- With a powerful closing kick she has never failed to deliver, Zenyatta remained perfect, running her way into history with a thrilling victory over St Trinians and four others in the $250,000 Vanity Handicap on Sunday at Hollywood Park.
The win was the 17th in a row for the 6-year-old daughter of Street Cry and the Kris S. mare Vertingineux, enabling her to surpass Cigar, Citation and Mister Frisky for the longest win streak by a modern day thoroughbred in races not restricted to state breds.
She also became the first three time winner of the Vanity, a Grade 1 which was run for the 69th time Sunday.
Owned by Jerry and Ann Moss and trained by John Shirreffs, who has won the Vanity a record five times, Zenyatta, the 1-2 favorite, was able to overtake a gallant St Trinians in the closing yards. The half-length win, accomplished in 1:49.01 for the 1 1/8 miles, increased Zenyatta's earnings to $6,074,580.
Spotting the runner-up nine pounds as she carried the same 129 she did in last year's Vanity, Zenyatta trailed for more than two-thirds of the race, came widest of all into the stretch, then had to run down St Trinians, who had gotten the jump on the two-time older female champion.
With about a sixteenth of a mile to go, it appeared Zenyatta's streak could be in jeopardy, but she was able to do what she's always done since beginning her career with a maiden victory at Hollywood Park on Nov. 22, 2007. She is 7-for-7 at the track she calls home. - Sport
I can watch Zenyatta's races over and over again, and still get the same exhilarating chill when she comes down the stretch as when I first watched it.
Kudos to St. Trinians!!! She gave the legendary Zen the race of a lifetime....and with a kooky running style. and half her size. Love you also Trin! You were great too!!!
Still makes me cry every time I watch.
No horse wins races like Zenyatta / no man calls races like Vic Stauffer!
I'm a big british racing fan, we currently have frankel, so I always think we have the best horses but my god that zenyatta is something else, what a horse
This just puts a HUGE smile on my face.😎 The announcer makes this even better!
I think he ruins the race.
Her record speaks for itself. Without question, Zenyatta shares the stage with Secretariat, Sea Biscuit, Man-O-War.
I totally agree!!!! What a lady!!!!
Phar Lap? 😁
She's top 5
Definitely won the public’s heart
Man, this replay still gives me chills
I was at this race. Took me a few minutes to catch my breath afterwards.
Could your breath beat
Zenyatta?
Zenyatta the LEGEND! In 100 years people are gonna still be talking about the Queen
What can you say about that? There are no words. Zenyatta is truly one of a kind, what a heart
in my life i know i will never hear a better race called. thanks vic john maganaro
I knew she would get there, but the fun of watching her was that she usually made you crazy until she actually reached the wire! She was great fun to watch, from the prancing in the post parade to the way she looked & acted in the Winner's Circle... she just got it! Love her!
greatest race call I'ver ever heard!!! I can't stop watching this video LOVE ZENYATTA!!!
Lol I think the announcer is quite the fan of Zenyatta! haha. I think i just fell in love with this horse in less than 5 hours! She's just so amazing. Her tactic is just BRILLIANT!! Starting as the underdog then popping out of nowhere to take the prize!
What a race!!! The call was awesome!!! Who are the 29 meatheads that gave it a thumbs down ???
BEST CALL EVER!!
It was amazing
Yaas
Period
Wow! I loved the race but the call was what made this video Epic!
Great race call!! "Stamp this day in your minds and hearts!!"
What's impressive about this race is when St. Trinian's spins out of the far turn and mashes the accelerator to the floorboard. If you look closely, Martin Garcia sits on St. Trinians and is waiting till the last moment to push the button. Watch as Garcia takes a peek under is right armpit to see where Zenyatta is before popping the question and giving St. Trinians her cue that it's "Go" time. From the 3/16th pole to the wire, they put 8 lengths on Zardana. Martin did everything right and he still couldn't beat Zenyatta. I think he got a ridiculous 9 pounds in this race too.
She was always giving fields like ridiculous weight. Running with 124 regularly. 122 in her first race and demolished the field. She was setting track records when they took some weight off her back. LOL
It really looks like she's giving her weight! And people say weight doesn't matter..
The queen continues her legend !!!❤️❤️❤️🐎
Did you noticed that St Trinians never ran again after that race, she put such a scare into Zenyatta that they sent her into retirement
I do have one more thing to say...
19 for 19!!!
Says it all!...This Great Champion Of A Lifetime has brought us more joy than some people can comprehend...I really do feel sorry for you....Nothing will rob our joy or stop the Queen from fulfilling her DESTINY!!!
Long Live The Queen!!!
wow what a great call and a Great race by the Queen! She has some serious heart to always come back from last and win basically every race>
I just love St Trinians in this.
BEST CALL EVER!!!!!!!
such a beautiful horse, and now a beautiful mom!
This race is "crazy" good.
Lmao at the track announcer. Exciting call, great horse.
Oh the suspense lmao. Gotta love her.
And the announcer! "YESS!!!!" Lmao!
This one and her win 19 against switch were two of my fav races of her's. Plain and simple for all the haters, there won't be another mare like this probably ever. Look at her. She's MASSIVE. She's got all the heart in the world. She's all that and a bag of chips. I want a trainer out there to match what John Shirreffs was able to do with her. Train them to run dead last, settle into the pace some 12-20 lengths off the pace and then make the move 1/2 mile out. And win 19 in a row.
"She is not human. She is like an Indy Car." -- St. Trinians
We had Seabiscuit. We had Man o' war. We had Secretariat. There has to be a movie sometime in the future about the horse with the greatest "kick" of all-time, Zenyatta. I believe that Secretariat was the fastest horse to ever grace the planet (just by looking at the times, stats, etc.), but Zenyatta toyed with the other horses, literally. What a kick. The two most exciting horses to watch of all-time: Zenyatta and Secretariat.
was an awesome atmosphere there. I thought Mitchell had her number on this one. Till i watched the replay and saw that she never strained and didn't even pin her ears. Mike just had to show her the whip and she was gone
Great! Great! Great Call!!!
Thank you for good moments jockeys sport and Good Luck Mike Smith and horse Zenyatta, USA
Zenyatta the dream of every racehorse owner trainer and jockey 👏👏😀🤣 . None better.
Best call ever indeed...chills...n goosebumps...
One of the best calls of all time!🐎🐎🐎
Ol dude's scream gave me chills. That's effin passion. Go Z
@wolfpup233 the second half of her career she was giving the field 12-18lbs?? Something like that ridiculous. Her stretch runs are LEGEND.
Greatest call of all time!
Vic Stouffer We need You annoncing Again Please Vic!!!
He is announcing. He does the announcing at Oaklawn Park now
Does anyone know the name of the announcer calling the race? So much emotion and passion in his voice.
Vic Stauffer
@@-brent-8675 ? It's Vic Stauffer
Yes Vic Stauffer, 4 against one!
Hey! Why am I cryin'? SHE WON:)
i remember watching this live when i was 9
Stauffer really nailed this race call. One of the best in history, of course it was a thrilling race and the great Zenyatta but Vic brought his A game to this one.
Only a horse with an immeasurable desire to win can do what Zenyatta has done..been perfect! 17 for 17 baby, you are with the top champions of your sport. We are so happy to be living your dream with you:)
Best call ever Vic.
Awsome horse awsome race , I love watching this race it’s one of my favorites , great call
Damn. Zenyatta was HUGE COMPARED TO MOST OF THEM XD
EVeryone talking about what a great call this is, yes. Definitely. If you like great calls, check out Dave Rodman's call of the 2005 Preakness Stakes with Afleet Alex coming back from a near death experience to win in convincing fashion. Then in the Belmont a total romp. I think he's another from that Native Dancer line. Afleet Alex is right next to Zenyatta as far as my fanaticism goes. :D
Zenyatta just Loves Running its So Beautiful and just Frops me on My Knees Sobbing
If this race doesn't get your heart racing you may be on life support
Ears pricked on the line... What a mare
Mike Smith.
Legend.
Can't wait til he writes his biography.
Zenyatta was a good horse. Would had loved to see her outside of CA more on dirt, turf, and other competition.
I’d be a little biased calling that one too! Just... WOW!
holy crap, what a call
My dad used to take me to Holly when I was a kid - this gives me goosebumps 😂
"ZENYATTA YESSSS!!!!" I think this guy made a great bet on her ;)
Jesus Christ. If this didn't give you the chills.....then you have no soul.
Great stuff. Poor guy trying to be impartial but totally biased towards the Queen . I love it.
She. Was always the one who decided to start last but end winning. She just had her own mind about how to go.
wow that just gives me chills
And possibly the best horse ever, as well!
For all kinds of reasons Secretariat will forever be my Horse of All Times. But Zenyatta? Oh man... from another planet! That big... tank? 😂 She's beatiful. And she will also be in my heart forever. A WARRIOR! Deep respect.
Everybody has their opinions...mine says he shares the same stage with all the greats (Curlin, Secretariat, Sea Biscuit, etc.). But To me though, she is the funnest horse to watch, and most exctining to see run. To me, thats a fact.
Don't forget Tiznow or Ghostzapper...the 2010 BC Classic proved that Zenyatta was truly great.
She
1:54 oh my god..
My fav race ever
The Queen continues her legend 17 in a row..
WOW is all I can say....some kind of heart.
suitably demented call , awesome stuff
This was her best effort I think. With a furlong to go you could see her put in an extra gear and St. Trinians ran her heart out! Both horses had an incredible stretch run. If you ask her, Zen will go and she'll go hard all the way. I don't know if there is a horse that will be able to hold her off if Mike puts her in the right spot. She's got just too much length! IT looks like she's running against mini horses out there.
She is an amazing horse.
"YESS!!!!" love it.
17-0.....Need we say more....Go Zenyatta!!!
When someone asks me if horses are aware that they are racing, I show them this video.
omg, a modern secretariat. but secretariat was truly the best race horse of all time!! :)
Actually that would probably be Nearco.
I remember this race, that horse St Trinitians never touch back the track running again...
"ZENYATTA YESS!!!!" The announcer cracks me up xD
her finest moment
She is absolutely stunning!
People saying Ruffian was better.
Keep in mind that Ruffian never beat a male horse ever.
Ruffian also never raced outside the state of New York
I almost had a heart attack when i saw this!
If you go to 1:54 then play its exactly where he says "YES!"
Zenyatta was a whole damn problem. #legend
Don't forget about Rachel Alexander, she's up there also.
Someone should have checked in on Vic Staufer after that race-call. I swear the man had an aneurysm!
"IS ZENYATTA YESSS!!!!!!"
Just another day for The Queen
Which horse is more popular? Just curious.
Im not a goosebumps kind of guy but dammit it gets me every time...
She is The Best !
I feel sorry for the people who are to bull headed to just appreciate her
It's your loss...how sad!
I don't mean to be rude but I've had enough of people putting Mr. Sherriff's down...You people should celebrate the fact that we have ONE trainer in horse racing who actually.(novel idea) puts the HORSE first.....I thank god for him..furthermore one reason so many of us allowed ourselves to love her so is because we trust him to keep her safe...
Zenyatta...Champion of Champions.
Queen of ALL
The Best
@mlc520120 Good comment. Vic Stauffer talked to us, and we even filmed it, about how he would call her seventeenth win. So, you are correct. It had nothing to do with beating a G3 mare from Europe. If I ever post the video, you can tell from how Vic talked with us that he actually had no doubt that Zenyatta would win. He just wanted to make a good call when she did, and not bring up the word "record" since Pepper's Pride had the actual record.
@gomezisgod09 I think you meant this message for madmaxxhoho......We Agree!
Greatest horse i see race watch the kentucky derby in which tiz the law joined authentic and could not go by i said to my self if zenyatta was the one who joined authentic in the lane they would have to change is name to non authentic
wow the announcer seemed alittle excited...
contd.those mares faced colts race in and race out which takes it toll look at what happened to rachel when she started facing the colts regularly and theres a good chance the same would have happened to zen.i do know if zen ran in races she should have she would have never gotten to that many unbeaten.she came at a time when theres all kinds of media attention and social media which alot of horses never had and also casual fans started watching her and thinking wow shes an all time great.
Man:"...ZENYATTA, YESSSS!!!
i agree, coming from behind isn't easy. but being a pace setter that no one catch is an all together different animal.
