They are as close to homeless as you can get...and still have something over their head....it’s good they have figured out a way, with the help of people like Bob, to do it somewhat safely and know where to go and what resourses are out there

Hey I have learned so much from Bob. But face it: he is UNAPOLOGETICALLY the guy in a van down by the river. He was driven to van life because of dire circumstances. Thank God! Because he has completely changed the face of the nomad demographic: proving that if you are down to nearly nothing, you can find a POSITIVE way to live a quality life and live within your means.
I know a lot of people who are days/weeks from being in the streets, or those 'forced' to live in their vehicles. I refer them straight to Bob's videos and tell them: "it's not necessarily a bad thing. With a change of mindset you can actually live in incredible life out of your vehicle!!"

You are right Robin. When I spoke with an insurance person, a nurse who is doing supplemental insurance now for retirees, about being sure my medicare supplemental ins and drug coverage was good anywhere in US if I full time RVing. Her first question: But where is your house? I sold it but I will have a physical address to use and a mailing service. She cut the conversation short with "You aren't going to pay taxes and vote?" Automatically assuming bum status avoiding taxes. I said NO I will be paying all my taxes and voting. I am a retired Nurse Practitioner. But thank you. You are not the person I need to speak with! This person was clueless and I agree about TV interview. Loved Bob in the interview but was disappointed in that coverage. You see it heading in a negative direction. My Unity RV finally coming in August. So no, I will have a very nice home, uninformed insurance lady. As I found out my health coverage is good and I have my RV insurance lined up with Nationwide, willing to cover me as full-time RVer where others were not.

Great to know there are insurance carriers out there that support the RV life. There is another CZcamsr named Rusty who explains what the options are for older folks that have been full time RV’ers and want to stay in one place. There is mobility and food delivery assistance, which is awesome. So, sticks and bricks are completely overrated.

Exactly! THIS is why the stigma effects us. It doesn't "hurt our feelings" because, who cares about that? It hurts our ability to bank, get insurance, register, etc. Plus, it gives the regular populous the idea they should fear us or ban us.

@@johnmal5975 yeah I don't think it was a lack of truth, what they represented is out there. The story just didn't show all of what is out there. The thing about getting a good story is you have to first educate yourself enough on the subject to even know what questions to ask. Bob is well know for representing the down and out who are on disability and small Social Security payments, so of course that became an obvious focus and the Instagram factor became the other. YUP! I'm a 62 yr old female who fits your stated demographic. Yes I lost my job but I was in no way destitute as a result of it. I had a home with 22 yrs of equity in it and had planned to get an rv 3 yrs from now when it was paid off and go fulltime. My timeline just got bumped up. I knew that even when I retired (3 yrs from now) there was no way I could maintain the house on my small pension and social security w/o continuing to work. There were many other economic factors in my area that went into my decision. The stars were not only aligning... THEY SPELLED OUT - SELL NOW! So I am fortunate to have sold my house and have no debt and live off a small pension till my SS kicks in at full benefits. I'm also extremely fortunate to be HEALTHY! So maybe I am a mixed bag of" Glamping down by the river," but even with history making storms and rainfall since I started in March, I am finding my way and enjoying it. All journalists put their " spin" on stories now instead of just presenting the facts and letting the viewer make up their own mind. Glad to see you call them out on it.

They made it sound like those who live in RVs are dangerous fire bugs and "we need to protect our communities from these dangerous people!" I would sit there and fume as I thought about the house fires that were reported on, by the same network, who would offer their condolences and compassion for the unfortunate souls who lost their homes, belongings, and sometimes loved ones. It left viewers with the idea, "Those who have house fires aren't dangerous and deserve our respect and compassion. Those who have RV fires are lowlifes who endanger themselves and our communities and should be punished." Oh yeah, your words couldn't have come a better time. THANK YOU

No real friends to so anything with them. Strange feeling. No family or close ppl. Ones i had. Stole from me or ripped me off. Got things ove got to straighten out. From lack of being at an empty house. Boondocking in a van. Be about the same as living in a semi. Without the trlr. Lots of places I've seen. But no time to stop and look around. Use to see rvs in truck stops. They had no clue where to go. I'd give them ideas. Couldn't believe theyd stay in a noisy truck stop. Guess I will see what happens this year. Last winter was brutal. Others ripped me off on my sleds and fish house. So guess I don't need to be here.

Didn't boondock but lived a wonderful fulfilling life and absolutely loved it. We stopped to help our kids with some things and not sure if we will go back on the road. We have a funny saying in our family. When someone offers someone something and they refuse, we say "Great! more for me!" It is all about perspective. Some people would not live in a big city no matter that they have theaters, museums, clubs, shops, diversity and are exciting. Some people would not live in some small village no matter that they have peace, tranquility, community togetherness and a sense of tradition. It is possible to appreciate all kinds of life without disparaging any of them. Frankly, I am getting sick of folks putting down other lifestyles like their own is the end all be all for everyone. Happiness is the right of everyone and their choice how to obtain it, well that is sacrosanct. Saying anything else just makes them sound rather simpleminded. So hey, they don't like living in a van or whatever, then great, more for me. (EDIT: Oh and FYI, the US was a nation of nomads before it was settlers, just saying. That Mayflower didn't just get up and walk itself over, nor did the Native Americans stick and brick either.)

I really appreciate this video. I think you hit the nail on the head. Everybody has a different goal and dream. Everybody has a different living situation, and those situations change as we go through life. Society would love to put us all in a box but it doesn't work that way. I like to think of life as a continuum that changes constantly. I grew up in a barn, yes, a real barn that was "sort of" converted into a house.....not really, lol. My wife grew up in a chicken shack. We now both live in a doublewide on 10 acres, our dream property. We always dreamed of building a stick built home because that's what society tells us to do. That home will cost an additional $300,000 to build, which makes me sick to my stomach and robs my joy for life. I love the idea of getting back to my roots and building a tiny home in the back of our 36x48 pole barn. Not because we can't afford the big home but because, like you said, "we choose to do it", and like Bob says, "it's freedom vs. comfort". Watching videos like yours and seeing you live in an rv full time makes me ask, "Why can't I, with a family of 4, live comfortably in something 1200 square feet in the back of a shop and actually be able to afford it and feel good about it?" The answer is that there is nothing holding me back except for my fear of what society will think. That's it! thanks for your inspiration. PS: I'd love to do the van life thing but I think my wife would kill me while having 2 kids tagging along, lol.

Brilliant…thank you so much! I’m a 72 year old solo female nomad. Once a week I visit my sister for dinner and a movie. Since I prefer not to drive at night I stay where I park, at the end of her dead end street, away from the apartment building. One morning I awoke to a note on my windshield…Go back to the downtown Eastside Junkie! Amen. I've been planning on going full-time for over two years. As of today, I've been full-time for just three weeks in an old Ford van I just love. I'm self employed and have been for over a decade. I would have made more money had I stayed in my sticks & bricks home as much of my work requires resources that simply aren't mobile. I didn't make this decision out of desperation. I worked tirelessly to get to a place where I can do this, including several test trips to be sure I was adequately prepared. I still work, I still pay taxes, I still have an LLC., etc. but I'm somehow "less" of a person because this is what I chose? Nope.
As a marketing professional, I'm free to help those who need it the most without having to focus so much on what monetary rewards I receive. In reality all I did was swap long term stressors with short term stressors. I have no debt, want for nothing, and looking forward to the rewards this next year will bring. I'm far from broken.
For me, the word "consumer" has become somewhat pejorative. I don't exist to consume, rather, I want to create, mentor, and encourage others who simply seek joy. Thanks so much for being an advocate. The role suits you well. Oh, and enjoy Oregon! That's where my journey began :) Be well.

Another excellent journalistic post by you. I saw the CBS show and did not catch those inferences or maybe I didn't want to hear them subconsciously. You are right on track. I traveled 5 months across country, going to the WRTR, RTR and many other get togethers. I met so many people that were not what I was used too, which was the working American rushing around. I found that the people living in all their different rigs for different reasons due to different circumstances were such great people. It was eye opening and enlightening. Back home now, I find I am constantly defending nomads and having to explain what it is all about and how great so many people are. When the public hear someone is living in a car or a van or RV, they automatically think of those people shown in the newscasts of people living in the streets in Los Angeles, San Francisco and other places. Wouldn't it be wonderful if someone like you put together a documentary showing what this video was saying, getting the real story out there. I think if anyone can do it, you can.

The majority of people that criticize the nomad community is because they are jealous or cannot understand how people can be free of possessions and consumerism. Funny how echoes of the past, come back to haunt us. 35 years ago, when I was thinking of coming out as a gay man, I looked to the media, and all I saw was the extremes. Either the leather kink/drag or the flaming / drag queen types. But no one was showing the middle, the regular guy loved by his family and friends and working hard for what he has. But, one day, I said hell with it, I need to be happy, 'cause I was near suicidal with despair. Here I am 35 years later, happily married with two great kids. I got everything I never knew I wanted....
A few weeks ago, my hubby said, this county stinks, let's look into doing the Nomad life. (My words not his exactly). So I started looking into it, and asking my friends and family their thoughts. The overall consensus and mainstream information I got, was it's a path for the desperate or the elite. Only because I am a real web miner for information before I make any big decision, I found people like you, and the couple with @fateunbound that I knew this was a path for us. I'm just over the mid-century hump, and I've seen so little of this country it makes me sick to think, my life could end and I've experienced so little. BTW, I'm a cancer survivor x4, have had a silent heart attack and a TIA. my doctor's tell me I'm in better shape now than I've been most of my life, and when I told them what we wanted to do, they gave me great encouragement, and started a plan so I can maintain my health care with them. So when the naysayers start their lectures I realize, they are jealous or afraid, all they've known all their lives is putting down roots, the idea of being a human tumbleweed terrifies them. So now, I feel sorry for them. So from the bottom of my heart, thank you from me and mine for telling your Truth, and getting the message out there. There is room for every lifestyle you just have to make it yours. Blessed be!

Well said Robin. My wife and I are going on two years now as full timers. In our previous life, I'd been at my job 17 years and was beyond burned out. My wife worked for the same medical center and was 10 years in and just as burned out. In addition we'd both suffered some life changing medical issues and found that our house had become just a place to exist in. We hated it and what our lives had become. We decided to move to Northwestern FL so she could teach and I could retire. In that process I suggested buying a motorhome instead of a house or renting a dwelling. I'd been on one camping trip in my life back in '76 and hated it. While she used to camp a lot with a girlfriend, neither of us had ever owned or even thought about owning an RV. We sold everything, packed some stuff into a truck and headed to FL, not even having an RV when starting out didn't deter us. Several weeks later we found a Class A we fell in love with and shortly thereafter, discovered workamping. We absolutely love our life now and wouldn't EVER think of going back to what most would consider a "normal life".
