    Clever differential engineering - similar to the Peugeot; Hypoide system found in the 504 and 404.
    Can also be likened to the Pinzgauer transmission and final drive.
    Old technology but very effective. Fuel consumption may be heavier.

      Hmm, nope. I'm no Tatra expert, but I'm pretty sure Porsche just got "inspired" by the Tatra system, invented by Hans Ledwinka.

    • @Sjanzo
      @Sjanzo Před 7 lety +9

      You have it the other way around: Porsche broke 20 patents of Hans Ledwinka (Tatra company) and this was solved by the invasion of Czechoslovakia by Hitler. ?In 1961 a reparation had to be payd by VW to the Ringhoffer family (former Tatra company owners)of 3 million Mark. This was the reason that it took VW to rely on the Beetle for so long, untill the VW Golf was introduced. They ran out of money. Hans Ledwinka designed the backbone chassis in 1924, and Erich Ledwinka, his son designed the Pinzgauer and Haflinger whilst working for Steyr in Austria. In fact, Porsche wasnt as succesful as many people think, he used others ideas as most of his own ideas failed because he was too eager to please Hitlers megalomane ideas...

      Hello Clover Leaf, yes you are partly right and I am partly wrong, it war Ignatius Shustalla who actually designed the system and Hans Ledwinka and Ferdinand Porsche worked for / with him, Porsche defected to the Nazis when they invaded CZ and he stole the design of the Tatra T570 - the peoples car, later to become the VW Bettle, Ledwinka stayed and eventually took over from Shustalla, Shushtalla's house is preserved for history in Koprivnice.

    First class design transmission, with great rigidity and the three lockable differentials and all independent suspension! However, I see no differentials between axles; so for road use I guess front axle is disconnected? Also, as others have said, doesn't the offset left and right side roadwheels affect handling? Manufacturing costs must by twice as much as most simple Western world road vehicles! But I guess it's worth it for the great offroad advantage.

      @petrbg9248 Před 7 lety +2

      Yes leaf springs had earlier Tatra models. This chassis concept has been produced since 1920. Ford and GM would have to buy from the Tatra patent.

    • @mattg8116
      @mattg8116 Před 5 lety

      HowkeyLL you seem to be answering a lot of questions here, I have some more for you. Are there any applications you know of that tilt the angle of the the halfshaft forward and back per side so that the wheel centerlines are realigned? seems like this would be doable with the proper ring/and pinion bevel. Also do you know of any applications which mount the ring gears higher relative to the pinions to bias rebound travel? like a ford highpinion to allow greater travel in one direction before ring gear interference? (of course the point of rotation would remain the same). Also it seems to me that a key disadvantage to this design is the torque reaction from the driveline to the suspension. it will surely induce body roll under acceleration, at least as much if not more than a solid axle type. Is there any dynamic ways this is naturally mitigated aside from stiff suspension? It seems this torque reaction takes away a few elements that would otherwise make this suspension truly independent since both wheels and their respective travel are tied together through the differential torque. for example, a one wheel obstacle is going to induce a torque reaction through both wheels and both swing axles as well as the driveline itself. its small sure, but not zero, and not truly independent. Overall I am looking for a more indepth understanding of the vehicle dynamics of this set up, let me know if you have any useful resources on the subject.

      +Allan McDigger Thanks...Could you explain? Difficult without a picture I know.... how does the crown wheel maintain perfect mesh with the bevel wheel on the half shaft as the half shaft goes up and down with suspension?

    • @HowkeyLL
      @HowkeyLL Před 9 lety +2

      Paul Fabrique
      it rotates around an axis and the axis is the center of the main shaft so basically it only rotates when the suspension gos up and down while keeping the two wheels connected constantly. they dont go apart.

      +Nadejda Schmidt Unfortunatley no, the Tatra V8 diesel engine is purpose designed for these trucks and off road work, the Scania engine is designed for on road work and delivers its power in a different way, the same goes for the gearbox. Tatras are already the best off road trucks in the world.
