    I had a similar experience in my 2001 Miata three years ago. It would crank but not start. Had it towed into a Mazda dealership, whose head mechanic had 40+ years of dealership experience? They said it was the immobilizer and would be $2500+ to replace with remanufactured parts from Mazda. I chose to get one out of a recycler and had it shipped to the dealership. They did the work and all seemed well for two days. About $1100 out the door with my supplied parts and their labor. Then I again noticed that when it would crank and not start, that the check engine light would not come on when ignition key was in the first on position! Turns out it was the main relay. Got a used one shipped to me for $12.00. Swappd them out in about 1 minute and it has been perfect for three years! I sued the dealership and got refunded $500 of the the labor. I also bought a brand new main replay to always have with me along with a camshaft position sensor and a crankshaft position sensor which are known to wear out and cause crank but no start situation!
    I should also mention that about five years ago I had another sudden crank but no start and had it towed to another Mazda dealership. They diagnosed the problem as a bad crankshaft position sensor. They ordered part. Installed it. Still no start. THEN they replaced the main relay and problem solved. I should have sued them too, but did not.

I was wondering, in this case why do the headlights pop up, I thought that _everything_ went through the 80 amp? By the way, I'm also trying to find my way around the engine compartment. You pull the key out wait a few seconds and power comes back and you can try again but same result. The only way you can fire up the car is with a jump. Any idea why it doesn’t like the juice just from the car battery. I didn’t use to have this issue. BTW the main 80A is hard wired how I got the car. Thanks

    Would putting the positive terminal on battery first cause this? Negative terminal sparked when i put it on and popped fuse (if thats what i think caused it)
    What do you think?

    • @MiataMan
      @MiataMan  Před 2 měsíci

      It shouldn’t make a difference which one you put on first.
      The consensus is to always connect the negative last.
      However, it’s safer and easier to connect the negative first on NA Miatas.
      If there is power flowing, you will usually see a quick spark when re-connecting battery terminals. Happens on the positive or negative terminal.
      You may have an issue somewhere else in the system.

I turns one once it's jumped with jumper cables, but dies completely the next day (no clicking sound, nothing on dashboard...completely dead) If we inspect the large amp in the fuse box in the hood, and see if there's a blown large fuse, do you think it'll fix our problem? Please help, thank you so much!

    • @MiataMan
      @MiataMan  Před 2 lety

      A parasitic draw can come from many places. It’s usually a faulty component that’s not turning off after the key has. Even removed.
      Try pulling out the radio fuse and see if the problem is resolved.
      Faulty radios are often the cause of this sort of drain.

Next steps for me are to check fuel pressure and ignition spark. But, I noticed there is an Anti Theft module installed. There is NO model number and no product info. It looks almost like factory installed becuase of the wire harnesess. I am not sure if this module is de-activating the car from starting. Does anyone know anything these anti theft modules?

    • @MiataMan
      @MiataMan  Před 2 lety

      Thanks for reaching out.
      It could be the anti theft system. Is there an in-line fuse in the wire harness going to the module?
      If so, pull the fuse and see if it starts.
      It could also be your main relay. It’s in the fuse box under the hood and is labeled “fuel inj”

    I got a miata with a dead battery doing the same thing. I was given jumper cables with her and I suspect that she's been jumped. I hear AGM batteries can't be jumped the normal way so whatever life the battery had was probably cut shorter. Just gotta go get another one

    • @MiataMan
      @MiataMan  Před 2 lety +1

      The small AGM batteries that are used in Miatas don’t last. They have a tendency to develop bad cells and die prematurely if not maintained. A conventional lead acid battery has more cold cranking amps, lasts longer and is cheaper.
      The group size of the battery is 51RPS.
      Note:
      It’s always a good idea to check your battery periodically for leakage.
