      Late reply, but I've gotta say it-
      If any civilization sought to communicate unambiguously with another over interstellar distances it seems obvious to me that they would do it by laser. Even relatively near a star the fixed and isolated wavelength would stand out. It has always seemed to me that SETI was barking up the wrong tree since no society that has survived the technological transition would throw away as much energy as is wasted in a radio signal.
      After a handshake and working out details we can (carefully) point Fermi's neutrino gun at a receptor on their end. Now that could really work.
      OK. That's all. Just had to say it.

      very good point. "They" only tell you what THEY want you to hear. I knew about it because a very good (& smart) friend of mine was visiting London on vacation at the time and he heard about it. Yeah he wasted no time renting a vehicle and driving down there for a firsthand looksee. At this time he had NO idea that it was a "message" he was simply interested in the crop "circle" phenomena. So he actually got down on his hands in knees and examined the actual bends in the plants themselves. He stated later NO WAY was this man made! The plants were actually bent by varying degrees of damage to the stems at varying heights. The stems later healed and they continued to grow but at their new "bent" configuration. they were not CRUSHED as would have been the case had a human done it by any other means. He said the bend lines were also very precise... almost as if the plants were a cut line. There was another pictogram there in the same field but it was NOT present to his knowledge when he visited it on 8.18.2001. In fact it appeared exactly one year to the day later. Thus although these are often seen together in fact they were present a year apart thus they were obviously both not present concurrently.

    Correct, the 2001 crop circle (known as 'Arecibo Reply') was confirmed to be genuine by researchers and not a hoax. All crop circles can be analized to determine authenticity by analyizing the way the plant stems are "layed over" with an expulsion cavity and by other characteristics. Man-made crop circles do not have these atributes and are easy to identify as hoaxes.

      Seems as though our video posting friend here thinks the answering message was created by a group of "artists". That doesn't explain the fact that the grain stalks in the crop "circle" were altered so that they bent, but didn't break. Or the fact that ordinary, non scientist "artists" would not normally have the scientific know-how to create such a response as the reply message contained. SMH...

    I may never "know" if there is other life out there in the galaxy, or even in the universe but I choose to "believe" that there is, as it feels like an unbearable heartbreak to think that we are all there is, and will ever be. Nevertheless, the realist in me tends to think that life is like momentary flashes of light going off across the cosmos. There one moment, and gone the next, forever causally separated by the unimaginable vastness of time and space. Thankfully, we have imagination enough to visit the far off places in our minds, that we could never hope to visit otherwise.

    The irony. The Arecibo message was designed and intended to communicate with extraterrestrial life. We get a reply and immediately write it off as "can't be aliens". At what point do we reconcile this fractured thinking? We are not alone, and we never have been.

      aliens receive a sophisticated binary-coded message with info about the species and their surroundings:
      - what do we do, sir?
      - what we always do... circles!
      - ...coding our genome?
      - no, just... circles.
      - shouldn't we reply using binar...

    I was particularly disappointed by the mere 10 seconds dedicated to the “reply” inscribed in the crop circle formation of 2001 at Chilbolton UK . . . the rationale simply being because Earth scientists barely got to decipher the quantized message yet “ someone “ did in a crop circle inscribed overnight measuring a staggering 75 feet wide by 120 feet long , that alone is an impossible feat even with our current technology . . . but what is mind blowing is that the message had scientific rationale, so the author had to have a clear understanding of what the original message was all about , hence deserving more scrutiny and thorough evaluation all its own . . . The Arecibo message “reply” is listed in Wikipedia as a hoax . . . anyone could call it a hoax . . . I unequivocally would not . . .

    The message they sent reminds me of that math I used to do when I was a kid; randomly multiplying, dividing, adding and subtracting, and then getting some random number and pretending it was significant. Aliens are gonna get that message and be like oh cool, big light beam, hope that wasn't anything bad.

  • @SquirrelASMR

  • @range4u55
    @range4u55 Před 11 měsíci +1

    Great explanation. This is what I do not understand. This message was sent to the world’s BEST scientist to decide the Aricebo message. Yet, most couldn’t crack it in full. Then, a response 30 years later in the same binary code was made on a crop circle. So easily dismissed? What an elaborate hoax to give the exact measurements of another being, planets, and dna structure. Using the exact binary code.
    Not only would you need to know binary code in this form, but construct all this information onto a crop circle. I could be speculating here, but why is it so improbable someone tried to send us a message back that we sent out?
    WAS NOT THAT THE POINT?

    I have for long been perplexed why they wanted to introduce this base-10 number system in the beginning of the message. It seems to add unnecessary complication for the code breaker. They could have used octal (base-8) coding which is much more natural number system when using binary code.

      @LaunchPadAstronomy  Před 2 lety

      Thank you very kindly. As for base 10, etc., I'd like to hope that's not going to be a problem for an intelligent civilization. We use different bases ourselves, and binary is a base 2 format. So hopefully they'll understand binary :)

    @TobyOnTube Před rokem

    Excellent video! At 10:28 its a bit unclear. Better would be to emphasize that 14 is to be multiplied with the transmission frequency. The logic? The blue vertical column should trigger the alien brain to think in terms of length. Since 14 is unit less, we need units. From where? The only answer is from the message frequency. The last part should have been rephrased to "or whatever units the aliens chose to for the wavelength of the transmission frequency".
