When you said many people went there, saw how hard it was to live, and left, but some people stayed, that reminded me that Kansas has a rich history of hearty people who can adapt to most any circumstance and the people who made Nicodemus work are among those hearty people.
Glad to see you've gotten to Nicodemus! I'm the historian and owner of Ernestine's BBQ, which is now closed. When there are nearly 20 people who live there, I wouldn't classify it as a GHOST town. Ghosts are just that. It gives everyone the impression that there is no one living there. BUT thank you for visiting and sharing our town. It is a unit of THE NATIONAL PARKS!
Just this week we saw a lovely grandma wear a t-shirt that read Nicodemus, KS. She said she grew up there. Thank u for this Nicodemus you tube. Everything u do is well done. Bravo, Sir.
I'm sure most people who are from Kansas know about Nicodemus but I'm glad you are able to get people who watch your channel who maybe have never stepped foot into Kansas exposed to it. One thing I like about your channel is that even though you do more than Kansas, Kansas has a lot to offer. But most people not from here just think "eh, it's just Kansas, nothing to see here" and completely ignore the state. I have always tried to tell skeptical people who I meet, there is more in Kansas than you think when it comes to geography and history and attractions. Thank you for the work you do in showing off the rich history of the state and showing that there is reason to visit Kansas, and also proving me right :).
That’s very nice of you to say! I’ve always loved exploring Kansas so I’m glad others can see some interesting places here too. I’m slowly trying to expand and show these things in other states, but I’m sure Kansas will always be at the top of the list on my channel.
Nicodemus! Remember I had mentioned this place in an earlier comment. You said you would make it and here you are. I have not been there but really want to
The music for this video is outstanding. It 's the foundation story of these people's lives that stayed together marking this place in history . What a rich place of life's lessons to learn from. Thanks for great video of value.
Thank you! Fortunately CZcams has a lot of good free music to use on these videos! I think it adds a great deal when showing the highlights of these wonderful areas 😊
I’m a descendant of Nicodemus. Our family was enslaved in Missouri & came from there. My cousin and I are going to visit tomorrow. It will be both of our first time. Appreciated the comment above clarifying that it’s not a ghost town, as there are 20 descendants who live there. I would also say that many descendants are wanting to possibly return and reconstruct what our ancestors had initially imagined. The town is a symbol of self-determination and independence. Long live Nicodemus!
Loved this one! Nicodemus has always intrigued me, and I did get to visit it years ago.....before all the historical updates. I'd love to go back now and visit! Great video!
Nice shirt cousin! 🤣 I have a friend that ran the back to back this year. There are so many little towns and cool places to see in Kansas, Nicodemus has been on the list, haven't made it up there yet. How far is it from Pioneer Village? 😄
Hoping you go through Woodson County. Yates Center the county seat was once the hay capitol of the world. So many great towns there. Toronto, Kalia, Neosho Falls to name a few. There was a post office name Juse that my great grandfather's brother, Jesse Pickering, named after his daughter Jersusha, near Turkey Creek. In 1890 it was moved to Keck. You can find info on Woodson County Genweb.
Thanks for watching! I definitely meant no disrespect by the term ghost town - it’s a common descriptor used for many types of towns like this. I really loved my visit!
Thank you so much to let's us know those beautiful story. I wonder if they can revived those ghost town's ? There is big population of homeless in Kansas city.I also think there is a lot the people who just don't want to work.I came in USA 28 years ago with 3 kids I worked hard and Jehovah's bless me .I teach my children respect and discipline. We are successful and i thank the Lord for this beautiful country . May Jehovah continues to blessed America.
Maybe the new migrants can move to these ghost towns and if they can improve them, stay there. This town looks nice as it is. Keep it that way and don't let it end up like Chicago, NYC, or Detroit. Small towns are great.
Good video of a historical town. In Morris County, KS, is what is left of the town of DUNLAP, KS, about 8-miles or so southeast of Council Grove. It also has connections to the freed slaves after the Civil War. It is supposed to 1 of 5 towns in Kansas created for freed slaves but was eventually taken over by white people. There are 2 cemeteries for the town: 1 for white inhabitants at the time and about a mile north of that cemetery is one dedicated for the black inhabitants. The African American Cemetery was placed on the National Register of Historical Places a few years ago. Not much left of the town: a few houses, old school gymnasium, and a few other structures.
They never got the railroad in Nicodemus unfortunately. They tried but weren’t able to convince them is what I read. That was a big reason the town declined.
The country is where all the large families are. With everyone moving to the cities for jobs it's too expensive for large families. We aren't going to have enough works to pay social security for us baby boomers
Growing up at times in Kansas you learn about its history! Including Nicodemus. Which wonders how much orange kool aid is the GOP giving out there! Lewis Black would have a field day!

Thank you very much! I’m glad it came off well, I really wanted it to!
Well kept. Nice little place
This one just hits the mark. I always wanted to go there and never did. Now I have through you.
Thank you! It was definitely an interesting and unique place to visit. Highly recommended!
I've lived in Kansas all my life and never knew the importance of the city. Thank you for sharing.
Thanks for watching!
Thank you so much for taking us along with you!
It was fun and educational! Thanks for watching!
Nicodemus! Remember I had mentioned this place in an earlier comment. You said you would make it and here you are. I have not been there but really want to
Yes! A few people have mentioned it. Glad I was able to visit!
I've visited often, and drive by frequently. I also know descendents of the community. Thanks for highlighting this town.
Awesome! Such a great place to visit!
Thank you so much for showcasing Nicodemus, the history is fascinating, the people wonderful, and everyone should know about this town!!!
Thanks for watching! Definitely one of my favorite places to visit!

Nice! What was different before the updates? Was it more run down? I really enjoyed my visit!
First heard about Nicodemus when I read the book Bird, KS by Tony Parker.
John i've heard the first winter they dug into the banks of the Solomon river, a small hole through top for a chimney.
That’s wild to think about!
Great video. Grew up in Kansas, I never knew this. Awesome! I want to go there now!
Thanks! You’d really enjoy it. The people are great and a lot of history!
My granddad (born 1901) grew up in Graham County near Bogue and told me about Nicodemus when he was alive. Not many people know about it.
It's an interesting place to visit - I recommend it!
Great video lot of history there .
What a pretty little town
♥️😊
It always amazes me that small towns like this have been Google Mapped with the Google Map Car but some areas in larger cities haven't
Very true! I’m always looking at Google Earth to get a preview of what might be there!
You did a really good job on this video😊
I appreciate that! I wanted it to come off well 😊
Very interesting place, I'd really like to visit one day. I like that you're now considered a cousin to Nicodemus, so cool!!
It’s definitely worth it if you’re ever in the area!

Haha thanks! Loved visiting! It’s about 2 hours from Nicodemus to Minden, Nebraska (Pioneer Village).
Last weekend in july they have a big celebration.

Awwee! SWEET! Love this video!
Thank you 😊
DIRECTLY NORTH IN NEBRASKA , THERE IS ALSO AN ALL BLACK SETTLEMENT, BUT AT THE MINUTE
CANNOT RECALL THE NAME!
If you've been to Nicodemus, KS more than once, you're considered a cousin to the people of Nicodemus.
beautiful town
Interesting history
did the railroad bypass it?
They never got the railroad in Nicodemus unfortunately. They tried but weren’t able to convince them is what I read. That was a big reason the town declined.
@@TravelwithaWiseguy Was racism involved when it comes to Nicodemus not getting a railroad, do you know?
I don’t know 🤷🏼♂️
You may wish to do one on Topaz Mill
Thank you!
Black gospel is calming to listen to.
I really like that song 😊
ALSO CHECK DEWITTY NEB!!
Looks like an interesting history!
When I go to national parks my collectible is magnets so I'd pick up a magnet
That’s a good one!
Is Ernestines BBQ still open??? Best BBQ EVER!!!!
I think it is! I didn’t stop unfortunately.

What song is playing with this video. Awesome
It is called Oh Freedom! By the Golden Gospel Singers
