?? Thanks, your video was awesome by the way...
+Chris Knappins Sorry for the late reply, for some reason your comment got marked as spam. But all links are in the description.
After reading several comments and even the video description, I'm still confused as to why you drilled holes into the triggers. I didn't see that you did anything with those holes...
Look at the end of the video during the "Testing" part. You put screws those holes to act as trigger stops.
I bought the X1 pro grip and x1 paddles from scuf used this video for the mod
Thank you for this awesome tutorial. I followed your video, but now my Mic Adapter does not fit correctly. Have you run into this problem? Do you know of any solution?. I am thinking the the tact switches I used were a little bulky, I bought them off of amazon following your link in the description. Anyway, a reply would be nice, if not, have great day and happy holidays
I've heard a few people talk about this issue, but I can't seem to replicate it. Just try to make everything as flat as possible when reassembling the controller.
What I do is buy buttons that are more flat and drill in the same specific spot each time
When I click on the link for power drill it's just constant ads, doesn't show me a site to buy the drill
karl longstaff www.amazon.com/gp/product/B005LTNLDI/ref=as_li_ss_tl?ie=UTF8&camp=1789&creative=390957&creativeASIN=B005LTNLDI&linkCode=as2&tag=xtacewok-20
Awesome !! Thanks a lot!!
i would glue the forks on the back and put a female micro usb charging port on top of the battery case to charge batteries
Should of used a hairdryer that sticker would peel right up, and be able to be stuck down with no problems after
Good vid thanks bro!
I followed your instructions step by step but when i tried to use the controller it didn't work. Once i press either the A or the B button nothing happens: on the monitor you can see that the command has arrived but in reality nothing happens. What could be the problem? Has it ever happened to you?
Do you need to do the soldering, Id rather not doing all the re-wiring, and soldiering ect. Is it not possible to do it with mostly just taking a part of and putting the replacement on. ( I don't wanna rapid fire mods or anything like that, just a cosmetic thing) thanks in advance for any helpl
Cool video
Hello, I am doing my own controller and I have 30 gauge wiring. Will this be big enough gauge or should I get bigger wiring? Thanks in advance.
Do you know how to make adjustable trigger stops?
Does the glue hold the buttons very good or can it easly break? Sry for my english
Great video!
Thanks, Hope it helped. :)
What gauge wire do I need for it and what kind of buttons did you use ?
Im having trouble soldering to the a button. If it would be easier can i just get rid of the a button and solder straight to the metal piece?
I'd try to add solder...
Could you tell the size of the screws or link where to get then
Hey bro i was wondering where the button link was cuz i am actually bulding it right now and i do not see a button link please give me the link right away thank you:)
You are fucking awesome lol I wouldn't have thought to use the taco bell spoons as paddles
helpful vid. did mine but the solder on the B button kept coming off. so I tried to put it to the other pins right by the B button. but the pin ripped off when I was checking it was gonna hold. Now no B button anywhere. is there anything I can do to get it back?
same but i fixed it
Arslan Afzal tell them how
Connected the wire to the boards and I'm waiting on the buttons to come in the post but I put the controller back together and tested the trigger stops and the a button won't work is that usual because I have the wire connected to the board?
Thx man so much help
And i liked and subed
Hey when you put the buttons in did you put hot glue over the part where you connected the wire or just on the sides?
Sprae the wire
I notice this videos is a few years old, but I was wondering why you say a torx t8 and a t7 but others say the 8 and a 6?
T8 and T7 are what I have and they I've never had issue, so I assumed that's what they were. Torx bits are notoriously finicky though, so it very well could be a T6.
Ok thanks man, 😊
PLease, could you sand me another link with the news about A wiring or send me a picture, with the solder points, so ill try to run it in mine controller and tell you how it goes
I did try unsolder it but no joy :-(
Do you know a better place for the "b" button? As I used the diagram you show for the A button in the end. I have a spare pad so if I can solder somewhere that isn't on the button itself I would feel a little more confident doing it again
I can't find a spot for the B button. Just try scratching a very very small part of the pad off towards the top or bottom of the pad.
What size screws do you use for the trigger stops?
Do you have to put the paddles where you did
where and when did you use the tact switch?
so im having a small issue. first off, the controller needs to be squeezed to be turn on obvious reason most likely being the boards are non fully connected or im having an issue with the button itself. second off, when i highlight an object it seems that the "A" button and the "B" button are going off simultaneously which just makes the object i have highlighted blink alot and if i try to use the buttons itself i get no response. before i crack open my controller case any thoughts?
your awesome bro
Is it possible to do this with 4 paddles or buttons?
nice tutorial but know my b button doesn't want to work for anything with or without this modification.
do you know how to make hairpin triggers for the xone?
I have both a modded controller and a scuf controller how hard would it be to combine the 2 so I would be able to use them as one controller?
Shouldn't be too hard, just remove the mod from the modded controller and solder it to the scuf.
Tried this myself-the tactile switches work fine but the orignal buttons won't work now.i might of touched the carbon contacts with the solder iron..any ideas?
Could be several reasons. Too much carbon could be scraped off, too much solder could be on the pad, or you may have melted the carbon with the soldering iron. Try removing the solder and seeing if it works. If so, go look at the picture I linked in the description. It shows a better place to solder for the "A", "X", and "Y" buttons. Unfortunately I found that after putting out the video. :/
But best of luck, feel free to write me back if you're still having issues.
thanks for the help just rigged mine up
How would you do this for all a,b,y,X buttons
Can you still use the regular "A" and "B" buttons?
+Hayden “HAYN” Zak Yes.
Hi,
I followed your instruction and everythink works ( the normal buttons and the scuf button) but now my trigger dont work anymore .. i dont know why they won't work but its not that well... now tjey wont work with the scuf mod or without...
I have no xbox one i tried it on the pc but everytime i connect it there is an error.... is my only problem my pc (the error) or could i have done something wrong.
The controller worked perfectly fine before i opened it (there was no error when i connected it to the pc )
Make sure you did not drop a screw and it stuck to the triggered because that can cause problems and in some cases short circuit the board
Can you do this with a sloder gun?
Hi I have an original scuf and an original xbox one controller I want to scuf the original one using this videos but I have a question I feel the scuf sticks more tight than the original, do you
Know if scuf change the stick module? If yes , can I buy it somewhere?
Scuf has started using their own custom sticks on their controllers, I'm not sure if you can buy the exact kind they sell. I'd check their website, maybe contact support and explain that you only want an extra set of sticks and they might hook you up.
Yo ewok ok so am I able to screw the paddles in when I have a rechargeable battery pack? Or hpw does that work?
I am having the same problem as the guy below. I can not get my controller to close completely flush. and I can not figure out why. SHould I use thinner wires or what. I am thinking it is the ground that is keeping it from closing flush. Is there somewhere else I can ground it to. Or could I make my own ground?
There should be plenty of places to ground the wire. Just play around with it if you think it will help. I'm really stumped that so many people are having issues with this because I can't recreate the issue at all. There is a possibility that the buttons are now a bit more thick than when I purchased mine. I'll definitely play around with different types of buttons and see if I can't come up with a fix. Anymore feedback you can provide will help. :)
Controller wouldn't come together :( , had to cut the rumble pack plastic support
How come you use buttons A and B. How can we drop shot and stuff. I know there's a new model of a the ps4 since this vid came out. I'm pretty sure there's a new Xbox model as well. Could you Scuf that one plz respond.
+DeadShot 929 Most people that dropshot use the Tactical control scheme in CoD. So I made the Buttons A and B so you can Jump (A) and Melee (B) easier. And yes this can be done to ANY controller, regardless how new or old. You just add a button to the corresponding contact points on that controller. Eventually I'll do a Ps4 controller video, I just don't have a PS4 of my own to test it on.
it worked😊 thx
