I am a fairly new car camper. I usually just need to stay a night on the way to visit my son in Florida. I have stayed in four different rest areas in four different states. They all had safe lighting and 24-hour restrooms. A couple of them had security on duty. There is noise but not mayhem. I have been very pleased so far.

Most states don't allow overnight parking in rest areas. Connecticut does, and I've used a couple to spend some days in New York City, though I park at a pay lot during the day. I've slept many nights in Maine rest areas where they technically don't allow it, but I've never had a problem.

From a truck driver, thank you. It is so hard to work 14 hours a day and trying to get enough sleep. It's so hard at night to get parking. Even if there's several spots open there's 20 warehouses down the road kicking drivers out after they unload. them. Your so tired, and know your clocks about out and you can legally be in trouble, then you have to back in the tinniest spot with the biggest truck. It's difficult. They don't give us any breaks.

The one or two homeless junkies that would stop by my truck to visit, would always ask permission, and thank me for speaking with them, rather than ignoring them. With local state park campgrounds charging $30+ per night, it always amazed me that people in nice RVs would stay for 1 or more nights, then drive away, leaving bags of trash where they had parked, in a lot with 8 or 10 trash cans they could have used.

FYI, Harvest Host and its affiliates require that guests travel in self-contained RVs. Types of RVs include motorhomes, campervans, travel trailers, fifth-wheel trailers, popup campers and truck campers, so long as they are self-contained. However, NO tents, minivans, cars, or pick-up trucks will be allowed to join as guests.
Important: All camping vehicles must be fully self-contained. Your RV must have an interior toilet and built-in holding tanks or bladders for waste water. Porta-potties that remain inside the vehicle at all times are acceptable, but must be dumped off-site at an appropriate facility. The dumping of gray water on Host properties is prohibited.
So, even if you are self-contained in your minivan or car, you are not allowed to participate.

We operate under federal laws that dictate how long we can drive, so when we look for parking, it is NOT an option. It is very annoying at best to see an RV in a spot I or another truck driver need. RVs have SO MANY OTHER OPTIONS for parking. Do not take the few spaces trucks have.

I read Sam Walton's (founder of Walmart) autobiography years ago, and he talked about how after they first started Walmart, they used to ride around in his RV scouting out spots for new Walmart stores. They would often get kicked out of empty parking lots when they stopped for the night and it made him really mad. So that is the source of the original policy allowing RVs overnight at Walmart. Of course, as you mentioned, new local ordinances that put a crimp on that more recently.

    • @le_th_
      @le_th_ Před 8 měsíci

It's because they've had to put a crimp on it. The drug addicts abuse all of these privileges and ruin it for everyone.
Heck, I work with the homeless in a local shelter and safe parking area and it is *always* the drug addicts that cause problems and get thrown out. The people who are truly homeless because of a series of tragic or traumatic events or health issues are rarely, if ever, a problem.

I have looked into Harvest Hosts, but have decided against it. As someone else mentioned, the vehicle has to be self contained and have some sort of holding tanks. I'm planning on being in likely a Class C, so that's not an issue. For me, paying for the membership, then expected to spend a minimum of $30 to stay. I have heard stories of places giving bad reviews for campers because they didn't spend enough. Well, if it's a place that doesn't have things to purchase that I would use, I wouldn't spend $30 there. I don't drink, so wineries are out, and I'm mobility impaired, so some museums or similar places aren't always handicap accessible. By the time you figure in time, costs, and extra travel, it would be no different than staying in (some) RV parks, and at least there you can have hook-ups. The more I hear about Harvest Hosts from people who aren't sponsored by them, the worse it sounds. Same with Thousand Trails.

the ones located on the outskirts of the cities have fewer problems than the ones right in the city
and the spots where the climate for year round living is easy.
You don't have too many squatters at Walmarts on the highway where it's -22 and snow removal is in progress!

But don't take up more than one spot unless your vehicle does not fit in standard parking space. Also, don't leave any trace when you leave. I live van life 7 months of the year for many many years and I just haven't experienced these problems at Walmart. Even when they have security patrols, if I get the knock, I move to plan B. In the last 2 years of my road trips, that's 14 months, or 420 days and I've gotten the knock twice. This year I'm staying much less at Walmarts because of the noise. Cracker barrel or Lowes are quiet and don't have tweakers hanging around. Disclaimer, I have 2 German shepherds that are very good at their job and a stealthy van that I can fit into any standard parking spot. Sprinter type vans can be completely self contained and still look like any other work van. Single female, driving something that's not stealthy and without a large dog that is chomping at the bit to up open a giant can of whoop ass on a tweaker, yeah you'll have problems. Given most hosts no longer permit same day reservation, I’ve struggled to actually find hosts that will permit me to stay. I have really loved the host locations I’ve visited, but that was when more of them permitted same day reservations. Something I’ve noticed is that where there’s a Walmart, there’s almost always a CrackerBarrel, and for whatever reason, even if the Walmart wont permit overnights, the CB does. Hmmmm? Wal Mart lots are for full time residence living; there are people that have lived there for years. You can buy drugs and sex, and steal food and booze without leaving. Panhandling shoppers provides income for recreation. Residents don't like 'overnighters'
TIP: Always park upwind of full time residents. They are easily identified because they often don't have wheels, tires or axles. Sometimes they don't have doors or windows either.
After a year or three the odor [no sanitation, water, or power] is quite pungent and the swarms of bottleneck flies can be annoying.

So we stay in various Walmart lots nearby. The Walmart managers at Walmart and most of the employees and many of their customers are very kind and show great concern for the safety of their neighbors and customers. Honestly maybe you should stay in some RV parks where the WiFi doesn't work and it costs you &200 a night for full hookup to nothing and you can listen to the soothing sound of tweakers for through to stuff all night. Walmart has everything including life experience and rvrs are supposed to smile and wave and help each other because all RVs break down and Walmart even sells auto parts. God bless WalMart.

Great vlog Robin. I've read some of the jelly comments just for entertainment. Even if you use HH or BW occasionally, we have found it to be invaluable. You just need that one time and that has been our experience. Your gut will tell you when to not stop or to not stay. During an incredible heat wave we had to cancel a BW overnight & opt for a night at Loves RV Stop. It was worth the $$ for our air conditioner, but the only time we had to cancel HH or BW.

I stay at St. Parks, COE ETC. I’d rather spend $30.00 in a nice place with amenities such as hiking trails, lakes etc.
Never stay at Wmart, Cracker Barrel. Ps. I don’t do RV PARKS EITHER

Sprinter Van camper here…. Personally, I love stopping for dinner somewhere gorgeous. I do my evening stuff there. Then I drive to a rest area to sleep. Get up, drive somewhere gorgeous, have my coffee, clean up the van for the day and head to that day’s adventure. I feel pretty stealthy doing it that way. ❤️ loving your channel, Robin. See you out there!

HH has changed their policy & now accept minivan campers under certain conditions. If u email HH, they will tell u minivans with water, with containers for gray water, and a portapotty are now accepted. They are in the process of updating their online info to state so.

Thanks for your app recommendations, Robin. It appears Campers Card and Camp Scanner are Apple apps. Do you know of an equivalent app for Android phones? Thanks!

Never had a problem parking tho we are pretty stealth. We follow arrive late leave early. I thought you could park at Walmart for 8 hours before you had to leave. We would absolutely leave if told but haven’t had to so far. Once when in Colorado there was absolutely no place to park it was dark and we were exhausted we parked at a hospital. Talk about freaked out our son who was following us on his find my app started texting us very worried we were at a hospital!! We have been members of HH and rarely use them cause hosts don’t get back to you.

I have had NO problem with a Cracker Barrel & I love their food too! Had to stay one night at a True Value Store but you have to be gone by 7am!! I'm trying to work it out to open my land for Nomads too!! Sure could use some help, being an Old Blind Guy!! It will have to be a NO SMOKING Retreat because of the dry conditions here and no water, yet!! Please STOP WITH THE 👍 THUMBS UP'ers!! I need HELP, NOT WISHFUL THINKERS!!!

I-overlander is 100% free, and is updated by other RVers. It includes Walmarts, rest areas, some truck stops and many OTHER sites. No annual or any other fees.

As a truck driver, I used to hear other truckers complain about RVers taking up parking spots in truck stops. As I heard one trucker say on the CB, “They don’t let truckers stay at campgrounds, why should they let RVers stay at truck stops.”
For the past seven plus years, I’ve been on my trucking company’s Walmart dedicated account. I deliver to Walmart and Sam’s Clubs in Minnesota and the surrounding states. Most of the rural Walmarts let trucks and RVs park overnight. Some of the ones around the Twin Cities can be more challenging. Sioux Falls is not friendly for overnight parking. Mostly because of city law.
Trucker Path is a good app. I use the free version. But I rarely use it, unless I have to travel outside of my operating area.

You slipped in a mention of Bass Pro Shops and Cabella's. Do they allow RV parking? I did not know that. Great video. I saved the link. I plan on retiring next year, buy a small RV and travel with my dog. I love your channel and found it just before I drive 8000 miles with my pup last month on a two week vacation. I decided traveling in a small sedan is not practical lol. Keep going! I love your enthusiasm and sunny outlook.

Im living this nightmare right now! I'm headed north on 65 from Kentucky into Indiana my phone kept alerting TOLL as I crossed into Indiana. I didnt see any toll both. I stopped at the first rest area, and spoke with the lady attendant who told me, your going to get the bill in the mail. And if you ignore it, your driver's license will be locked up till the toll is paid in full. This is crap, i didnt see any signage alerting to TOLL AHEAD. Now i have to baby sit my P.O. BOX. Its just the nerve of it all!!!!!
Avoid SR 65 Indiana/Kentucky line area!!!!
I remember that lady saying, they have your license plate!!! Im full-time in my class c.
Arms crossed, tapping foot, waiting patiently !!!

Harvest host is $70 on sale and you have to spend gas to find another...... and whatever you purchase at the harvest host location. At $1,000 a month total income, not happening.

We just had a shooting at a Walmart in Spokane, an officer had to shoot someone, they evacuated the store. The police and fire dept were there. I guess this has been happening all over America. So sad, whats wrong with people?

I remember when i was on my first long haul road trip by myself. I had to stop and sleep in Albuquerque. I heard Walmart was a good place to stay the night but when i got there it was too sketchy for me. I tried a truck stop inside the city, but the attendant warned me against it since even he didn't trust it. I ended up sleeping at a truck stop outside the city which was really nice the people were friendly and i felt safe sleeping in my car.
