What impressed me after this comparison is the fact that you must live in a community that does not fine you for allowing the grass to grow to this height. You must be fortunate not to live under the iron fist of out of control and power-hungry HOA. Great real world independent test!

Great breakdown. I just bought the green works from my local tractor supply and I love it. We had grass from 14-28 inches high (lots of land and the tractor broke). It took alittle time, but I got around 1/4 acre down to 4" with it. I will say my biggest complaint would be the choke delay. I cleared it out a few times and it still fought me to restart. Otherwise it was amazing. And being the cheapest option demo'd, I'm glad to see it holds its own here as well as it does.

I bought property with yard and pasture that was neglected for over a decade, and the same Ego mower. Wow did it impress! Grass has been growing all year, and I mowed it down along with thorny wild roses, small tree saplings, etc. Don't really recommend that as there's some obvious wear and tear under the deck and the blades look terrible, but it got the needful done. I had to mow literally several acres of grass cutting a driveway into the place along with enough room to move a large RV in. Initially I used the mulching blade that came attached, but then switched to the efficiency blade with side eject. That clogged up a lot, but switching to the high lift blade with the side eject worked best. I probably ought to have bagged it but would have been having to empty the bag every couple minutes with as thick and tall as the grass was. I've been very happy with all the Ego tools and can't wait to eventually get a zero turn riding mower...

I've tortured my greenworks pro 21" 60v a few times. My back yard is all natural, like a field. When we get heavy rains, the grass and weeds can quickly get up to 4-5 feet tall (several different wild grasses, wild lettuce, and dandelions).
My Greenworks will chew through it no problems as long as I go slow by lifting the front of the mower and slowly bringing it down. If I go too fast, it will stall. My neighbor has a gas powered Honda and his stalls just as easily when the grass gets super tall.
It also helps to flip it over and sharpen the blades real quick before each use with my milwaukee rotary tool. Only takes about 5 minutes to do both edges. A 4AH battery also only lasts about 800 square feet when the grass is this tall, so it takes multiple charges and battery swaps.
The last time I had to do this was a year ago when we had rain every day for 20 days. Had to wait until it stopped raining and the ground dried up. Usually it gets mow once a month.

I mowed my yard with the grass just as high with my Ego Z6. It went through it like butter. It was side discharged because I don't have the mulching plug but man it did great. Realistically, if this were my lawn, I’d do several passes with the bag, each time lowering the deck by one. Perhaps start with 7, then 6, then 5-the lawn should look significantly better kept after the third run. Still love my EGO with 10AH battery. I do notice, however, that the higher the deck with the EGO, the less up draft. For my Tall Fescue yard, I keep it at #5. Would love to go #7, but there’s much less suction, and the yard doesn’t look smooth after the cut. So #5 it is, which still looks great. All in all, for this convenience, I’m sold on the battery over the gas.

Anyone asking me about it I recommend the ego models all the time. I will say the Ego or any Battery run mower is more of an investment. I looked at it like how long will it take me to make my money back by NOT buying gas for a gas mower and at that point is when I looked at it like NOW I am saving money not to mention the environment In my book it's EGO FTW.

My Ego 18" chainsaw broke so while I was waiting for it to get replaced I bought a corded electric Oregon 18" chainsaw which uses the same chain size. The cord is definitely a pain - batteries are pricey but the convenience is unbeatable! For some jobs I used the Ego Nexus to power the corded chainsaw, but unfortunately the 2000W limit of the Nexus proved limiting and I had to go easy or frequently reset the Nexus. Pretty amazing that the battery chainsaw can do the same work as the corded without the headaches. Hoping that Ego comes out with a 3000W inverter in the future though.
Best news? Ego sent a brand new chainsaw to replace the one that stopped working. Awesome warranty support!

I have only ever mulched I've been mulching before it was cool since 1980s I had the 2 cycle lawnboy self propelled and I saved my mowing money to buy the special mulch plug. Back then the lawnboy either baged or side discharge I remember that special order plug cost me $30 in 1980 money today that's $106.00 LOL

Great video. A few years back I was looking at electric mowers and the Ego was getting rave reviews pretty much everywhere. But for me, I just can't get past that it looks like a spaceship or like it might transform into a robot or something. Plus, I prefer having a steel deck. I'm sure the Ego is plenty tough, but I just prefer steel... and also the 'traditional' mower look.
I ended up going with the Snapper 82v, which had good reviews and was one of the most powerful at the time (I think still ranks near the top). Got the 2 battery package, so by the time 1 dies, the other would be fully charged. Very satisfied. If I were looking today, I would probably lean toward the Milwaukee... but that price - ouch! To be honest, I'd probably go with Snapper again and save $500. But there are lot of solid choices out there these days - more than back when I was looking. That's why I enjoy watching videos like this. Good job.

Ego does two steel deck versions and they both look like your traditional mowers. But everyone has their own likes and dislikes. Just do yourself a favour and do lot's of research if you are planning on going with a different brand than what you already have.

First let me start by saying great comparison video test, well done and well executed. I’m not in the market for a battery mower I have a large yard that I mow with 2 kubota diesel tractors ( my adult son uses one when he’s off and can help ), if I was in the market for a battery mower I think I would choose the Milwaukee. I like the fact the Milwaukee batteries would also fit my other Milwaukee power tools as well. that’s a big selling point fo me because I don’t have to invest in other batteries for different tools, kind of one size fits all. Once again great video thanks for the time and effort it takes to put it all together.

I just used my new Greenworks today on grass at least that tall. I didn't use turbo maybe should have and it did choke twice. I had a little Neuton for years that just died and since it choked all the time I didn't think anything of it, just cleared the grass out of the bottom and kept going. It also comes with a high lift blade which I'm sure I'll never use but might have done this job easier. I don't intend to let the grass get this high again of course but I was impressed it would cut it. All these mowers are great, I just got the best deal on the Greenworks and the batteries aren't outrageously priced. Great comparison!

I just got the Ego 2156 with the 10ah battery and have been pleased so far. Being peak growing season my grass is as lush as it will be all season and have never had the mower choke out. I occasionally see a Mohawk stripe, not sure why. Also saw it with my gas mower so maybe something with rotary mowers. Still using the mulch blade so I might try the lift blade and see how that does. I bag a lot and love that the Ego throws the grass to the back of the bag. My gas mower would always clog at the front of the bag which I had to empty with only half a bag of grass.

There is no set standard to determine exactly what the blade height will be for each adjustment setting on every model. Variations such as the wheel size, blade size, engine crankshaft design and adjustment components must be considered when determining the cutting height settings. Although I am of the opinion that the Ego mower is the better of the three, I am not sure the Greenworks got a fair shake. It's cut swaths were visibly yellower which is indicative of a lower cut, which might explain why many of the commenters reported a different experience.

Really would like a tall grass side discharge comparison. This week in NY the grass grew like crazy from cool Temps and rain. My ego just does not work well with its rear discharge chute. Clogs every 10 ft. Doesn't shut off by clogs up and it's a mess of grass and missed clippings. The toro timemaster with an actual side discharge handles it no problem. If the engineers would have opened the rear discharge chute wider and aimed it to the left to avoid the sudden change in direction the grass encounters coming out going to the right, it'd be a pretty damn near perfect mower.

    • @robertthompson3447

Never been happy with my EGO side discharge. It is a cute design for small loads. I used my Milwaukee side discharge for the first time today and was very pleased with it. I have modified my blade for better vortex, but only as much at the EGO's high lift blade would provide. I like that the Milwaukee side discharge doesn't try to redirect the cuttings. It just shields the user from the flow of the cuttings.

Nice review Tech! Thanks for doing the normal height mulch test. That Milwaukee is a beast! And the ability to use those 18v batteries in all the other Milwaukee 18v tools is nicer than those huge EGO or Greenworks Pro batteries. But at $1100, IMO it's way over priced. But a lot of people are buying them. I bought the 36v Makita with the same battery advantage as the Milwaukee. And at a savings of $471, I'm happier with the cash parked in my pocket than the most powerful battery mower bragging rights parked in my garden shed. At over 100 lbs, the Makita leaves a very level cut. Thanks Tech!!

Like, maybe you're going on vacation or something and need to mow early and there's dew on the ground. Wet grass kills electric mowers. Or, how the battery does in 90-100 degree weather. Man the heat will suck a battery dry. And can actually damage them. I've had an ego for about 4 years and I've learned. Absolute no goes are wet grass or high heat. But I can't stop the high heat where I live.
