- Greenwood County Part 1: • 14 Kansas Ghost Towns ...
Greenwood County had so much cool stuff to find that it needed two episodes! This part takes us around the southern half of the county. Not only are there more than a dozen ghost towns, but I also found five interesting bridges that were each over 100 years old. I really enjoyed my tour of this county that almost 70% of the population has left since the mid-20th century!

My mother grew up in Reece. My Grandfather, Boone Corney owned and operated the barber shop in Reece. He also did drycleaning as well as cut hair. Haircuts were 10 cents. He also owned the first car in Reece. Mom went to school there, for how long I'm not sure. My family is buried in the in the cemetery east of town. I love going back to visit. Thanks for stopping at Reece, it brought back great memories.
Thank you! I really enjoyed check out Reece - such a nice and quiet little community. 😊
The concrete foundation is a home that was started and never finished. You were at the south end of twin falls where the bridge was out. You were at the north end where the road east of Climax ends. Twin Falls moved to Climax when the railroad went through. Our annual Masonic Lodge fundraiser is at the Climax school the first weekend of October, fish & nut fry! Come on out!
Thank you for the info on the building and Twin Falls! I’d love to come out for the fish fry!
Please do! And tell your friends!
I have lived in KS most all my life... except for ten years I spent in TX. I had no idea there were so many ghost towns in KS. Love the videos. Thank you for doing this.
Yes because of all the western expansion and pioneering in the 1800’s, a lot of Kansas towns because ghost towns. There are hundreds of them actually, some have nothing left anymore. Thanks for watching!
Thank you very much for the 2nd half. I grew up in Greenwood County from 1950 until 1970. My family helped settle the area on eastern side in Pleasant Grove Township (Neal, and the ghost towns of Fame/Rocky Ford & Carroll) near Toronto in Woodson County. It is the 2nd least populated township now in the County after Salem Twsp.
Flint Ridge, which you did not seem to stop at may have been near one of the post Civil War freed black slave communities organized by Eastern Abolitionist Churches for the now free slaves. Unfortunately that community in Greenwood County like so many of the others were failures and by 1900 most other than Nicodemus in Graham County (now a National Historic Site) were quickly failures. The well meaning eastern Churches who subsidized these settlements did not take into account that most of the "free homesteads" they had selected for the freed slaves were in prairie pasture land that was unfit for most farming, being the rocky Flint Hills. Additionally, the former slaves had little experience growing the types of crops that would grow in the few valley fields along the intermittent streams that got about 1/2 the annual rainfall of the south where they learned farming.
On another note, until the late 1940s there was a Greenwood County League for basketball and track. There were still High Schools in Reece, Neal, Tonovay, Lamont, Quincy, Climax, Virgil, Piedmont along with Severy, Hamilton & Madison that were members of the annual Greenwood county basketball tournament. Eureka was excluded due to size. Madison, Severy, Tonovay, Hamilton & Virgil were usual sites of the tournament, as they had the most modern gyms and most seating capacity.
Thank you for all that great information! I stopped at Flint Ridge but didn’t see anything remaining except a farm and what I showed in the video. It was a great adventure going to as many as I could find! I tried to go to Fame but the roads were too rough for my car!
Don't know why I love old bridges so much but I really do. Love the playgrounds...awesome dangerous fun.
I love them because of the interesting architecture that you don’t see these days!
Metal slides were fun
@@alerobabes01 Fast as heck... but hot
Greenwood county was a neat area. Towns still had stories of interest. Down the country road there is always something amazing. Bridges were impressive in design. Drone coverage provided beauty of areas. Heathy eating will keep these great video on the roads.😊
Such a fun 2 days of exploring! Interesting history and some hidden gems down those dirt roads!
That is so cool, my grandfather was born in Climax, Kansas and my mother was born in Eureka. Thank you for showing me the town because I have never been there, I only heard about it.
It’s a very interesting area with the natural beauty and historical information!
@@TravelwithaWiseguy Yes, it is in the flint hills. I love driving through that area!
Glad to hear that Fall River hasn't become a ghost town yet. Lived there with my Grandparents my senior year of high school back in 1979.
I am super-excited that you stopped in Reece! My ancestors John and Emma Batchelor and their children settled there in 1888, and probably made up about 10% of the population. Three of their four children left the area, but their son (my great-great grand-father) William Ralph Batchelor stayed in Reece and kept a diary of his daily life on the farm there from 1887-1889! His wife Minnie died in 1909, and even though they had 9 children born in Reece (7 survived to adulthood), all had left Reece by 1930, and William died in 1927, thus ending our lineage in the town (but not the cemetery). I have been itching to visit Reece, and I'm even more excited to do so now. Thank you for sharing Greenwood County with us, and especially Reece!
Awesome post thank you! I really liked Reece and could tell it had quite a history! Appreciate the comment!
I lived in Greenwood County nearly all my life. Little towns like Thrall, Teeterville, Burkett, Kimbro were all oil field communities. When the patch started drying up, so did the towns. Many of the houses were moved to Eureka and Madison.
That bridge at the beginning was used and traveled daily until 2019. In May of that year, we had rain that flooded many roads and the flood destroyed that bridge. We live a few miles away.
It’s a very beautiful bridge! I’m glad it’s at least still there to look at. Hopefully it remains there for a long time!
And when you see those towns (just got to the Star portion) that just have one old run down building standing, you feel lucky that that is there considering how many open fields there are where towns used to be but nothing remains. Glad to have the history, and cemeteries are the best finds. Those names, the dates kind of put it in perspective that this place wasn't just an old building. People lived their lives and eventually died there.
Yeah I feel lucky because I thought I’d show up and find nothing. Kind of a bonus!
@@TravelwithaWiseguy Did it strike you as odd to have cemetery not far from a school? When I see a cemetery such as what you found in Rocky Ford or this one, I imagine where it would have been in relation to the town and i always picture cemeteries more on the outskirts of town. Seems odd to me that they would build a cemetery right across the street from a school. I don't know, seems like an odd place to me but maybe it's just me.
Yes! That one was interesting because they were so close to each other. I’d love to have seen what the original town layout was. Very observant of you!
Even though I'm from Topeka, I've visited several of the towns there, mostly for my RR studies. Reece used to have facilities for the MP RR like water tank and roundhouse. When I followed the Santa Fe south from Emporia, I plum missed Utopia-got lost- but it was a cattle loading point. There was a depot and elevator at Climax. It is kind of creepy when you just stand in town and it's so quiet. The depot was moved to Cedar Point where it sat and deteriorated to the point where it had to be burned down (firefighter practice) about 10 years ago. Keep up the good work!
A range of emotions come over me when I see old abandon play grounds like that. I think about all the kids that played here all the laughter that could be heard. Sad, where are they now. I love to see inside old abandoned churches. I think about how they worshiped .
Interesting thoughts! We can learn so much from exploring and finding these places. And it’s good for the soul!
Thanks for Pt. 2, I've been looking forward to this one since watching Pt. 1. :) My wife and I drove through Eureka a couple days ago and almost stopped for a couple Lo-Mar burgers. So cool to see you stopped for one. After a busy day in the fresh air and sunshine, I bet it hit the spot. We sure appreciate the time you put in to do these.
Oh my gosh it was so good haha! They have great fries and shakes too 😊 That trip was a lot of fun - glad people are enjoying it! Thanks!
I grew up in Hamilton. Drove by the Utopia church and Tonavay a billion times. There used to be another structure of Tonavay at the hwy 99&54 intersection. Loved going in the Antique mall there. Haven't been back in the area for about 20 years.
Yeah there was so much stuff at the antique mall. I spoke with the owner briefly. Interesting people living there!
Good job coach: Your videos about Kansas have become my viewing "go-to".
Aww thanks man! Much appreciated!
Looking at Utopia and Ivanpah and all of the other ghost towns you have profiled here, you taught me something else that I didn't expect. I grew up in Kansas, I feel like I know the state like the back of my hand but it turns out I don't, heck there are a lot of things about my old home town you have taught me I didn't know about. But I especially wanted to point out driving along the road you see some old buildings sometimes all by themselves, I had no idea that some of these old buildings may represent whole towns that used to be here and all that is left is one church, one school, maybe just one house somehow still standing. Mind blowing to me.
I’m the same way most of my life. I wouldn’t have given it much thought beyond driving past either. Glad I’m learning more and more each time!
@@TravelwithaWiseguy I would love to be able to do what you do in the state in which I currently live, Iowa.
I need to do some major Iowa exploring sometime. I did dip into it for an upcoming small town USA video 😉
@@TravelwithaWiseguy Lots of great small towns here with some neat things to see
This was a spectacular video! Loved how you gave us a peek into the old buildings and visited the cemeteries. Also appreciated you showing us the progress on the map with the highlighter. The old schools with the playground equipment were amazing. Thanks so much for sharing this with us!!!
Thank you! Yeah I was lucky to find all that cool stuff in one day! It was a lot of fun!
I like your way of talking that is easy to catch even for a foreigner as I am form ITALY 🇮🇹. Ciao
That’s so awesome! Thank you for watching from Italy!!
oh wow, I love antique stores and that store looks big!
County population going up a little steady. Flint Hills Paradise!
Love the Flint Hills!
Another great video! Enjoyed seeing all the merry go rounds!! Loved the end of the video! 🤣 Hungry for a hamburger!🤣
Haha thank you! It was really good 😜
That little building in Ivanpah looks really interesting. Someone has to be keeping that place in the good condition that it's in for it to be as clean as is it. On Google Maps it's listed as the Ivanpah School. Such a cute little building! Reece looks like a nice little hidden gem. That find in Star, Kansas was cool. When I see buildings like that old school it always makes me wonder if it can somehow be renovated/preserved in some manner. Another thing I always wonder about, in regards to small towns out in the middle of nowhere, who plows their streets in the winter time? 🤔
I would say either a local farmer plows the road or it doesn’t get plowed at all! I grew up in the country and often our roads had no one to take care of them. We had 4 wheel drive!
For my tastes, your best video yet. So many gems. Thanks for posting.
Thank you very much! It was a lot of fun to do!
oh, if the old buildings, could talk what things, we could learn . thanks for sharing. love the history your doing
Thank you! Fun area to explore!
Love your videos!!! A couple years ago I started exploring waterfalls in Kansas and I have lived here my whole life and I found so many towns I had never heard of and countryside I never thought I would see in Kansas!! Thanks so much for sharing your videos and the drone footage very awesome 😎
Thank you very much for those kind words! Kansas has some hidden treasures like you’re talking about. Fun to find them! I appreciate the support!
So beautiful and peaceful. Thank you so much!
100% agree! Thanks!
This is cool! A lot of boony cruising on those back roads. ❤
My grandmother and her sister graduated from Piedmont High school. My mother, 2 aunts and 2 uncles went to the Christian Church there. Many of my family, including my husband are buried there.
Recently found your channel. Lots to catch up on. My home county is Neosho country Kansas. Think you would find a few ghost towns, small towns and interesting history along the MK&T railroad.
Thank you! I’d love to explore Neosho County! Hopefully someday!
Yay for Thursday nights!!!
Always look forward for your videos!!!
Thanks for have travel with you!!
Thank you! I hope you continue to enjoy the Thursday night videos! I appreciate the support!
I think when the post office closes, the death's knell has sounded.
As always...
Agreed! Thank you for the support!
Neat old bridges. I've traveled to several places and photographed old bridges. Some of those were also on interesting, dead-end roads where I almost got stuck while attempting to turn around. Loved the old school buildings also.
Yeah I usually don’t show too many bridges but there were too many good ones on this trip!
Love Fall River lake my grandparents live out there by the lake. Greenwood county is soooooo pretty.
Agreed!
I have several family members who graduated high school at Tonovay and I attended Sunday school at Utopia 64 years go.
Great trip. Wonderful cemeteries and scenery.
Thank you! It was a lot of fun!
I love Kansas, have traveled through it many times. Have a good friend in Scott City.
Awesome video and thank you for posting. I live in Fall River. Yep, you are right. It's on the verge of becoming a ghost town one day.
Thank you very much for watching! I was thinking of including Fall River because there are some cool old buildings downtown. Maybe another video (hopefully not as a ghost town).
As a native of nearby Butler County, I don't get home as often as is like. I enjoy your videos. Good job.
Thank you very much! Lots of interesting places in Butler County to explore too!
Nice quite out of the way towns.😊
Yes it was!
Love your Kansas videos! Please come back to Lecompton sometime!😊❤
Thank you! It’s definitely on my list. I’m thinking of a “small town USA” video about Lecompton at some point.
The concrete foundation for a house with THOLE on it, was a schoolmates house that he was building. Then he father passed so he stopped construction.
Thanks for the info!
Thank you for these videos. I love watching your video's, especially about Kansas, as I live in Fredonia in Wilson County. Wilson County is on the southeast side of Greenwood. We have a few ghost towns ourselves. Some still have people living there, such as New Albany, which is near Fall River, Buxton, Lafountain, Coyville, Benidict, & Buffalo. Other's that are Ghost Towns are Guilford, Middletown, Dun, Roper & Rest to name a few. And don't forget there was Fort Row near Coyville. Thanks for the videos. I look forward to watching more.
Thank you very much! I’d love to make some similar videos about Wilson County sometime. Thanks for the info!
I just found your channel today and have already watched a few, I live OP, now which is near KC. I grew up in the Wichita area, suburbs. So I lived in not small but like populations of like 10-25k. Those I never minded, but even small towns give me the creeps. I love watching these videos, because I would be so scared to go myself. I feel that way about big cities as well, or at least ones where I have to walk most of the time like NYC, or Vegas.
There's just something about small towns that're charming, but if I was there I'd be freaked out.
Glad you found the channel! Thanks for watching! I understand the hesitancy of visiting some of these places, but I’ve never felt uncomfortable in these small towns. I’ve found that as long as you’re open and honest about why you’re visiting, most anyone you come across will be welcoming.
Went to Piedmont today (June 15th, 2024, after watching this video. The what seemed unoccupied building shown at 14:02 in the video is (today?. how long?) a restaurant, Jim and Lila's Cafe which also sells a few groceries. Isn't open on Sundays, of course. The fried chicken dinner was well worth the trip Best green beans and mashed potatoes side dishes I have had in a long, long time.. Partner in crime ate a cheeseburger with fries. Cheeseburger was huge and the fries freshly cooked from scratch, not frozen fries. Highly recommend the place.
Awesome! That’s making me hungry now 😂
Very interesting trip today I wish you could have found Twin Falls
Me too! Thanks!
Thank you for going to Eureka, I haven't been there in a while but I do recognize the place where you had your healthy meal, that was funny.
😂😂It was so GOOD!!
@@TravelwithaWiseguy I am glad. I still have family in Eureka.
Man, you found some jems out there in Kansas.
Thanks for all of your videos. They are really informative. My mother was raised in a small town, Allen KS. Her parents migrated there from West Virginia. Maybe check it out sometime when you’re in the area.
Thank you very much! I’ll keep that in mind!
The rock bridges are worth the trip. I live in Overland Park and hopefully this coming Spring I can make a trip in that direction.
Yeah they are really great!
Lawrence ks here!! I definitely would have traipsing through that house in utopia!! Please do Nicodemus next, the history is fascinating!!! That's one of my favorite Kansas finds, a b d hit up Ernestines BBQ, if it's still open!! You won't regret it!!
Actually I have already filmed in Nicodemus and plan to release a video from there in a few weeks!
I love it. From eureka thank u
Back in the 70's, worked with a guy who lived in Climax and drove back and forth to ICT daily....his initials were NG, sold him my VW bug to drive back and forth.
Very interesting video! My dad was born in Climax. My mom had friends in Reece and Piedmont we used to go visit when I was younger.
Thank you! I enjoyed visiting all 3 of those towns - especially Piedmont!
It is absolutely beautiful country out there. The best time to go in my opinion is in the spring right after everything turns green.
I lived on a ranch near Piedmont & attended school there. Where the rodeo grounds are was the baseball field. We had very good baseball & basketball teams. There was another part to the school . I think the last class that graduated from high school was in 1963.
@@pattygonzales1749 Awesome info! Do they still do rodeos there?
@@TravelwithaWiseguy I don’t know.
Awesome
Yes the lodge still operates I know many of the members there, all childhood friends
Born in Oklahoma, raised in Kansas I'm living in Kansas right now. Hope your doing well.
Thank you! Same to you!
Hoping you also visit Bennington in Ottawa County Ks. It was a boom town until they put the highway off in the distance.. with most of it owned by my great grandfather William Ostrander also Mayor.
Would love to visit!
I totally would have went in that house in Utopia! Hello from Wichita
You’re braver than me 😂😂
My grandma was born in Climax , KS in 1907 and lived there her first three years.
Reminde me of Fredrick Oklahoma
We have a little town called Ivanpa here in California, in the San Joaquin Valley. I'd love to see something on ghost towns here in my home state.
I would love to do that! Hopefully someday!
Piedmont Kansas my hime town and i live 1/4 mile east of her on my 4th Generation Ranch. Piedmont git started in 1881 but had been around since 1840's-60's was a trading post for the Osage Indians on the Osage Res. But Piedmont at its hite had close to 1,000 people in her population. Buildings; 2 Lumber Yards, 3 or 4 Stores, 3 Restaurants and only 1 left, 2 Livery Stables, Doctors Office, Bank, Grocery Store, Feed Store/Saddle and Harness shop, Car Dealer ship, blacksmith shop, Undertacker(funnly the undertacker also was the baber and ran the ambulance), Baber Shop, Creamery, FRISCO trains station/water tower/ stockyard/ 2 side tracks from the main track/ and a Y for turning the train around, 2 schools a high school, and shop, and grade school, the monkeys to the west to the gym are the orginal play grown and the marrygo around the bug twisty slide is from the 1990's or so. But if your ever passing by Piedmont Kansas swimg into Jim and Lia's Cafe for some good food and to learn some good history on the town.
That church in Piedmont was operational up until the late 90's early 2000's
omg that Lo Mar's looks legit
It was!
Good God, man! Have you never seen Children of the Corn?
Yes I have! Loved it! 😂😂
@@TravelwithaWiseguy 🌽🌽🌽🤣😂😅
My address is on 40th. TwinFalls district. Recently moved here. Try n found out about concrete building
The towns are not always exactly where gps says they were. I live in what used to be a town. GPS puts it at the main intersection of two old highways, where there is currently a gas station but that's not where it was; it was actually about a mile and a half away by an old RR crossing. There are still some houses there and the old store and an active church so that was the actual old town.
Very true! That’s why I try to use physical maps when possible.
Waldo, in Russell county is turning into a ghost town
Yes I’ve been there! Could be a video in the future.
My dad went to the Ivanpah school in the 1930's. Our family still lives three miles west.
Oh wow that’s awesome! Do you know much about the town that was there? Were there other things besides the school and cemetery?
Did you stop at the Greenwood County KS Historical Society in Eureka? It is across the street, east of the county courthouse. They have the answers to many of these questions. My mom prepared many exhibits about Reece KS and Sallyards.
I didn’t stop there but would love to go back and visit!
I grew up NW of Eureka & went to grades 4-6 in tonovay school!
That’s awesome! I’m glad the auditorium is still there!
My grandpa went to school at the Ivanpah. That was the school many years ago.
I hope u have a companion on your travels. For safety. Please b careful. Don't go it alone
I usually travel alone. I have been for many years actually. I used to travel around the world so I’m pretty comfortable with how to be safe. Obviously anything can happen. I appreciate the concern!
Thanks for the filming of GW county. It was great.
Thanks it was a lot of fun!
My dad went to school in Reece. My sister lives there now.
Nice! Such a peaceful little community!
I wonder if Twin Falls is under the waters of Fall River Lake?
I would say likely!
I also ate a little more restaurant at the very end of your video. Food was pretty good there enjoy your video my friend she lived in Eureka she was a doctor there back in the mid 90s
Thank you for watching! It was a fun trip!
you forgot beaumont! very neat town!
Beaumont is in Butler County, not Greenwood. And I have showcased Beaumont in a different video previously.
One should have a metal detector when exploring these vacant places. Several places in Nebraska and Iowa are beginning to become like Kansas
How many of the old towns from the old maps are at the bottom of the reservoir?
Have you ever done Denmark Ks. If so which episode. My relatives are buried there
I haven’t but it looks like an interesting place!
Do you have land suitable for agriculture or a sheep farm? ? Is water and electricity available? And it has a small house? How many spaces are available and prices? And the possibility of installments???
I Had a thought, since that Ivanpah building is open, I don't know how many people visit the place, somebody may be able to squat in that building for months without seeing a single person.
It felt like it was probably open to the public but on a farmer’s property. And it was kept pretty clean, so someone must stop by from time to time.
@@TravelwithaWiseguy Glad whomever keeps it up is doing so. Always glad to see history stay alive. Sorry so many ghost towns are now in completely open fields with no trace. All that potential history lost.
Though you could feature Eureka in your Small Town Sunday videos
I thought about it, but it might be a little too big at the moment for what I’m thinking. More in the 1000 and down population category for now.
Going towards Harper their was an English settlement called run a me. Did you know about this?
Do you mean Runnymeade? I’ve heard of it but have never been there.
@@TravelwithaWiseguy it's been over 20 yrs since i've been in that area. A marker along the road told about it. Wise guy your spelling is probably correct. Have a good day!
I’ll definitely check it out next time I’m out that way!
I live in Eureka, Ks
Life is water and sunlight
What map are you using?
Delorme Atlas and Gazetteer
assume a old school house in ivanpah regarless neat old building getting ready at beginning of sumner to travel around sumner and in to oklahoma looking for old ghost towns to video
Have a great trip!
What drives u, your passion and ambition to do this?
I love to go places I’ve never been before and learn about the history of each area. I’ve traveled all my life so it’s just part of my DNA I think. I love it!
Love your videos, but the wind sure messes up your audio sometimes. Perhaps you should try a clip on mic.
Thank you for that comment. I have a question for you so I hope you see this and are able to respond. Which part of the video did you have problems hearing the audio? I’ve asked this to others and they’ve not had issues. It was VERY WINDY that day and I was using a noise reduction microphone to muffle the wind the best I could, but sometimes it’s impossible in Kansas haha. So if you can tell me the time stamp on the video I can check that out. Thank you!
John, I had the issues toward the beginning of the video. You were at the beautiful bridge close to Eureka, ended at :58, then again in the Utopia segment starting at 2:19.
I do watch these videos on my TV, if that can make a difference.
Hope this helps.
Thanks for sharing your zig zagging adventures down Kansas back roads!!
My favorite pass time is dirt road driving and searching out abandoned places!
Thank you for that info! I’ve noticed on my tv the wind is worse than on my phone too. A lot of times I’ll try to stand in a place that is less windy but in those I didn’t have anything to block that darn wind. I appreciate the reply and I’ll try to do better in the future!
What about Quincy Kansas
It’s in the previous video
Fk yeah! Rep some KS! ✊
Do you see many rattlesnakes in these ghost towns?
I haven’t seen any, but that doesn’t mean they aren’t out there 🤷🏼♂️
Im 73 year old. And i have jokers pointing guns at me. Telling me to move on this has hope. Tks
Sad thing is the towns die because the young think life is bright lights, brainwashed into forgetting about fulfilment.
These are the kinds of places where the homeless and illegal immigrants need to be bused and flown to. All this land going to waste, but somehow the country has a land shortage problem
I said in the last video that I had visited Eureka and Greenwood County twice I didn’t realize they use the term townships mentioning different places they’re mostly on the East Coast like Pennsylvania New Jersey Michigan Massachusetts I didn’t know they had it in Kansas to learn something new every day right videos I’ll show me those places I rode through didn’t even know where I was at very beautiful country out there
Excellent Vid and your effort is much appreciated!
I much enjoy the History of this area, with your video showing what little remains.
I had some memorable times in Climax a half 'a lifetime ago. Was married in the old school.
Fall River was the site where a few friends rented the High School in the late 60's/early 70's. They manufactured Hash Pipes which were advertised and sold in "Rolling Stone" magazine.
Wild times indeed.
Oh wow that is wild indeed! And thank you very much! I really enjoyed putting this together. Made me think of possibly doing it for other counties in this manner, because it was a fun way to explore the area and connect the towns together. I appreciate the comment!
@@TravelwithaWiseguy Maternal side of our family is from Western Ks; Clark/Ford County.
Oral History which I heard first hand placed a Stage Stop West of Minneola. Custer's 7th Cav allegedly bivouac'd there en-route to there demise at Little Big Horn. 30 years ago there were faint remnants of the Stage Stop. That fascinated me at the time.
Very interesting! Yeah once you start digging into history like that it can pull you in!
The cement structure is a house base ment that never got finished. About 1/2 mile from twin silos
Thanks!
