it should also be mentioned that, at of the clips they chose to show, not only did Mara sing it the best, but she acted the hell out of it and made it look easy. that's what won her the part
Oh come on... There must have been over 1000 women who could sing this well. They choose these clips to make Mara look better. It's like asking an great alto to sing the part of Mimi. She will fuck up.
downtown82 you have no idea! There have not been 15 women in the history of broadway that could even make Maggie memorable! Why do you think Kay Cole’s name is still remembered?
COULD YOU IMAGINE BEING ONE OF THOSE POOR GIRLS WHOSE ONLY PART IN THE MOVIE DOC WAS GOING COMPLETLEY OFF KEY, YIKES , FEEL SO BAD FOR THEM , YOU'D NEVER LIVE IT DOWN WOULD YOU
Knowing how professional casting works, sometimes they do a dance call and then ask for people to sing afterwards. Mara is classically trained and definetly had a leg up because she's a beautiful dancer and vocalist long trained vocalist. I come back to watch this video all the time because it literally makes me stop breathing sometimes. She's truly such an amazing performer.
Oh guys. All these are good vocalists. This song is so high and not easy to sing. I got a call back for this role recently and am preparing for it. Bless my neighbors I need to make them cookies my walls are paper thin. That last note is out of my belting range but I was asked to sing it at the audition and still got called back for it even though I felt crazy. All that to say, most of the time, you sing what you're asked to sing and even if you know it might not sound great, you try it because you never know. Anyway, that's part of it. Entertainers do as we're told or don't work. All of these ladies are probably amazing vocalists within their ranges.
we watched Every Little Step in our theatre class last year, and I can vividly remember everyone clapping and cheering at Mara's absolute bliss in her singing. She is truly talented
My hats off to all of you that work so hard to entertain all of of us at the theater . What it takes to be on stage most of us will never know . These clips give us a glimpse of the journey one must endure to be on stage in a Broadway production . Thanks for your dedication
Revisiting this in honour of Bob Avian’s passing today, Rest In Peace to a Broadway legend. As well: not only does Mara nail the ending, but her phrasing is also gorgeous - at the very top she sings ‘at the ballet / raise your arms and someone’s always there’ all in one breath. Talk about support and power.
It's interesting in this documentary to see how many people that originally got cut actually went on to replace people during the run of the show. Melissa Lone replaced Davi as Maggie & Michelle Aravena understudied the role(along with others) for her entire time with the show.
When a vocie sits, it sits ! she had to be the one: her face, her expression, her everything ! even if you do not wanna cry, at the moment that she starts, we cry automatically ! Really pretty 🙂
I know they mostly showed the flops besides Mara but what was wrong with the girl in the grey sweater? (aka the second girl they show.) She didn’t seem bad. But then again we didn’t actually see the whole thing so.
That first 0:58 “balleeeeeet” from Mara hasn’t been matched, even by Mara. Something about the way she said it there was different and I love it. I think it’s her vibrato. It sounded so remarkable there.
He gives them the key at the beginning. “You don’t have to scream it” They were all pushing too hard and screaming through it. None of them had anywhere to go for the crescendo and they weren’t able get there. It’s not an uncommon mistake when singing.
I love watching the "judges" ' reactions, they are hilarious! "Not impressed" is the best! And when Mara is singing they are like "God has heard our prayers!"
Their job is to cast, not be their best friend. It's pretty rude of those girls to audition when they knew they couldn't hit that note without sounding like a screaming jackal.
Lexi Ryan They didn’t know they’d be singing then I believe, which is why they have music as someone mentioned. I think the point was it’s one thing to just send them out quickly and forget it, but another outright wince.
People say “good girl” when it’s an older experienced person speaking to a younger less experienced person as a way of saying “good job”. I’ve had people say that to me. It isn’t rude or condescending it’s sweet and shows you truly think that person did well by referring to them in such a personal way.
He wasn't being intentionally condescending, he was complimenting/encouraging her. Aside from "good girl" being an idiom (no one says "good woman!" in that context), it's also just part of dance lingo. There's a long, *long* tradition of male and female dancers, from musicals to ballet, being called "boys" and "girls." Heck, we hear it throughout "A Chorus Line" whenever the character Zach (the choreographer) and Larry (his assistant) address the dancers to separate the groups. Especially in the opening number during the choreo auditions. Anyhoo, Bob Avian, the director who said this, co-choreographed the original production, and is just used to that dance world culture.
it should also be mentioned that, at of the clips they chose to show, not only did Mara sing it the best, but she acted the hell out of it and made it look easy. that's what won her the part
YES!!
A difficult piece indeed

@@scryingt which is why she can still sing today and doesn't have vocal damage
It's not easy, it's hard. But it's the person who makes it look effortless who gets the role.
There was a definite look of relief on that mans face when she got the note at the end of a long days auditions!
that girl who says “that’s not easy” sounded just like judy garland when she said that!
OK YES! So glad this comment is here. I couldn't shake the resemblance.
I wonder if she got understudy because she sounded like Mari!
I knew she reminded me of someone!!! Love Judy 😍
That look at 1:23 always makes me feel happy because you can see in his face "We found her"
COULD YOU IMAGINE BEING ONE OF THOSE POOR GIRLS WHOSE ONLY PART IN THE MOVIE DOC WAS GOING COMPLETLEY OFF KEY, YIKES , FEEL SO BAD FOR THEM , YOU'D NEVER LIVE IT DOWN WOULD YOU
THEY WERE SO PETTY PUTTING THEM IN 😂😂😂

AmaindeJD very well said...and SO true!
How did the callback go?
AmaindeJD no they aren’t all using technique
not everyone who auditioned was a skilled singer. It’s a tough song, but I am surprised that a lot of them were brought in.
how did the callback go?
@ 1:24 she looks like something straight out of the golden age!
there were probably tons of other girls that sang it just as well, they just showed the flops lol
One of the hardest notes in all of musical theater and Mara pulled it off, very well done.
Mara’s tone and vibrato.... yes.
Dear lord, that was a lot of screaming, then Mara comes in, nails it, and walks out like "Yeah, I got that role".
I'd say she walks out feeling exhilarated ... but she doesn't look smug.
She looks confident, I'd say
Tbh if he had said good girl to me I'd have been like "fuck yes"
man, i feel bad for any of those women who went back to watch it and saw that they were used in the bad audition segment
we watched Every Little Step in our theatre class last year, and I can vividly remember everyone clapping and cheering at Mara's absolute bliss in her singing. She is truly talented
Nikki Rikki EVERY LITTLE STEP IS THE BESTTTTT
She looks almost happy to be singing that insanely difficult note, love it!
A couple of the other girls actually hit the note well, but they were intercut with people who didn't
I love how Mara Davi exits her audition for Maggie like "Yup, got it!"

This was so well edited I love all those overlapping screams 😂
The last girl was stunning
0:18 girl...your neck
"you don't have to scream it, you know"
Plus her vibrato was coming from her jaw, a MAJOR sign of tension😬
It’s so clear that Mara was the right person for the job.
Mara was singing from the heart that's why it sounded so 😍
Yep. She nailed that audition. 👏🏼
It's interesting in this documentary to see how many people that originally got cut actually went on to replace people during the run of the show. Melissa Lone replaced Davi as Maggie & Michelle Aravena understudied the role(along with others) for her entire time with the show.
i cant imagine anyone else doing this role as well as mara davi
Amen.
When she sang the highest note the one guy looks at the other one like "That‘s it! Right there! That‘s it!" and he is so damn right!!!
Drew Barrymore's beautiful rendition of "At the Ballet" won the producers hearts lol
HAHAHAHAHA
Everyone made me cringe but Mara
I still can’t believe how incredible it sounds when she does it
Gotta hand it to Kay Cole! She hit that note EVERY time!
When a vocie sits, it sits ! she had to be the one: her face, her expression, her everything ! even if you do not wanna cry, at the moment that she starts, we cry automatically ! Really pretty 🙂

Good Girl Mara
that crescendo has been the bane of my existence for years because I can’t hit it no matter what I do
That first 0:58 “balleeeeeet” from Mara hasn’t been matched, even by Mara.
Something about the way she said it there was different and I love it. I think it’s her vibrato. It sounded so remarkable there.
I did ACL with one of those girls. She played Maggie. (OK, it was 1994)
YAAASSSS! Sing it Mara!!!!
It's nice to know, it was painful to see them getting cut.
He gives them the key at the beginning. “You don’t have to scream it” They were all pushing too hard and screaming through it. None of them had anywhere to go for the crescendo and they weren’t able get there. It’s not an uncommon mistake when singing.
YES YES YES!!!!!
I love watching the "judges" ' reactions, they are hilarious! "Not impressed" is the best! And when Mara is singing they are like "God has heard our prayers!"
I hope Mara is doing amazing today
Wait till Natalie Livingston from the Hart School plays Maggie on Broadway! Her’s will be a memorable performance, too
did the last girl win?
Yes!!
It’s an E5...
Abie Faz and?
@@abe5707 And its not that hard hahahaha
But Its the dynamics, vibrato, placement, and holding the note thats hard
@@theoperatripleaxel5417 how about you do it, then? dumb bitch
@@theoperatripleaxel5417 Yes, yes it is that hard.
Shut up about vocal performances if you have no clue or experience of what it's like.
That's pretty rude of the directors to make those faces

That's the industry for you
pls is the first one michelle kittrell
A whole lot of screaming 😂
Mara's voice reminds me Linzi Hateley 😍 I dont know why
the one in the orange leotard....
0:54
Oof when the other women were straining and using to much from muscle when trying to project it 😭😭😖 my throat hurts now from hearing them.
at 0:45 is that melissa benoist?? haha
No
belting high and clear has to be very difficult.
what’s the woman’s name in second 0:09 ??? i feel like i’ve seen her before
i think that's carrie st louis!
Pretty show they only showed the worst people compared to Mara, probably a lot more girls that auditioned had more talent.
There’s something incredibly bizarre watching people audition for Chorus Line
But the “good girl” comment was a flop in itself 😂
Should have said “ good job!”
How odd !
Out key bug time
Lol
0:39 Kristen Bell?
@1:29 "Good girl..." I'm sorry who says 'good girl'? Disgraceful.
It sounds kind of condescending but also kinda like he's describing her? like "good girl" as in she's good in this role, or something
Disagree. Great moment. She was thrilled to get that response.
