The things she does with a flat brush! I am almost as afraid of a flat brush as I am of painting a rose. LOL These are amazing, ladies!
An artist's style is what naturally happens as one keeps painting.
2 of my favorites.... talking about the dreaded roses!!! 😂😂😂😂 The first time I ever heard Jillian put to words how I felt about these damn flowers, I was like, "I found my Guru!!!!!" They are always the same and I feel like a fraud regarding the dang rose. I don't understand it and I feel like I can't "see" it. Jillian makes my heart beat fast and slow at the same time. Having 2 of my artists on one screen, talking about roses just lights a fire. Thank you for doing this!!!!!! Jillian, see you soon on Brush Movement!
I felt exactly the same way painting with Jillian and about the blasted ROSE!! But now I feel very different!
right, me too, I couldnt SEE it! exactly. How can I paint what I couldnt see?
I'm with both of you - the "classic rose" is neither beginner friendly nor does it really look like a real rose. Not to mention that it's always shows the flower from the top... just like you also mentioned. I have been also playing with the "bracket's" directions to form actual petals and like it more that the C-curves in the classic rose. And I definitely prefer to use a softer flat brush to paint roses. The petals just form better and seem kind of more realistic. But this video also blew my mind because of how the colors are used and the different shapes and directions of how to paint the flower. Just absolutely love it! Jillian yet again showed the importance of observation, analysis and not being afraid to create your thing to grow and become better in art. All the while enjoying ourselves and using all the beautiful colors our palettes have to offer.

Thx to Jillian for reinventing watercolour roses! Brackets!! I always felt there is so much missing from the "standard round n round" painted roses, like there is so much more! There are buds! There are leaves, lots of them! And flowers, all in so many directions. I mean, I GROW roses! And I photograph them! And I paint them! Excited to jump over to her channel and try her method! ❤

Hello Kristy and Jillian... can I just say THANK YOU. I love art, I love the freedom of watercolor, but you really have opened my eyes to what is needed to get my art to the next stage. So often, we want to be perfect, or like someone else, and that is not what art is all about. It is truly about finding your own voice and knowing when something is not resonating. Love you both!!!

Patty-I have not been a fan of the C strokes. I couldn't see the details I needed for my brain to say, "That's a rose" Now that I'm seeing Jillian's explanation, it makes more sense to me. Thank you, Julian.

I love the idea of painting roses…but in a fun whimsical not QUITE photo realistic way. This was so fresh and fun…while I’m new to painting I’m excited to try this out!

I love painting ranunculus and anemone and hated painting roses (and peonies - argh). Now I realize the dark, filled-in, complementary color of the center of my anemone and ranunculus (ranunculi? 😆) and the tighter c-curve is what I loved. Thank you & Jillian for translating the process for me in a way that now makes me keen to try a rose again. Dark splotchy boxy center and pulling it out with water for the petals. Then "backwards" c-curves to define the petals - woo hoo!

So weird. This is exactly what happened to me. I was determined not to be beat by roses that I just could not master. Exactly like Ms. Boon, I started from the outside and found that so much easier and a game changer, but exactly like Kristy, I started with the small, quick stroke exercise. It just did not work for me. I did not take a break from art though, nor think that I was a failure because I can paint and at least a few things incredibly well. So I actually did not doubt myself.
Thank you for this powerful and super important video that reaffirms my rose painting journey ❤❤❤. You are both incredible artists and I am glad you did not quit completely Ms. Boon.
❤ it took me 4 years to figure it out and now with this video it's almost like a short cut for many beginners but yet I hope that the message goes beyond getting the rose but also figuring out what kind of rose of how you want your rose to turn out - a process of becoming rather than just being❤ ❤❤❤ keep growing and I hope that you too figure roses out!

Thank you so much for this video! I had so many Heureka Moments, was stunned, amazed and laughing as well! This is also why I didn’t paint roses before today! 😅
One thing I would love to share for inspiration: if you find old books from the 60s/70s where roses are decorative elements on photos - this was the time where the roses looked edgy, hard angles, triangular shaped paddles. By far not romantic as we have it now. 😉 Roses have stings and a strong „character“. 😂🎉
Don’t worry if „copying“ - we learn a technique and will make it our own. ❤ Happy painting ❤

Ok this video hit home for me big time!! The timing of seeing this video was beyond perfect! I too have become so frustrated with learning to paint roses to the point where yesterday I almost just threw in the "towel" for feeling like I'm not making any improvement. So many "ah ha" moments for me with you both! A big one being the questioning all the white space in the center "brackets"!!! It just never felt right to me.
