How to fit a Grohe mixer tap | 3/8 tap install

- In this video I install a Grohe 23356 BauEdge Single Lever Mono Basin Mixer tap. This can be a difficult job due to the lack of access, in this particular case, it was in a small vanity unit. Grohe make excellent quality products, which is often why they are installed in most hotel bathrooms! I bought the tap in 2021 and never thought to check the connections. The tap I purchased should have had ½”BSP fittings, but they sent me one with 3/8” BSP tails, which meant buying the adaptors etc.

Great instruction as usual! i have had this same set in a the back room (unused) for a couple of years and other projects got in the way till the old mixers started leaking.. I checked the fittings beforehand as I wanted to fit some isolators I already had and as your video shoed.. they wouldn't fit these tails.. really appreciate the 3/8 BSP information.. now ordered proper items for picking up on Monday. I now have everything for the job now. I'd be scratching my head otherwise and a stalled job. Grateful.
I bought this tap in 2021, but was too busy to install it. When I looked at the tap I released the tails were 3/8”BSP, having checked the item on eBay, it should have come with ½”BSP tails. I guess it’s a bit late to complain over a year after the purchase!

thanks, everyone who has ever done taps around the home knows its a right chore on the knees, bum and back. I spotted the wrong tail sizes on ebay and amazon deals so checked with screwfix and appears their grohe taps come with 1/2 tails in the box so went straight there to buy one and luckily was similar priced. I had to redo the job a few days later went loose but tightened it up more and its fine after 2 years now, one thing I do not like though the grohe tap has to be levelled spot on with the basin or sink, if its off by 1-2mm you would get a leak otherwise on top, this made it tricky to get it just right so its good to check behind the grohe tap and that it is spot on and then tightening it up.
You've taught me so much Chez from plumbing to electrical to all things DIY. I aspire to be someone with the knowledge and skills like yours one day. I am currently at college doing my Electrical Installation Level 3.

Nicely done: I liked your method of using the box spanner combined with the ratchet. Like many I've struggled with the hoses wanting to twist during installation, never easy in those cramped spaces under a sink, so the swivel sounds like something I'd look for next time around. BTW: Good to see you back on here :)

Great video. Your comments about Grohe basin taps were spot-on. Very good quality, but many of them come with 3/8" BSP fittings (apart from their Quickstart, which are 1/2" BSP...confusing, I know), so you need to check the size of the old basin tap fittings and buy the right-sized fitting for the new tap. Check the manufacturer's specifications online. For plumbing DIY-ers unfamiliar with fitting isolation valves, there are two 15mm versions. One end is the usual compression fitting for the 15mm pipe and the other end is a 'male' flat 1/2" or 3/8" thread for the flexipipe fitting.🙂
You did well there faffing about under the sink. I'm not as flexible as I use be so it's always strenuous doing something like this. Still it beats paying top dollar to a plumber. Great demo and instructions 👍👍.

Great video, I’ve done a few taps and the advice you gave about using a ratchet is great, I never thought of that, it would save having to undo waste pipes to get the extensions on the box spanner’s 👍

Great video thanks for sharing. I recently put in Grohe taps, really nice. They came with a free spanner and also with a replacement pop-up waste. I sceptical of the pop-up waste when I first saw it (because the connector it was all plastic) but it has really cool double thread design with no route for water to get to the outer thread, so no pumbers mait needed.
There was a pop up waste with this kit, it had a large O ring instead of the seal, that you get with other waste fittings. In the past I’ve struggled with the supplied seals and often have to buy an additional seal, perhaps the O ring works much better than traditional seals.

Thank you for the video. Interestingly, last night I have installed one (very similar to this one). In the manual, they suggested to open the tap filter (at the end of the tap), after the installation and run the water for around 2 minutes. And only after, put back the filter on. maybe it is because if something from the factory (metal shavings for example) remained in the pipe, does not damage the filter.
That makes a lot of sense, especially if the pipework needs altering. The instructions with this tap were very basic, and really just a few pictures with no wording in English.

If you had to do a full drain down of a vented, hot water cylinder and the cold water storage tank that feeds the cylinder, you may well disturb some sediment and it may block the spray diffuser filter on the tap.
I can’t believe this. I replaced my kitchen tap with a mono block yesterday, mine doesn’t have the threaded bar and brass nut. It had a threaded collar and plastic sleeve that you hand tight.
As you say it’s tight especially fighting between a double sink.

I seem to remember you working on this basin before and having some trouble with it?! Nice new tap - hope it is working well.
Yeah, it used to block up all the time. I removed the trap one day and noticed that there was a hard deposit blocking the bottom of the U bend (I think it was solidified caustic soda). I chiselled that out and it’s been fine since 👍
You can get 1/2" tails to 3/8th" adaptors to pop into ballofix valves, 15mm-1/2" rad unions are useful, but the cost compared with buying in the incorporated 3/8th flat ballofix is around the same (the link you supplied) and less faffing involved. Thanks for the suggestion. Gonna buy a pair in..just in case.

Yeah, they are all gone now. I think at one point Reed owned Belgrave mills, Lower Darwen paper mill, Hollins grove paper mill and Dimmock paper mill. The last one I remember to close was Hollins grove paper mill, near to Crown paints.
Does the UK still have that odd hot water/cold water split? I remember visiting 12 years ago and finding it weird how the hot water and cold water came from two completely separate chambers.
Yes, many basins have two taps, one for the hot and one for the cold. I prefer that set up to be honest, especially as you can install traditional taps. A traditional tap washer costs pence, but some tap cartridges can be £30 +

I am not sure if you are aware but it is possible to fit one of these taps from ‘above’ if you put the backing plate on just held by the nut with a few threads you can fiddle the backing plate through the hole. Put one ear of the plate through the hole and rotate and feed it through. Amazingly it works and saves the upside down fiddle.

Yeah, it’s absolutely fine though. I’m not a fan of using PTFE or jointing compound with compression fittings unless it’s necessary.

Could you be lazy and just turn off the current isolation valves, even with the high mains pressure?
If isolation valves are present, then certainly 👍
