    Love your vids! .338 Win Mag is a truly excellent hunting caliber. It’s a very well balanced cartridge that is both powerful and manageable even without a suppressor or muzzle brake. It is a very easy cartridge to handload and works very well with a wide variety of powders and bullets. I personally like the 210 and 225 partitions. You won’t have to give as many beans for the ammo you load yourself. I can’t imagine paying those prices for .338 Win Mag ammo these ammo companies need to quit raising prices so much. Go thump you some hogs with that gun, it’s great fun!

      I used to have a .338 Win. mag. and I did load my own ammo. It is a great rifle and the two elk I shot with it went down on the spot. I did however trade it off because I could get the same results with my 35 Whelen and a 225 grain bullet and use 20 grains less powder, that's enough powder to also load a .223 round.

    My dad had a rifle customized in 338 win mag before I was born. I have it now and some old ammo boxes. Some of those boxes I bought 20 years ago. I thought it was rough back then paying around $35 for a box of 20. Now I'm glad that I got into reloading.

    • @jam5287
      @jam5287 Před 6 měsíci

      Exactly.. if you can even find it on the shelf now it’s at least $80 for a box. Not as bad as the large nosler calibers or the Remington ultra magnums. But still a hefty price

    I lived in Alaska for 40 years and hunted with a Ruger Mdl 77 .338WM for 25+ years (or a .30-06 depending on target spieces). I handloaded my ammo for all of my cartridge choices, the .338 and '06 were the easiest in that respect given the variety of powder and projectile choices available, all of my rifles had from the factory barrels and triggers, primarily Ruger and Mauser (CZ). With patience and attention to detail, as everyone should practice when handloading, gave me excellent results. I was able to get consistent sub-MOA groups and on the good days, sub- 3/4" groups even with a Leupold VX-5 1-5x24 HVY DPX scope, no recoil compensation and from a sand bag rest. Fortunately for my pocket book my .338 will shoot the Hornady Interlock 225gn to the same POI as the Nosler Partition 225gn bullet with the same powder charge of Reloader 22, both bullets performed excellently on moose and caribou. The .338WM is a very impressive cartridge.

    I realize your video is tailored to (mostly) non-reloaders, but there are usually some hidden gems (tips, thoughts, etc.) included. I particularly enjoyed seeing the supressor in action. One of the several benefits for doing so is cost savings. The main for me is the accuracy a hand loader can develop, matching all components to create a round that is capable of printing 1/2" to 3/4" groups at 200 yards.

    My Savage Hog hunter 338WM used to shoot groups that looked like the Federal ammo groups you shot. All brands were about the same, i tried 3 or 4 brands and some reloads. I took mine to a gunsmith and was told it was the synthetic stock flexing under recoil- some $$ later and i now have a Boyds laminate and bedding and it shoots 1in or better if i do my part- it still prefers flat based bullets over boattails for some reason.

      That's because your ammo is trucked to the port. Then shipped by barge or cargo ship to Hawaii. We have a similar problem here in Alaska, our ammo has to come by barge and then be trucked all over the state. Some kind of problem ground shipping it through Canada.

      Looked good, square, trigger squeeze, couldn't tell on breathing, still was hitting you pretty hard even with the can. You're rifle rest was moving pretty good and the barrel was jumping pretty good. Might sandbag your rest, I know the LR instructor's teach it, sometimes you just got to hold that gun down till the bullet leaves the barrel. I'm just throwing ideas outthere. People, reload if you're not already. Lee has a reloader that fits in your hands for around hundred. Any reloader is better than no reloader, you will need it in the future. Follow instructions, double check everything.
      Good video, glad you're shooting that cannon and not me lol.

    The vertical stringing is a sign of a barrel harmonics issue. No doubt stock rubbing on the barrel is effecting group size. If it were mine, I'd replace the stock with a McMillan or something similar....something that has bedding blocks.

    I would cautiously exam all the stock points along the barrell channel to make sure it is trul free floated. I don't know what bedding material is used now, but maybe cast the action into the recoil lung with some minor fitting. The rifle is showing you it will shoot due to the accuracy of the Remington and Orx ammo. Regarding those two: your rifle throat may like less than full diamater bullets traveling through for any maximum period of time. Skinner pointed bullets leading the way through the throat set up the right harmonics, and not create additional pressure at the tip of the chamber. Using these two characteristic on that particular rifle, would be all I'd do; I bet it becomes a near tack drivier.

    I wonder if your barrel is getting fouled. I had a Remington 270 WSM that would shoot pretty decent (1.25" groups at 100) with my hand loads. After about 15 shots the groups would really start going to crap. Like 4-6" groups. Somebody suggested running a bore snake through it every 10 shots, and like magic the accuracy returned. I eventually had that gun rebarreled by Pac-nor and now it's a bad day if my groups aren't in the .2s or .3s. I also think the harder recoiling guns will exploit any weakness in your rifle, your shooting form, or your mental focus. But it sure is sweet when you get a nice tight group with a big bore!

    I noticed something that could be making a small difference in your accuracy. When you start out, your sled is way up front on the table. By your third shot it’s back 6” from where you started. Once or twice you moved it forward on the table on the third shot and got better accuracy. You’re changing your eye relief and shouldering the rifle lower on the third shot. Rewind the video and you’ll see what I’m talking about

      Does ruger use a recoil lug like a remington? My remington 700 is off center in the stock due to the recoil lug being off center. Needs barrel loosened and lug recentered in the synthetic stock….

    If it helps put food on the table, then it's a damn fine rifle in my eyes.
