- Abandoned Kmart - Elkview, WV. Closed in December 2019. Rumor had it that Rural King would move into this spot but years alter, there has been no activity here aside from all the lights being turned on inside.

This KMart had a Little Ceasars, located inside to the right when you show the registers. That store was always so clean!
I was shopping in there once when a giant bag of diapers fell off a high shelf and hit me on the shoulder. It hurt!! I filled a report with the manager just in case I had problems with my shoulder later. We sat in that little Caesar’s while he took the report.
In Australia, Kmart is still really big. They have huge, pristine, stores that are damn near the size of a small malls.

Kmart Australia was a joint venture between Kmart America and Coles. Kmart America stopped investing in Coles in 1994 (this left Kmart Aus. in Coles's hands). Coles was bought by Wesfarmers in 2007.@@shocfacter

There's even one between WV and Kentucky in the middle of no where! I saw 2 of them!

There are 2 close by. One in Kanawha City Wv and one in Elkview Wv.
I live in Puerto Rico and the Big K-Mart near me closed in like 2020 or 2021, and now they turned it into a Burlington store. So it's not abandoned.
I miss going to that K-Mart as a kid with my parents and siblings and also neighborhood friends. So many beautiful memories made there. I loved eating pizza and nachos in there and sitting at the dinner place, which was kinda big for a K-Mart. This K-Mart was connected to a mall. The other entrance is inside the mall. There's also a big movie theater in front of the former K-Mart store.
God, how I miss those days! 90s and early to mid 00s. 🥹

Great video. Also fast fact there was a flood in plaza in 2016 Kmart was closed for 15 months reopened in 2017 to just close 2 years later
I came here to say this. Wasn’t there an issue with the owner of the property not wanting to replace a bridge to get to the shopping center? All those stores were closed for a long time because of it. It’s good to see the others are doing well now.

You were just a short drive away from 2 other empty Kmarts! A third one is now a UHaul also
I miss this, KMart. I grew up shopping there and when I became a parent , I shopped there with my daughter. She is still able to wear the coat she bought there while in grade school. Thanks for showing.
I worked for Sears for a few years before they closed down . Sears was running on fumes and wasn't investing in the stores anymore and our hardware for hanging signs and products for sale were damaged and broken.
They sent me and a couple of other employees to a Kmart that recently closed to gather items that we could use in our store .
It was unsettling and I met a gentleman that worked for that Kmart for years and it was his last week of employment . It was sad to see such a big store completely empty and depressed.
I miss the old days.

If you are near Charleston again, there is a recently abandoned McDonald’s that was built in a retro theme with the giant golden arches through the roof on either side.
Who ever owned the building is paying the electricity. Kmart for the most part leased the buildings.

I also wonder who's paying the electric on these abandoned Kmarts. The one here in Somerset Ky that closed November 30,2019 still has all of its lights ablaze .
Awhile back I saw a lady from Australia do a CZcams video on the kmarts down in Australia and she said down there target and Kmart were in the process of merging together down there

I lived there when it opened. I was 5 and it was incredible! They really screwed the town when they closed it.
The end where the "tent" was is where they used to have the garden stuff at. Beautiful flowers and fruit trees with water fountains for sale. And when you walked in side as soon as you did, there would be girls children clothes on your right, and a huge rows of buggy's on the left against the main service desk. Then you turned to your right and there was a glass kiosk desk where you seen displays of pretty sparkly jewelry and perfumes for sale. Then on down from that and the children's clothes was women's, then down and left turn from that was men's clothes , fitting rooms, and the photography room, and then walking from that was the outdoor sports section, and then turn the corner left, was the electronics, which diminished over time. Then the art and books stuff, and kitchen and house stuff mixed in the isles. Then turn the corner to go back towards the front of the store, and there would be toys and puzzles, and such, then on past that the area for the garden center right next to the pharmacy,shampoo and medicine section, you go through self opening doors, and smell the nostalgic smell of rubber and hoses and plants water fountains and soil and fertilizer and hear the sounds of the birds tweeting as well has the fresh air that flew in from the side doors that were always opened in the summer and the spring. Then on the way out of the garden center re-entering the main store, you walk down the isle towards the checkouts, where they had the booths for checkouts, and then at the end of it a place to grab a nice warm cooked hotdog and a icee sushi, or popcorn and soda, then later on in the years they closed, then years later on they opened up a little Caesars pizza, which wasn't very tasty at all and stank smelled very badly. Those were the last years of Kmarts opening. after the flood of 2016, Kmarts small sales hit damaging lows that couldn't regain strength, they were listed 59th in the states as best store and eventually closed. It's one of the saddest story's of elkview Kmart. I miss elkview Kmart. It was my favorite store. The. End. .
And the shoes were right across the electronics, right between the electronics and the women's underclothes and socks 🧦.
@@beewhite1667 I believe the person who posted the video deleted my comment before this one's where I told everyone that this building won't be available for change until sometime in or after 2024, because that is when the lease is ready for buying.
I miss K-Marts so much too! Grew up going to them since I was a toddler. Always with my parents and siblings, and sometimes with neighborhood friends. The K-Mart near me is connected to the mall, so it also had an entrance inside the mall. That K-Mart closed in like 2020 or 2021 and now it's a Burlington store.
Walmarts never give me that good & nostalgia feeling that the K-Marts give me. 🥹❤

I miss Kmart so much! Here in Lancaster, Ohio, our Kmart closed in 2016, and was quickly demolished to build a new Kroger.

Good evening Wallie. I haven't seen your videos in a while but I'm glad you're still making videos of your cross country adventure. I find it interesting that KMart still has modern day ruins all over the US, but apparently the brand is still used elsewhere in the world. Also I agree with you about the lights still being on. Who would be paying for electricity for an abandoned building.
Anyways, I have you're having a great Winter Break & I look forward to watching as many videos as possible from your channel that you uploaded over the past 3 months (especially now that I have time to do that).

It was a pretty decent store compared to Walmart
Thing is though with WV according to the recent US Census the state has an 18% poverty rate which is one of the highest in the nation right behind Louisiana at 18.6%, and Mississippi at 19.1%, so unless this place is getting a lot of traffic daily, then I can't see that store being repurposed for anything more than maybe an Ollie's in the future, and even that's a stretch if they would use all that space since the 2 in my area here on the SC/GA border don't do garden centers.
I'm from WV and my husband is from this area and that area does get alot of traffic. It's right off the interstate. Just cause WV is a poorer state doesn’t mean anything. People have to shop and there's poor people here but there's rich people here too who can afford to buy this and repurpose this. There's 3 Kmarts that I know of in this area that are closed down but they are asking too much for the price so business owners are passing on these Kmart locations.

@@Alex.CulkinI think they keep the lights on to deter vandals and squatters from breaking and entering and they probably keep it heated and cooled as well. Temperature controlled buildings won't deteriorate as fast.

I live two minutes away, wish they would do something with the building. It was the only retail store we had it closed about 3 years ago got a $1000 worth of fireworks for $100 lasted years and other things
It looks like another store move right in.
And down the road from Elkview Kmart you find at North Charleston and St. Albans vacant Kmarts too. Loved Kmart.

I always stopped here when leaving Charleston to head back to Bridgeport. It was always a nice store. That plaza and the area went through a lot and still dealing with the aftermath of the flood.

I'm from this area. The owner jacked the rent up and no one else wants to pay it. Oh and the other old Kmarts are Uhaul now. I miss that store.

There used to be a Bon Evans where Taco Belk is now. Bob Evans closed during Covid. La Quinta Inn used to be a Country Inn. Kroger was extensively renovated after the flood. A Ponderosa was built next to the Exxon and didn’t last long. It became a Mexican place and closed after a whole.

There is an abandoned Kmart here in Huntington Indiana. Still vacant along with an abandoned Burger King NOT in the same parking lot. The Kmart closed in 2014 and nothing has ever moved into it. The Burger King closed a couple years ago. But another good video!! Love the content!!

Part of our Kmart (PA) became an ocean state job lot. One side (garden center) is gonna be a harbor freight and the other side (main entrance) gonna be a planet fitness.

When I worked at KMart back in the late ‘70’s early 80’s, the manager once told us at a company meeting, when an employee asked about price checking Wal-Mart items, he said KMart is not worried about Wal-Mart, they’re just a Ma and Pa store. Little did they know.

It weird to see a KMart store not having an outside open dock. If the drains weren’t kept clean, the dock area would flood. Depending how flooded it was, most drivers would just parked along the dock and unload from there. Fun times. 😂

I live in Roane County about 45 minutes from Elkview I use to shop there often I miss it. Elkview has went down hill.
the shop owners pay the bills. Kmart is still leasing that building. the same people owned the summeresville shops also hence the address on the van. the house in the back was where the groundskeeper lived.
I live near this kmart and what he called the customer service desk was actually Little Caesars. That was actually one of the only places close to where I live to get clothes at. There have been rumors about what the next store will be. Walmart, tractor supply, rural king but nothing yet! 😢

This is our KMart and we keep hearing that another business is moving into that building but they never have. The owner supposedly lives in Miami and is absentee owner and obviously must be using it as a tax write off. The people of Elkview would love to see a new store go in!
Yeah the store won't be able to be bought until after 2024 starts because of the lease.
But everytime I post a link to the lease broker to give more info about it because the broker has a brochure, the author of the video deleted my comment.
