I don't now how they managed, but the reason the Soviets liked the big cannons was the fact they would pulvirize fighters in a single hit. However, from what I understand, even for the Soviets, was not easy, given that they would get extremily close. One of the biggest complaints they had, was the low-rate of fire. (At least for the P-39 and P-63).
Well Yak9T 37mm and Yak9K 45mm required Fighter escorts since they didnt do well as fighters with that armament and was made for ground attack . Also there was small issue that when you fired 37mm or 45mm cannon it will kill your engine and / or stall your plane since the recoil was massive on such light airplane.
@@LorathanF That is a myth. The cannon worked just fine with the motor, unless there was some mechanic's fault involved. Also, no, it didn't stall the plane -- the recoil was not that massive (you don't have to trust me, the energies are available online). Sh-37 and NS-37 were mostly employed against air targets, especially during bomber intercepts. And no, Yaks were excellent dogfighters, ones of the best USSR had (and the best until La-5FN arrival).

I've always said slow is fast, but I think you are gonna make me add slow is fluid, and fluid is deadly. Love these videos, the WW2 stuff here is my favorite since European Air War
The Yaks were some of my fav fighters in the old IL2, the 9T with the "tank buster" was great but firing the thing always jumps the aircraft around. The speed yaks could go and hold was what made it a great mid-high fighter just like the P-51 or sorta the FW, better in some regards....at least IMO.
