  • Retired Fishing Boat - Apalachicola, Florida
Filmed in the panhandle of Florida, Roger paints an old fishing boat on location in the bright midday sun. The boat is in disrepair but has lots of character adding to its charm. Roger describes and demonstrates a technique for accurately drawing the sweeping lines of a boat using a figure eight. Sarah talks with a resident who grew up in the charming waterfront village and learns about early tourism and the fishing trade.

Old boats are always an attraction to artists. I like the play of light and shadows you brought out here, Roger.

I have really been enjoying your videos. Love how you take us through the process and introduce the culture in history of where you are. Congratulations to you and your wife for bringing such enrichment.

A couple of technical questions: Do you fix your charcoal drawing so it doesn't mix with your paints? And, are you using Open acrylics, otherwise, how do you keep them from drying out (especially in the hot Florida sun!)? Thanks!

I probably didn't fix the charcoal when I did this as I didn't carry fixative with me. It really doesn't mix with the paint enough to bother. It mostly just disappears when painting over it and probably mixes in a bit but not a problem. I don't use open acrylics. Tried them but don't like them. I use liquitex heavy body acrylics. When they dry I put out more.
