  • I’ve had many good adult ballet experiences over the years but my last studio was not the best and I felt like I needed to explain why I left and what my plans are going forward.

@AllieB! Wow! Thank you, and congratulations for sharing so many deets (details)! You gave a masterclass in what adult ballet is, and is NOT, about!
Id really like to have a written transcript of what you shared here. You have plenty of courage, and you're a grown woman, and you're a multi talented person. Really hope you'll keep going forward with your learning, including ballet (if you want to continue ballet), but also whatever else you'd like to pursue. Thanks so much, again! 👍🏽

It's such a shame that there were so many bad experiences during your adult dance career. It's hard when our passions are sullied and diminished through the acts of others. But whatever you do, don't give it up. It doesn't sound like you intend to anyway, so that's good, but I wanted to say it so you know you have someone's support and encouragement. Find the fun on your own, make dancing yours again, and rebuild that connection. Stay strong and don't let others ruin your joy. Thank you for sharing your story. I look forward to seeing more dance videos from you in the future!

I am sorry about your experience and I agree that your professional service as a photographer should have been properly compensated. With regard of adult ballet classes... mixed feeling. I find that it is best to just join a ongoing beginner classes as an adult ( assuming you can find them), be humble and stick to a progressive curriculum and really work your basic technique, specifically trying to really get strong in the core for stability. This way the teacher can truly correct and gradually you can improve and not get hurt. I am taking studio classes but also ballet private lesson with Ballet Conrad Institute ...I love it, unbelievable how hard it is to learn and stay strong! The reality of ballet is that it takes a long time to change the body, especially an adult body. Open classes are, in my opinion, not a place to learn as there are too many people who come on and off, different levels, ages, etc so I can see from a teacher perspective how it would be hard to address each individual in these classes without consistency. I was told once that adult classes are " follow along" and I find it overall true. I rely on my technique learned as a teen and it is still paying off .However, I have friends who have never done ballet when they were young and after 5 yrs of open adult ballet classes are still frustrated as they cannot do yet a stable pirouette. If you were never taught the progression at the barre and then at the center, being corrected each time in a methodically way, well this is what you get, frustration, instability and at worse, an ankle sprain. I would say do not give up! Ballet is so beautiful....but truthfully so hard.Perhaps you can petition a ballet teacher you know and get started with your own group of adults? I agree with you, we are so willing to pay for these services and focused on the learning that it is, even from a business perspective, strange that more ballet schools are not dedicated to the " adult ballet business".

awww nice to hear your story. You have a right to complain. I take adult ballet classes 4 times a week on average (in person…. soon as i heard i don’t need a mask anymore!)… i haven’t even bothered auditioning for Nutcracker. My ballet dreams went unfulfilled in my teen years cause i gave it up (and lost my mind:(()

  • @starmelodyelizabethb7380

I feel you all the way . I too would like adults to learn on pointe , learn variations, and do shows. Here in P A where I live it's rare to find these needs.

I am so incredibly sorry you were treated with such disrespect by that studio. The ballet world has ways and ways to go in terms of inclusivity and there is a lot of discrimination against older dancers and adult dancers. You are doing a great thing by speaking up about your experience. The more schools and companies are held accountable, the more they will be pressured to change for the better.
Also - when I was a younger student dancer I LOVED taking classes alongside adult ballet dancers and some of my most supportive ballet peers were adult dancers. I’m wishing you all the best as you continue your journey and I hope you are able to find a healthy and supportive ballet environment in the future ❤️

Your comment at the beginning when "she made you feel like you were doing so good/but also gave you good/fair corrections", one of my first teachers popped in my head immediately. Having that good/supportive teacher and continuing to have them is why i lasted in ballet classes for a number of years and through college. like for the most part all of my teachers have been great. the one was meh, because i was a clear beginner level in a beginners class (the other kids were theatre majors, who clearly were better but had to take ballet 1 for credit). the theatre kids were very nice ofc. but 1 meh teacher out of 7/8 sounds like a good deal compared to what you've been through.
stinks that your experiences in adult ballet were like this. :/. toxicity is never fun. hope you find a better situation :), and eventually find an awesome/supportive studio if possible.
also i've had classmates like you in beginners class, where they were clearly intermediate level, but the teacher never made them feel weird or anything. some even wore pointes to do barre variations and all that. plus they always tended to give me a pointer here or there, or someone to copy off at barre/in centre.
in my one recital the adult class had a whole dance like the other classes at the studio. but for a proper ballet like Nutcracker, or Gisselle like you mentioned... it would've been interesting x). All i know is if my classes number was cut after we all worked hard on it, we would've been frustrated for sure...

I am so sorry you went through this. I have also struggled so much to find my place as an adult beginner. The only performance opportunity I’ve had is as a parent in Nutcracker party scene, and even that was a struggle to get. I’ve been in and out of so many “adult open classes.” Almost no one will teach an adult pointe, even if we are strong enough. I almost quit ballet completely once, and have considered it multiple times due to frustration. I hope ballet opportunities for adults keeps growing in a positive direction. Keep going! ❤❤

Hi Allie. I'm glad you told your story. I'm sorry these people treated you that way. It's says more about who they are than who you are. I hope you will always value yourself. By the way, your hair looks nice 😊

I'm so sorry you had that experience! I'm from Cincy too and have been struggling to find adult classes. I've done a few at Cincinnati Ballet's new studio and everyone there was so nice and it was a genuine class. Nobody talked down to us bc we were adults or anything like that. The teachers were really nice and so were the few people I talked to. I like Cincinnati Ballet because it's on my way to school, however, I don't live anywhere near it (I commute about an hour to school). But definitely check it out if you have a chance. I try to pop in when I can but I'm usually busy working and going to nursing school.

I can relate a lot to your story with the teacher who just yelled and screamed at you. I’m also an adult dancer with an ADD brain who had to push myself extra hard to avoid getting yelled at by a teacher like that 😂 so nothing but sympathy for what you went through. 💕

I started at 15 doing adult classes. and trying to find a studio that would take me took and let me do pointe work. Finally doing syllabus work this year. I told the studios I didn't mind being with younger studios but nobody wanted me.

I know this is a bit cliché - but their behavior says so much more about who they are as a company than it does about your talents. I'm sad that there are teachers and companies like that out there shaping young dancers minds and hearts. Ick.

    • @AllieOnPointe
      @AllieOnPointe  Před rokem

I agree and I am sad to think how this is shaping the young dancers there too. I genuinely loved working with all of the dancers (except maybe that one teacher lol)

  • @stefanelisabethgabriela4259

I can't even believe this. 200$ is literally nothing for all the photos you took and hours you spent working on them. What did they expect? It's honestly ridiculous.
