Hakeem is not even close to Shaq.
Shaq is one of the most underrated great player. People would hang on to any small instance of imperfection from Shaq in order to pay respect to other great centers like Hakeem.
If one ignores those narrative factor, and only look at the stats of head-to-head match up between Shaq and Hakeem (and other centers at the time), you would see Shaq dominated all those centers in almost all games by a large margin. It wasn't even close. Even in that infamous magic-rocket playoff series, Shaq was still pretty much had the same stats line as Hakeem... outside of that specific cherrypicked series, Shaq completely dominated Hakeem.
Seriously google "shaq hakeem heat to head matchup stats game by game" and see the result yourself.

I'm not good at judging defense, so I'm just going to look at some simple stats. Shaq career defensive rating is 101.3, Hakeem is better at 98. but 3 points is not that big of a difference (as big as defensive rating between Hakeem and Tim Duncan).
In comparison, Shaq's offensive rating is 113. Hakeem offensive rating is 108... 5 points difference.. and this is considering that Shaq played as a role player later in his career and Shaq peaks much harder to Hakeem.
Again, you are comparing a guy whose peak has 52%FG with someone whose peak has 60% FG. The average FG% of NBA at 1995 is ~45%.
The difference in efficiency between league average and Hakeem (7%), is about the same as the efficiency difference between Hakeen and Shaq (8%).
Shaq and Hakeem are just on completely different level offensively.. while their defensive rating only differ by 3 points... For comparison the difference between Tim Duncan defensive rating and Hakeem is also only 3 points. Just like Hakeem is not that much worse than Duncan defensively. Shaq is not that much worse than Hakeem defensively... but the two are not on the same level offensively.

@@bohanxu6125 For what Hakeem lacks in size compared to Shaq he makes up with his shooting and ball handling. If you’re not good at judging defense then don’t judge dominance because in basketball defense is definitely a part of it. FG% is not the overall determining factor. Nobody could match up with Shaq physically the same way they couldn’t match up with Hakeem athletically. There’s a reason players like Hakeem and Duncan would give him problems.

"FG% is not the overall determining factor."
When FG% difference is as ridiculously large as 8%, I think no other factors can overcome this in most cases.
By the way, one way to consider both offense and defense together. We can look at their head to head match up.
Google search "shaq vs hakeem head to head stats, game by game" and you will see that Shaq stats is just so much better and it's not even close. Even during Hakeem's prime from 1993-97. His stats is a bit worse than shaq... and if you look at the whole 90s, Shaq average 24 and 12 against Hakeem 20 and 9, while Shaq has like 10% FG% higher than Hakeem!!!! It's really not even close.
You can say Hakeem was old in the later games. However, when looking at game by game stats, you will see Shaq has been destorying Kakeem in almost every game every since Shaq's second year.
"There’s a reason players like Hakeem and Duncan would give him problems."
This is just wrong. 90s Shaq is probably the most underrated player of all time. Because Shaq was the most dominant in the early 2000s not 90s, people try to give 90s great centers flowers by downplaying Shaq in the 90s...even though Shaq was still the best center even in the 90s despite being young.

SHAQ just taught us how to use logic and a thought process to analyze a problem. Not feelings!

Rockets fan here since the late 80s my unbiased opinion I think Hakeem is the most talented center of all time but in terms of legacy I’d have to put shaq over hakeem imo it should go 1. Kareem 2. Bill russell 3. Shaq 4. Wilt 5. Hakeem

Olajuwon DOMINATED at both ends of the floor, no other center did that except for wilt, and personally I think the dream would've eaten his lunch!

Shaq is easily the most dominate center of all time. He was box office, night in night out one of my favorite players to watch even being a Celtics fan.

The problem with Wilt is we don’t really know how good he was because he didn’t play against anyone.
