      Here’s something I’ve not seen anyone comment on and it’s amazing!
      Wizards and Clerics can do ritual casting which is casting spells without losing the spell slot.
      My day starts ALWAYS with every party member getting longstrider cast on them. Lasts until long rest, no concentration and no spell slot cost. It’s a huge movement boost for free.
      Same with detect thoughts, speak with dead, jump and feather fall. None cost spell slots!!!

      Don't long rest too physically close to time sensitive quest (saving someone, house on fire, etc) or you'll find the house burnt down and the person dead. Go outside the autosave point if you remember it.

      - Levelling up OR doing a long rest will reset vendors gold/reroll their current inventory.
      - A vendor requires exactly 600g or 600g worth of items to get to 100 approval. At +5 persuasion, you need to move 2400gp as selling/buying combined to recoup the 600gp investment. After that it is profit.
      - Go to your camp in a ruin, or open world or any different sort of layout will give you the opportunity to loot your camp again, which in the early game (for example when you get Withers and you are in a ruins environment) is very easy extra gold that you may need. (those incences at Shadowheart's tent give 30g each!)
      - On the Nautiloid the moment you spawn in, in that room you can go upstairs to both sides to get extra loot/gold (most people miss it)
      - Go to Long Rest from the "outside world" to 100% trigger any events (such as meeting the guardian for the first time for example), if you do that from your camp when clicking on your bedroll to end the day, they not always load in.
      - And a bonus one: There is a Pitchfork behind the jail in the grove where the tieflings are, at the caverny bit, it's tricky to find, you have to jump around to get it, but its a Pitchfork!! lol
      Any many more, I'm about to make a YT vid about it myself, so not gonna shoot it all haha

    Protip for those not familiar with D&D: If you want to play a caster with armor, Githyanki get proficiency in light and medium armor and swords. In githyanki language a warrior wizard is called a gish, which is where the gaming term comes from (but not the Smashing Pumpkins album title).

    The thing with Barbarian's (and Monk's) unarmoured defence bonuses, is that it's impossible in early-mid game to get comparable AC to just wearing a piece of medium armour. And it's not like your choice is between +1/2AC, or a nice perk, because there are no clothes useful for barbarian until Mountain Pass or Shadowlands. There is no 'but a nice perk' at the other side of this equation, it's just whether you want more AC or not, and in some cases it's literally a choice between +2AC AND some nice perks... or -2AC and no perk. (like Hide armour+2 (no stealth checks disadvantage, +1 to initiative, +1 bonus to dexterity saving throws and checks (basically an equivalent to +2 dex if you're not using ranged or finesse weapons)) or the Grymforge Armour) Even If I could agree that still using armour can be classified as a mistake in the 3rd act, where you do get some really nice barbarian-oriented stuff, it's by no means a noob trap, nor is it obviously a mistake, because it isn't. Do the math people, it's basic addition.
    No, Medium armour is not 'similar to light armour' its much closer to the heavy armour in terms of AC than the light armour, in many cases matches the AC of heavy armour, if we add that +2 from dex (which is how it should be considering what those armour pieces actually are) The reason you got a wrong impression of medium armour, is that you were comparing a good piece of light armour, on a character that has 20 dex, against literally The Weakest Medium Armour In The Game. Even the starting armour of the Fighter or Paladin has more AC.
    Honestly is the Light armour that's garbage, and the only reason one would ever use it, is for some specific pieces that have special effects (and all of those are reserved to act 3, like the bhaalist armour) or because you really don't want to dip into fighter or paladin multiclass for your Astarion or Wyll, or respecc Astarion into a gloomstalker ranger. Aside from that, there is literally no point- If you're a mage of any kind you either get the mage armour, or draconic bloodline which gives you 13 AC+dex modifier for free, which will be more than (or at least equal to) any piece of light armour you can find until act 3 and/or until you get to lvl 9 at which point the traders will get "studded leather+2" which gives 14 AC and +1 to initiative. If you're a rogue or warlock, you can just dip 1-2 lvl's into fighter, paladin, or ranger, (especially gloomstalker ranger for a rogue) to get that medium armour proficiency (and some nice perks like divine smite, action surge, or +3 initiative and completely free attack on the first round of combat, from ranger's gloomstalker sub-class) and, in case of rogue, use some special armour pieces that won't give you disadvantage on stealth checks (like the aforementioned hide armour+2) and you'll still get more AC from it, despite the dex cap: 12+3 or 13+4 (ie. what you can expect from light armour in act1/2) is less than 14+2/16+2/15+4 (ie. what you can expect from medium armour in act1/2. The 15+4 is from a special piece of armour that doesn't have a cap on bonus AC from dex, to get it you need to visit the forgotten realm of... Last Light's Inn's Quartermaster Talli's trade dialogue option. Yeah you can just buy it, it also doesn't impose disadvantages on stealth checks so even Astarion can use it without any issues, and it gives +1 to initiative, and costs just ~600gold). And that keeps being the case until the end of the game- The Best Light armour gives 14 AC, plus up to 6. The best Medium armour gives 17AC plus up to... also 6, because The Armour of Agility has a special perk that removes the dexterity cap, it also imposes no disadvantage on stealth checks.

    • @swanky147
      @swanky147 Před 8 měsíci

      Scrolled down to say exactly this - both by theoretical design and by actual gameplay (what's available and when), medium is far and away the strongest outside specific game-breaking items. Also worth noting that cleric is an effective dip for people who just want to unlock armor - my tavern brawler monk now has a couple casts of bless, guidance, and thunderous reaction, which is more useful to me than the +1 AC and second wind from a fighter dip. Will respec him out of it once I grab an armor that gives proficiency when you equip it. Ranger can also do the trick: med/martial by default, favored enemy can give you heavy proficiency if needed, 3-5 skill proficiencies, resistance to one of fire/cold/poison. Save proficiencies are pretty bad though (str/dex).

    • @GreyfauxxGaming
      @GreyfauxxGaming Před 8 měsíci

      Medium armor and shields actually doesnt impact a Barbarian, only heavy. Tho Monks basically lose all of their features for putting any armor on.
      What you CAN do, to help this, if your AC is a little low, is buy a mage from Skelly bro, and have them learn mage armor, to cast on you, on them and any familiars.

    • @IndependentObserver
      @IndependentObserver Před 8 měsíci

      @@swanky147 Ranger also gives light and medium armour proficiencies, and martial weapons proficiency so now your monk can use any longsword as a "monk weapon" and use dex for scaling- even if that longsword is not Phalar Aluve or Larethian's Wrath. Also, ranger is the only class that can give you heavy armour proficiency from a multiclass- just pick a "favoured enemy: Ranger knight" at lvl 1.

    • @IndependentObserver
      @IndependentObserver Před 8 měsíci

      @@GreyfauxxGaming I know, I literally said that you should use medium armour on Barbarian.
      No, it doesn't. Just like with barbarian, no monk feature (except of course for the unarmoured defence, just like with barbarian) is tied to not using armour, you can just dip 1 lvl into fighter/paladin/ranger and use medium armour on your monk, nothing bad will happen because of it. The thing that probably maybe happened and why you think it's different is- unlike barbarian, monk doesn't have any armour proficiency by default, so you have to do that multiclass to get them, so if you wore a piece of armour on your monk without that multiclass dip, you got smacked in the face with very harsh penalties that come from using a piece of armour you're not proficient in.
      Also, mage armour doesn't stack with barbarian's/monk's unarmoured defence features, it would be insane if it did, they also don't stack with each other- you can't just go 1lvl barbarian 11lvl monk (or the other way around) to get both. The game will just choose whichever gives you more AC and apply that one- if you have a barbarian with 14 dex and 16 con, mage armour will do nothing, because the game can either apply +3 AC from con, or from mage armour- same with Monk, just switch con and wisdom.

    I really wish reactions were explained better in the game, especially with regards to under what conditions they are triggered.

    • @Budder2
      @Budder2 Před 10 měsíci +20

      The way I think about it is reactions are a response to an enemy’s action or movement.
      So the enemy moves outside your melee range? As long as you have a weapon equipped, you can take a reaction to swipe at them as they’re leaving, unless they take the disengage action.
      So an enemy caster is throwing a fireball right in the middle of your party? Reaction to counter spell.
      With the protection fighting style, if an enemy attacks someone other than you, you can use your reaction to interfere with their attack(give them disadvantage) as long as you’re within melee range of the enemy.
      So it’s a reaction to someone else’s action, and it doesn’t have to be on your turn, unlike every other action (movement, action, bonus action).

      Yeah, it would be great for newbie to DnD. What's a Versatile weapon? Finess? CA? Saving Throw? Spell slot to cast? Up cast a spell? Concentration? No Dex bonus on Heavy Armor? Full caster/half caster? Etc...
      To be honest a new player can play on normal difficulty without knowing too much mechanics (and probably learning little by little).

Most underated spell would be jump since anyone can then jump to upserd heights. Combo with featherfall and you can just navigate nearly anywhere.

  • @What_do_I_Think
    @What_do_I_Think Před 7 měsíci +3

    I think, minmaxing is a matter of taste. You can basically play all origin companions as they are and still finish the game. I like to let the main companions be as they are. Maybe except for Shadowheart though, she has an event where it would be naturally to do at least some respecing, but of course not necessary.
    One addition to the reactions, because it got a little lost in video: Some reactions cost spell slots or other resources that replenish not so often. So as you said correctly: It is better to let the system ask, because by wasting resources unnecessarily, you might give up other opportunities.
    Besides this addition from my side, very good information!

    for that first one, I've generally found that medium armor is most often better than unarmored defense for barbarians, in terms of both AC and utility. I'm playing a Dexterity-based barbarian right now with 21 AC using medium armor and a shield.
    Also, medium armor may be better than light armor for AC on a dexterity-based character. If we're talking nonmagical armor on a character with 20 Dexterity, they will have 17 AC whether they're wearing medium or light armor, so long as they're wearing the best type available for each (12+5 vs 15+2). That 17 AC is much easier to achieve with medium armor though because you only need 14 dexterity, and can increase it to 18 AC if you take the medium armor master feat and have at least 16 Dexterity.
    And about finesse weapons, the damage calculations the games give you are correct. They take the finesse into account. You just need to look at the numbers to see which does more damage. Again, I'm seeing this a lot on my Dexterity-based barbarian.

You never know when you may discover later that it would've been the perfect item for a certain way you decided to build your character. It's happened to me more than once, and a friend I'm playing with will just not stop selling off his old enchanted gear. I've had to go and buy (steal) back his old stuff because a lot of it was either super useful, just not to him (like the gloves of dexterity), immediately useful to my character, or something I thought it was likely we'd want in the future.

Is there something detrimental for me? (im playing a meele rogue with permanent sneak attacks)
    And if you would allow me to ask a 2nd question: So I have used the Grymforge once, then the boss battle appeared and I killed it. After the Battle I can't (for some reason) dont put a 2nd mold into the forge, as of right now the Boss is LAYING on the thing where you put the mold in. Meaning the lever is "blocked" and also I cant pull in lava to melt him or something because the wheel is blocked aswell for some reaosn. The only "button" that works in the forge is the hammer button, that does nothing anymore. Can I fix that? I already re-loaded and short/long rested multiple times

      For stats, I'd start Astarion with 16 Dex and 16 Con. There's really no reason to go 17 because you can respec later to make it 17 if you are adding a +1 to get to 18. Odd ability scores don't give you any modifier bonus.
      After that, you could choose to add points to str for jumping or shoving, but tbh I'd put most into wisdom for saving throws (wisdom is common and is the save against most of the nasty spells) or charisma if you want him to be a dialogue option.

      With melee, you have to beat the AC (armor class) of the target. So if they have a 15 AC, you need to roll a 15 or higher to hit them.
      A spell like Sacred Flame has a Dexterity saving throw. Meaning, the caster doesn't roll dice to hit with it, it will always hit. The target will roll a dexterity saving throw. if they beat your spell casting modifier (whatever it may be) then your sacred flame won't do any damage.
      Spells from support classes that lower saving throws,AC or give you buffs to gain advantage are huge when trying to hit with spells and abilities.

      @@MateusVIII Each spellcasting class has a "Spellcast modifier" stat. For wizards , this is intelligence. Sorcerers and Warlocks are charisma, and Druids are wisdom. Other classes also use one of those stats if they subclass into a spellcaster.
      This stat will add to any attack roll you make with your spells. As a Wizard, if you have 10 intelligence, you will make attack rolls at base stats, while at 20 intelligence you will have a +5 bonus to hit.
      In addition, when a spell uses a saving throw, like Sacred Flame, the higher your spellcast modifier, the higher the enemy needs to roll to avoid it affect.
      Essentially either way, increasing your spellcast stat will benefit your hit chance, but attack rolls have you rolling the attack, while saves have the enemy rolling the defense

    • @Mixels
      @Mixels Před 10 měsíci +1

      The roll isn't the only factor. Like other rolls, there are bonuses that might be applied to attack roles and defense roles. For attack roles, notably the bonus of the associated ability score is one, but applicable feats, weapon proficiencies, and temporary buffs may provide others. When the game calculates chance to hit you see when hovering over an enemy in combat, the percentage value you see factors bonuses automatically. For example, if your character has +8 from weapon specialization, feats, buffs, etc. and is rolling an attack against an enemy with AC of 13 from armor and +2 from DEX, the chance to hit is 20 - ([target total AC] - [enemy total attack bonuses]) / 20, which in the case of this example is 20 - (15 - 8) / 20 or .65 = 65%.
      In the example you gave, the role had already been done. If the total value of the attack role is equal to or greater than the total AC of the target, the attack hits. Period. There is no chance left to it once the roll is done. Or, in other words, the percent chance to hit comes in *before* you roll since chance will decide that factor you get from the dice.

    • @Mixels
      @Mixels Před 10 měsíci

      @@dksannkat141 No, a d20 is used for all attack rolls (except in tabletop where the GM can mix things up if they want and have support from the players). If you have 80 AC and the enemy attacks you, the only way they can possibly hit you is if they've piled enough debuffs on you AND have sky high bonuses to their attack. So, hypothetically (these numbers are imaginary and not obtainable in normal D&D), if they debuffed your AC by 20 and then had a 50 total bonus from attribute bonuses, proficiencies, and buffs, that would bring the difference between attack modifiers (70 total) and your AC (80) to 10. Roll d20 for the attack. If greater than or equal to 10, the attack hits. If less than 10, the attack whiffs. Oh, and one more thing: if an attack rolls a d20 value within their critical attack range (usually natural 20 but the range can be increased by feats or class passives), it hits no matter what and does critical damage (double the number of dice for the damage rolls). Yes, this means that if your AC is high enough and you're fighting a totally incompetent enemy, it's possible to avoid all attacks unless the attacker rolls a 20.

    I wouldn't say that it's a mistake to not respec companions. Even on tactician and letting all the characters be pure, non multiclassed with their original stats and natural class pathing the game isn't incredibly difficult.

    • @swanky147
      @swanky147 Před 8 měsíci +1

      Super disagree here.
      -Just because you can overcome/succeed in spite of a mistake (or something suboptimal) doesn't mean it isn't a mistake.
      -Saying tactician isn't very difficult even with limitations is way too subjective. There are lots of people out there who're playing insane challenge runs (lone wolf, permadeath/no reloads, etc.) but for the vast vast majority of players tactician is still terrifying. A list of "mistakes" is subjective too, but to an enormously lesser degree.
      -Audience matters here too. This is essentially a "top 10 noob tips" video, written for and largely viewed by people who haven't already played years of 5e, Bg3 early access or sunk dozens/hundreds of hours into a campaign. The people for whom your comment is correct are also the people who're a) a minority of viewers/audience and b) know enough to recognize this as generally-applicable tips that can have caveats or nuance for advanced players. Effective communication isn't always the same thing as precise/exhaustive communication. When I'm teaching something I usually give the answer that's correct in 95% of cases and add a "there are a few cases where that isn't true but we'll get into those later" disclaimer.
      Unless you want to for other reasons like immersion or challenge constraints, most of the companions should be respecced to fix their awful stat distributions (and in some cases domain/style/subclass choices) even if you plan to play them as their starter class. And respeccing doesn't even have an opportunity cost in a minmaxy run, because it's already part of an important mechanic you'd want to be doing anyways (vendor attitude purchase/gold & stock refresh). Shadowheart starts with 13 strength, 13 dex, 14 con, 10 int, and 17 wisdom - literally the only stat she has which is at an appropriate number is her cha dump of 8 (and arguably 14 con depending on your build plans). Even if you were gold-limited, the power bump you get from a 100g respec far exceeds any gain you could get by spending that gold on an item. This is all *if* you want to improve your gameplay, which presumably somebody who watches a video like this is looking to do. I'm not going to invade some random player's space and say "hurhur you're doing it wrong," but if you ask me how to be more effective, respeccing your companions at some point in a1 is one of the answers.

      This game is played with save/reload and by reading wikies. If you want immersion, dice rolls will kill it. Object highlighting is f...ed up. Party path finding got problems in some areas and you have to move with each party member individually. Bosses can be easy pickings in one way and pain in a back side in other. Actions cause irreversible effects on playthrough and you can lock out yourself by inadvertently taking wrong action. There are six craft options in forge, but only two craft materials. There is unique item in underdark that can be destroyed by action that is the most sensible thing to do in the area. Lose that item and you are screwed as merchant continues to ask about it and you can't feed it to one party member. @@bobstoner415 I definitely appreciate the DnD DNA even though I've never played it. I'm just saying it's a little jarring for a non-DnD player to see 3d8 when they don't even know 8 sided dice exist. I've already gotten used to it tho lol, but I can see how it might be frustrating to even read what shit does.

    Biggest mistake is buying this below average game. Loaded with bugs still after the 3rd patch. Hidden items that unlock only with specific characters that you have to pick as your own not just in your party. The garbage collection to sell to traders. Spend more time opening crates and reading useless notes for clues to overly obnoxious puzzles than moving forward. This should be on the free download page and I would still say your computer is better off without it.

      from what I heard, for eg; respec shadowheart to whole new class like fighter and you will still see dialogue choices like (sha, cleric)
      it won't break the game but will feel akward

    • @SaturninePlaces
      @SaturninePlaces Před 10 měsíci +1

      Why? They still keep their dialogue responses even if you go as far as completely changing their class. Plus their stats and build choices are... questionable.

    Armor reducing your chance to be hit instead of reducing damage is such an unnintuitive design.
    This also makes combat feel bad because the main source of mitigation is complete misses, not reduced damage.
    The items are also really boring compared to arpg's or pillars of eternity.
    Spellcasters running out of spells feels absurd, and there's too many spell overlaps between classes. These ruin battle and class identity.
    Don't even get me started on concentration and giving many classes mostly concentration spells, which stifles the ability to do anything else.
    Finally, classes are pigeonholed into the same stat each time. This wouldn't be so bad if they weren't tightly couple to skills.
    Dnd systems are really showing their age.

    • @SaturninePlaces
      @SaturninePlaces Před 10 měsíci +14

      I won't say you are explicitly wrong about any of these points, but this really is a case of "different strokes for different folks". All of these complaints you have are due to familiarity with other games and unfamiliarity with this game and it's systems, if you did understand the game you could mitigate all of your issues.
      One thing you did not mention but leads into your other complaints, is that all of the information regarding what you SHOULD do is so convoluted and tough to find hard info for that the game becomes a major turn-off for people new to D&D inspired games. All of this BS seems like it's explicitly in place to dissuade newcomers from interfacing with the roleplay elements when they get hamstrung by the combat and character building. If you believe the excessive glossary and math in the game is simple by any means, tell me what Hex can affect in combat besides damage. So, so many people playing pen-n-paper have the wrong ideas about what mechanics overlap it's insane, which only compounds when BG3 has so much more combat than the tabletop game.

      I think that having it reduce damage would be nice, but keeping it the way it is will feel more natural to 5e players getting the game. It will also make it easier for people getting the game to transition to TTRPG.

      @@whitewolf1028 I was of the same opinion in the beginning, DOS2 was more fun when it comes to combat, but after putting more hours into BG3 and evolving my chars, combat is def more fun in BG3. the DOS2 "endgame" became very repetitive imo, just stunlocking the mobs until they're dead even on hardest difficulty.
