In a major breakthrough in the Gangadhar Chadchan case, CID sleuths have arrested prime accused Mahadev Sahukar Bairagonda from Vijayapura. KSR Charan Reddy, ADGP CID, said, “Mahadeva Sahukar Bhairagonda (in picture) was arrested on Thursday morning and was produced in the Indi court, which remanded him to police custody for seven days.”
He maintained that soon after the CID took over the investigation, Bairagonda’s house had been under constant watch. Ten days ago, his house was searched and significant recoveries were made, including ammunition for his rifled weapons. The team also recovered about 50 rifle rounds for which there was no ready explanation and the investigating officer had registered a complaint at the Chadchan police station. “The investigation is still open. We are just two-three weeks into the investigation. Anything is possible depending on how we get evidence,” said Reddy.
On October 30, 2017, Dharmaraj Chadchan (32) was killed in an encounter. Since then Gangadhar Chadchan had been missing and a missing complaint was filed. It may be recalled Vimalabai, mother of the Chadchan brothers, had launched a legal battle after she suspected that Gangadhar was killed by the rival gang with the support of police.
A team lead by CID SP Anand Kumar, including two DySps and seven inspectors have been working on the case with the help of the Vijayapura district police. The case was handed over to the CID after the arrest of PSI Gopal Hallur and three other constables, Siddarooda Roogi, Chandrashekar Jadhav and Geddappa Naikodi, in connection with Gangadhar Chadchan’s murder, amid suspicion that more senior officials could be involved in the case. The arrested are accused of taking ‘supari’ for the murders. They are accused of picking up the brothers Dharmaraj and Gangadhar from their village, staging an encounter and then handing over Gangadhar to Bhairagonda. They allegedly helped in disposing the body in Bhima river.
For decades, clash among Bhairagonda Sahukar and the Chadchan families has polluted the banks of river Bhima with murders. Mahadev Sahukar has grown as an important personality in the area and was even keen on contesting the polls. He is the President of Rastriya Jana Shakti Vedike and founder of Shree Bhairavanath Institute (Kerur). Locals claim that he has been providing free education to the poor. He shared close ties with prominent and top Congress leaders. Just before the Assembly elections, he was arrested in an illegal mining case and he was charged of Attempt to Murder in the year 2004. He has been a rowdy sheeter at the Chadchan police station of Vijayapur.
