    I've got to admit, had any of the consoles we bought had that sheet of paper on the top we would have scanned them that way! But not one of them came with the paper!
    Also the Ben 10 cards did NOT have that target reticule you showed and some X-Men cards don't have it as well. So even Mattel didn't use their own system!😂
    We had consoles that straight up failed to scan or run any games at all. So it still would have been a problem. We went through multiple Hyperscans to make that one video. I'm happy to see you found one that works though! KEEP IT SAFE. IT'S A UNICORN.

      It is wild how quality of different consoles of this type can wary. I rember few times two different people buy plug-and-play consoles and one works fine and other barely operates. That's why it is good to see different takes on same device by different people on CZcams to see what it "really is".

    FWIW with the reviews - In the case of AVGN specifically, I can see him possibly not actually having the instructions. Getting the things used may have not come with them. Still an oversight, but with how quickly he has to make content, not the most egregious.

    There's an even earlier toys-to-life game, but it was only in Japan. One of the big figures in Webdiver (a Transformers-like toyline from Takara) has a plug-and-play game built into it, and the rest of the figures connect to that one to add features to the game.

    I think this toys/cards-to-life thing is best for either free to play or arcade games. In Japan this kind of thing is common. You don’t have to buy the game each time there is a new update or sequel. Just go to the machine, insert 100 Yen, put in the cards / token, play, and you can bring home the cards / tokens.
    It would also help when the games are GOOD.

    • @aleanddragonITA

      Another thing Toys-To-Life Could do would be to not Limit themselves to one Game (Like Amiiboo, and even if at the launch of the game it doesn't have ToyToLife's Contents, they could see which Games are selling & which ToyToLife are selling and make some Free DLCs/Free Updates that can be accessed only via TheToyToLife
      For example, Mario Amiiboo is very popular I guess & Pokemon is also popular
      They could do an update that if you use Mario Amiiboo on Pokemon then you get Mario Cosplay Pikachu)
      Note:: IMO Lego Dimensions could & should have tried to be free as mostly uses ReUsed Assets (and non ReUsed Assets could have been reused later in other games
      For example Lego Sonic & Lego Doctor Who could be used as an excuse to do Full Lego Sonic & Lego Doctor Who Games)

    Small note: A disjointed hitbox does not just refer to a hitbox that doesn't line up with an animation, it can also be a hitbox without an associated hurtbox. For example, a physical punch or kick would probably hurt if it got hit back, so it has a hurtbox that allows a character to be hit out of the attack or trade. However, a weapon may not have a hurtbox so attacking the weapon during active frames will just cause you take damage, it is a disjointed hitbox.

    "Neat idea, poorly executed." Emphasis on poorly. That tends to explain too many new gadgets and devices nowadays. I like the idea of having different loadouts or costumes for characters you bring to your friends house for a fight tournament or having to show of medals for beating the game, or beaten levels with various difficulty increasing atmosphere cards. Or if the level was recorded on the card, I could see some of the playground trades take that into consideration, or paying your friend who's really good at the game to level your card for you. If they at least made a decent game, I could see this being a cult classic. As is, it's just a laughing stock.

    I actually wonder if rerez and avgn got the console and corresponing games/cards second hand (say from ebay or something, like most retro consoles) without the packages and the manual, though i haven't watched either of their videos on the mattel hyperscan recently i do remember they didn't show the box the console comes in so it's not out of the possibility they baught the console itself, the games, and the cards without bothering to go out of their way to get the manual. This could explain why they had such a hard time getting their cards to register on the hyperscan.

    • @Kohdok

    • @Shenaldrac
      @Shenaldrac Před rokem +3

      Even if that is the case, it's kinda inexcusable for a reviewer to not actually get the full product that they're supposed to be reviewing. If they can't be bothered to find or read the instructions, then that's on them, it's _their_ failing. When you put out a review, you are going to influence the reactions and impressions of the people who see it. And people like AVGN have substantial followings, these are not insignificant numbers of people. So I think it's completely reasonable to expect that if you're going to make it your job, your _profession_ to review products, that you do your due diligence and make sure you have as complete a version of that product as possible to review.

      Maybe in some years they could release a boxed set of a deck builder board game, like Resident evil. Not to USA though because of the low iq consumer potential, but maybe Brazil and Europe where people can manage a non-digital environment and actual instruction booklets. "Rare Cards" exist for a reason: Let's say the favorite character on the X-Men game was Magneto, and he has 3 Special Move & a Killer Move, that's 5 cards you have to collect for a viable Magneto pick.
    Now run that on every pack of 5 cards, only 1 is "Rare", but from the rooster of... let's say 30 characters, 5 are considered "Rare". Now you chances of getting a full Magneto pick are trashed, and no kid on the playground is gonna want to give his "Rare Magneto" unless he wanted another "Rare Pick".

    Your scanning rant does make sense mostly. However. What kid is going to read a manual for a game that has their favorite characters in it. If you give a kid a GameCube and a copy of fairly odd parents shadow showdown. They aren’t going to read the manual, they are 9 times out of 10 going to rip the box open, slap the game in, and go nuts. If anything, the hyper scan scanner, should’ve had a molded in dent to hint at how the card should be placed. Like on many Tokusatsu toys, you see a peg and a hole, you go “oh hey can that fit together!?” And suddenly you figure out the combination. The massive red circle kinda makes you think to just put the card on the scanner, and expect it to work, but the chip being only in the corner, is probably what makes it odd, the chip placement is not the best

    The trading point you make is kind of dumb because, as you point out, the cards are repetitive as hell, which means the person I'm trading with likely has the same crap. But more than that, there are five games. If I play Magic or Pokemon or something, that's one game. In this case I need someone who also bought my game. Also, you can not finish a game you paid for without the elaborate scheme

    • @slasherfan9748
      @slasherfan9748 Před 8 dny

      Another problem is, wouldn’t the trading work only if the games themselves were popular? You see people trade Pokemon and Yugioh cards, but not Redakai, Chaotic, Duel Master, or Kaijudo cards, at least not in a common group of people. And the fact the cards are related to video games means they would have to depend on the games themselves being popular. Sure they’re based on popular themes like Ben 10 and Marvel, but if the gameplay isn’t good, then they’re hardly worth talking about.
      And not only that, the games don’t even make use of more than one copy of the same card like most card games do.

You and Kohdok both seem to be being dishonest in this sense, though both reviewers should’ve probably looked up the instructions during their review.

    Ok, you really don't need to go off on the other reviewers for not realizing the reticle wasn't just a logo. It's on the back of (only some of!) the cards and it's one hundred percent certain that the consoles were bought second hand and who keeps manuals and boxes anymore. The specific way to do it simply isn't obvious without those instructions. It's not like amiibos or skylanders where there is exactly one way that a reader and scannable object are capable of interfacing in the first place, it's a giant glowing circle with a small indistinct smaller circle on it that you put a very specific part of a RECTANGLE onto in order to scan it. That's stupid idiotic design and two separate reviewers had the exact issue. You can clearly tell it's the fault of poor design and not the reviewers "lying" like you claim.

  • @Roboshi2007
    @Roboshi2007 Před 8 měsíci

    I think the problem with the cards is simply expecting someone in the 7-12 age range to hold the cards in the exact right way each time. the kind of kid to not read a manual.
    Things like amiibo, skylanders etc, all have bases that can easily show which side is the bottom. But these cards don't, it would make more sense for the character side to be face up when scanning so you know what you're holding as you do it.
    Plus the whole idea of the console seems to be in this Uncanny valley of "too expensive for a plug and play but too cheap looking to be a console at the time"
