Simon really flexes his musical muscles with this album and does so with great success, exploring music from other world regions and adding his compositional talents to it. Inspired from start to finish, you do get lost in it. We should all be so lost.

Thank you. Paul Simon was unfairly criticised at the time for 'exploiting' African music. It was nonsense because as well as expressing his own love for it, he brought it to the attention of the World. It upset him for a while as I don't think he expected it. But Graceland was hugely successful, as was the music of The Black Mambazo Band. Genius.

Not only that, he paid the musicians WAY more than what the standard rate required. And in the process, he introduced the world to Ladysmith Black Mambazo - a win-win for all. Especially us, the listeners!

There was a lot of controversy at the time about whether artists should perform in South Africa during Apartheid. Paul Simon wanted to showcase the talent in Africa, and insisted that the audience at concerts be open to all races. Both sides had a valid viewpoint, and of course now it is obvious that Simon was the forward-thinking one. thinking

Graceland, the album, was produced during apartheid. Paul Simon had to endure criticism from many people, for one that he was exploiting and appropriating South African culture, when in fact he was highlighting and presenting to the world the wonderful beats, rhythms and sounds that this beautiful country was making. The whole album is a masterpiece to listen to.

Graceland is such a brilliant album. And this is one of its best songs. I love the verse:
"She makes the sign of a teaspoon, he makes the sign of a wave
The poor boy changes clothes and puts on aftershave
To compensate for his ordinary shoes."
Something about the way he sings it, it's just lovely. Great reaction as always!

Nice! The pleasant sounds of the songs from Graceland filled the radio back in 1986 -- "Diamonds on the Soles of Her Shoes", "Graceland", "The Boy in the Bubble", "You Can Call Me Al", "Under African Skies", "Homeless" -- timeless...

Paul Simon is a great singer songwriter. After his success with Simon & Garfunkel in the 60's, Paul Simon went solo in 1970. He has a huge library of songs such as "Mother & Child Reunion", "Me & Julio Down By The Schoolyard", "50 Ways To Leave Your Lover", "Still Crazy After All These Years", "Gone At Last", "My Little Town", "Kodachrome", "Loves Me Like A Rock", "The Boy In The Bubble" etc.

Love this song and the whole album. It was huge in the late 80s. Paul Simon got some grief here in the US for "crossing lines" and playing with South Africans during apartheid, but it missed the point that he made an album and exposed these musicians to the world. Ladysmith Black Mambazo has some great songs that are worth a look as well.

"Spirit Voices" is such a killer song from Rhythm of the Saints. The two best things about it are the happy-sounding guitar and the line, "A lime-green lizard scuttles down the cabin wall." Great imagery from a night when he ingested ayahuasca in South America.
