  • US senator Tom Cotton repeatedly asked TikTok's Singaporean chief, Shou Zi Chew, about his ties with China and if he had ever belonged to the Chinese Communist party during a hearing over alleged online harms to children.

I could understand the initial concern considering tiktok is more or less an international version of the Chinese douyin and thus was created by Bytedance, a Chinese organisation. So the concern of the TikTok data getting fed back to Bytedance and then being subjected to CCP orders I guess can be valid. However, as Mr Chew have made clear, TikTok is a whole entity on its own.
The fact Shou Chew admitted to have lived in Beijing for 5 years might have also made it eyebrow raising but really… Just because someone lived there for a certain number of years, does not necessarily mean that they are affiliated with the government of that country.
So for those reasons, I can somewhat see where he is coming from but where I completely lost any support for Senator Cotton was when he started harping on about unrelated topics like the Tiananmen Square massacre and various other topics like the whole dictator one. They have nothing to do with the app which is the whole reason why Mr Chew even presented to the hearing that day.
