  • So in today's video I wanted to talk about how the Pioneer Toraiz Squid has now become my main Ableton midi controller and how I ditched the Ableton Push for it. The Squid is a feature packed midi sequencer with a whole load of creative functions that make it great for coming up with ideas.

    I had the Toraiz for two weeks now, and everyday i discover and learn new features that this machine is capable of which makes me love it more and more. its my first sequencer i don't have any experience with other sequencer but i feel i made the right investment along side with the Toraiz AS-1. haven't felt that for long time lol

    Just got one, combined with an iPad this is one powerful portable setup.
    Love the sp16 but got a bit frustrated with the limits of the sequencer, it’s fun & fast sounds great, Dave smith filters(keeping it)
    But if you want weird & wild rhythms the squid is out here.

    Been using maschine plus the same way. Just send midi, i choose channel 1, arpeggiator, scales, chords, midi cc, etc...it´s awesome. Using it with reason too. Ableton link on, sample what you have made, slice, make different patterns and away we go 😀 maschine is in standalone, and then the usb midi from M+ is available.

    I got mine the week it came out and its mostly been gathering dust. Only a few mins into your video I was reminded why I dont use it. Its just a pain to setup each time. Most of my other devices or sequencers I can dive into and use relatively quickly. With Squid it opens every time on the previous project, which is rarely what I want to open, so I start a new project and have to go through the process of assigning each midi track. Something as simple as a custom default layout, or saving templates would make a huge difference.

    • @DirtySecretz
      @DirtySecretz  Před 4 lety +5

      Well my default project on the Squid is setup with all 16 pads mapped to the USB midi channels then you can easily set them with your default Ableton project so could be setup to work quite quickly but i get ya, definitely some improvements could be made!

    Just started using Interpolation on the Squid and found that feature really nice along with the randomization set to Euclid Based / Melodic! But I've been having a lot of trouble getting it to synch up with Live on the grid... Do you know of any really detailed tutorials or anything on getting hardware synched? I might just buy an E-RM Multiclock when it becomes available and hope that does it for a hefty price

    • @dubmaverick69
      @dubmaverick69 Před 7 měsíci

      There is no need for E-RM clock, it is basically snake oil, all you need to do is to measure you delay time and input that the difference as he shows in Live, Bitwig is much much easier and tightest, never was fan of Live, Bitwig is the way forward and for all mixing and recording Cubase.

    Hey man I just subscribed. I've been binge watching every video I can find about this controller. So glad to see another one pop up in my search. I love the fact you are controlling exclusively Ableton which is the way I intend to use it if I do end up purchasing the Squid. I'm wondering though how you think this controller would work out in Abletons session view for use in a live performance. Have you given this any thought? Looking forward to your next live stream!

    • @DirtySecretz
      @DirtySecretz  Před 4 lety +1

      I don't think it really matters whether it's session or arrangement view because in this way all the sequencing is being done by the Squid, not by Ableton. Ableton is acting more like a host of instruments rather than a DAW in this setup but session view could give you a better idea of what is happening though - certainly works better in a live situation.

    • @Shane-zo4mg
      @Shane-zo4mg Před 4 lety

      @@DirtySecretz Well I know it will still trigger everything the same, but in terms of mapping the squid. Can you trigger clips with the pads and make a 4x4 red box to work with this thing?

    • @DirtySecretz
      @DirtySecretz  Před 4 lety +2

      I’m really not sure, can’t say I’ve tried that as I don’t use Live for performing with. I’d imagine it’s maybe possible but I think if you were specifically after something like that the Push or even launchpad would be a better, more logical move. The Squid is definitely more about specifically about controlling instruments (hardware or software).

    • @Shane-zo4mg
      @Shane-zo4mg Před 4 lety

    squid receive program change from ableton? it'a possible change a pattern?

  • @thestever
    @thestever Před 2 lety

    Is there a way to make this work with an Ableton drum rack? I prefer to have all my drums in 1 rack as opposed to having them on different channels.

    • @DirtySecretz
      @DirtySecretz  Před 2 lety

      You can certainly do this but you wouldn't be easily be able to step sequence it on the Squid. Each track on the Squid is meant to sequence an instrument so each step would be a certain note (C3, D3, etc). You can program chords on a single step but thinking about that instrument being a drum rack you'd need to play the notes that correspond to the kick and clap for example. In scale mode you could definitely perform the drums in real time but editing the steps afterwards would be tricky. A way to get around it would be to set each drum cell you're using in a drum rack to be a different midi channel so you could track is each sound via the Squid. It's complicated but if you try it you'll see it's not quite that simple. The Squid isn't really built for Ableton, the Push is definitely more integrated for doing things like this.

  • @substance90
    @substance90 Před 4 lety +2

    Thanks for showing your workflow with the Squid. I've been using mine in a very similar fashion with Bitwig Studio but when the Squid is set to slave the clock keeps fluctuating by 0.1 BPM (jumping between 129.9 and 130 BPM). That makes it currently very unreliable for recording so I just record my patterns in the Squid and export the MIDI files to Bitwig clips when I'm ready.

    • @DirtySecretz
      @DirtySecretz  Před 4 lety +3

      That definitely makes sense! It isn't totally exact and I guess that's just standard midi for you - maybe Midi 2.0 might help in the future but I kinda like it not being perfect. I think that's the reason I like using external gear sometimes because it introduces fluctuations but exporting the midi is definitely the best way to go if you want to be exact 👍🏻

    • @thegoony
      @thegoony Před 4 lety +4

      The fluctuation is perfectly normal, all hardware does this, just a lot don't show it on their screens

    • @Arminhio2
      @Arminhio2 Před 3 lety

      Does the Squid work as normal, when set as Midi Slave? Some other controllers show problems with usability, when synced to an external clock, e. g. lacking some functions of the pad matrix. Maschine MK2 drove me crazy with those issues. Thx
