I wrote this song, on a piece of blue construction paper, to my gfriend when she was 16 yo! She still has it to this day! We have now been married now for 50 yrs. The most beautiful song ever written! stands the test of time!
@ARACHNID SPIDER CONGRATS!! To
You and the Mrs.! ...and Many More! Here, try this Song!😎
You didn't write this song. Marty and Paul did it!!!
@@samsebibog I guess there was a word missing somewhere......was it "out" ?😉
That's a beautiful Love Story ❤❤ to you both .
So cool, super cool 👍🏻💪🏻👏
as long as this song exist, there is still good music to go to.

@@11fireflower AMEN
the days when love songs were really 'love songs'. almost 60 yrs later and just as beautiful as when I heard it the first time.
That’s beautiful my brother. Here I am first time at 29 years old. Hopefully I’ll be able to come back 60 years later
@@paulperrone13 have a blessed life my friend
Marty Balin-one of the best lyricists of the 60's
A very underrated singer as well. For me, his best work was with Jefferson Airplane. He, of course, had some hits with Jefferson Starship but things were not the same. Jorma Kaukonen and Jack Cassidy are all over this album!
Of any generation mate
Kantner was co-writer of this song.
@@built4hurricanes Music maybe. Lyrics were by Marty. Marty was a true gentleman and remembered fondly.
Jerry Garcia is the guitarist, true story
Comforting sound in these strange days.
You should try the song Strange Days by The Doors
You’re too close to my insides man...
I never thought that reality would be stranger than an acid trip until 2020
I am an American. I grew up in the 60's....and this is my music.
Saw them in 1968 at The Carosel Ballroom….with The Dead!!!!! I am 81 now and it is truly like “today”. Saw Janis also in San Jose in ‘68….all pre-Woodstock! So called “music” today is trash-gibberish-noise! Rock on! 😎🇺🇸🤟

How Neat!! How lucky, too, wow! Strawberry Alarm Clock played at my High School, I was there for that. And was at the Devonshire Downs music fest, but my date took us home before the Doors came onstage. His dad was a LAPD Sargent and warned him about the crouds for the Doors. Ah, well. We saw the Edwin Hawkins Singers?!?
@@jillianclark4076 ...Edwin Hawkins Singers? I loved the arrangement they did with Melanie on Candles in the Rain
I know, yes, that is a beautiful song, too. And every Easter I send my pal Lorri the most beautiful song, " OH Happy Day". But in '69, or '70, i wanted to hear something more Music Festivalish!! Not radical, i didnt love the Doors till about 10 years later, but more Pop??? Thanks for your note! Music Comments peoples are the best.
RIP Dad. Miss you! 1953-2020. Navy Vietnam Vet. DDG-33, USS Parsons.
So very sorry for your loss. I hope you find comfort.

When did he serve?
My dad was in the Navy too in Nam. Agent Orange got him because he rode in one of those PC boats down the canals. 2007 RIP. My heart goes out to you.
So Sorry Brian...
Hard to believe I have lived 60 years and never heard this song before but the wait was well worth it.
You MUST get a copy of 'Surrealistic Pillow', the album this song is on,
It's my favourite, and it could be yours
I prefer Tom Scott - Today
There will never be another Jefferson Airplane ✈️ They were so multitalented, every single one of them. The sound they created, was and always will be one of a kind just like them. ✈️
This is the San Francisco sound. My high-school hired the Airplane to play an assembly. I think we paid a grand. Or more. Psychedelic definitely had a place to stay in the 60s and 70s
Couldn’t handle the Starship but the Airplane…
Yes. Initially the warm act to the Grateful Dead at the Fillmore. Graham sure had that backwards.
@@ArthurSchwartz-nl2di They had a good 'Spiritual Advisor' to help them on this their second album.
1967: Marty Balin wrote this. He also wrote "Miracles". Magnificent. Be at peace.
Transported back... feeling how this song grabbed you and wrung emotion out of you...a drop at a time
Yes amazing voice
This song is good but it hits different at 3 am

even at 5am bro
Especially on acid
Then try it again at 8am if still you don't like it then "TURN THE PAGE" as BOB SEGER would say... 😁✌

Marty Balin has a golden throated voice. Also Jerry Garcia’s lead guitar 🎸 is wonderful! He sat in, didn’t want credit.
I did not know that!!!!!!!!
@@dennisg.582 The producer didn't know that either.
The most beautiful love song ever written. Thank you Marty Balin
Listening to music is really a way to time travel
This song makes me feel like I'm floating on a cloud, it sums up what the 60s was about, peaceful and mellow, beautiful lyrics, perfection
Absolutely agree. It was a great time. Rog. Pacific sunset records.

Yeah the cold war was very peaceful.
To me, this song perfectly captures the hippie life and vibe. Perfect.

The guitar/drum rift constant throughout is mesmerizing...puts one in a deep deep state of euphoria and peace. I want to listen to this on repeat next time I do LSD.
What beautiful memories of the golden days of the 60's...it will take you on a mind trip for sure
The lyrics are so beautiful!
This and “Coming Back to Me” are absolutely God-tier lyrics and tone/mood.

In the mid '80's, my Dutch wife & I were headed toward divorce. Only I didn't know it yet. She'd gone home with my son & preggers with my daughter. I followed. Found a job with Pennzoil with a company car, and often at the end of my day, I'd head to a very quiet place by the dunes west of Alkmaar and put both these songs on (cassette tape). It was what helped save my sanity. The wind coming in off the North Sea, blowing through the tall trees and saw grass of the dunes... and these 2 tunes by Jefferson Airplane. They are, and will always be a part of my personal history. God bless 'em for the music!
This was the first Airplane song that really melted my heart,
This song is just beautiful
I used to think what a great wedding song as the bride is going down the aisle
The drumming is surrealistic!Worth going through all the pain of living just to have heard this song.
The sincerity in Marty Balin's voice shines out like a Beacon.
I find that guitar riff by Jerry Garcia to be haunting.
Mr. Garcia cleverly recycles his own lead-guitar riff from the Dead's version of "Morning Dew". Brilliant!
Too^
@Dakota Lane sure is...blew my mind aswell
This guitar riff teminds me of Brazilian 60's sound, we were in serious politics chaos and people went out to the streets to protest but ended up caught by the militaries, so we had just "the promise of a sunny summer" back in the day. All we had left was apathy and that riff captures that, strangely enough.
Still listening to Jefferson Starship in 2020 at 69 years old and will until the day I drop over. The 60s culture forever baby.. still an old hippie and loving it.
Still
Listening at 72 years old here. We were blessed with the most incredible music of all time which holds so many precious memories . When my time comes to leave this earth and lie on my deathbed, my children & grandchildren already have my playlist ❤️
One of the most beautiful songs I've ever listened to.
the days when musicians were friends and hung out together, Jerry Garcia's presence in the studio lead to him adding that beautiful little harmonic embellishment to the beats - pure magic!!!
PERRO . Planet Earth Rock'n'Roll Orchestra
Born in 65 to hippy parents and older brothers and sisters, were from Venice beach,I was raised listening to the Airplane
The Airplane, with Signe , is still my favorite incarnation.
So beautiful. Your group was never given enough credit for your gifts!! ❤
I listened to this at some point soon after I separated from my abusive ex. Hearing this was like listening to an echo from a poor fool determined to love someone who was incapable of loving themselves or loving back in any wholesome capacity.
I wept for that poor fool, and was free. But that wide-eyed, “anything you want, I swear,” is long, long dead.
Surviving experiences with persons who can not be Loving is a wonder to cherish.
Never to be forgotten, some never do survive.
The drum sound is truly unique. The beat builds to a crescendo but at the same time it has slightly muffled sound as if it was being played behind a screen?
It's like DAMN DAMN DAMN, I LOVE YOU!!!
I'd love to see this played as the first song at a wedding. People would be perplexed at first, but there'd be lots of tears about 3 minutes later...
Got to see these guys in college. Had a great time.
I could only wish as a 21 year old I live it through you
if you still remember any of the concert, you could not have had that great a time
I know we were there, I know and feel those times, those places you can never go back to. The world was a different planet.
TR5T Well said, TR. You speak for all of us who lived through it. A different planet indeed.
Poetry set to song..and heartfelt. Good job Marty.
Such a dream like melody, it takes me away...
wow haven’t cried that hard in a long time
2021 peace and love. New beginnings out of fear and loathing. My wife's parents got married the year this album released 1967.
Years ago I lived with my parents and they had two rescue dogs. One I just loved a black long hair Lab. Her name was Trixie. I would take her to the beach and I would sit with a bag of Cheetos and a 7-up. They were such simple days and everything was o.k. I often think of those Beach Days with my Trixie Girl. How the world was and how happy I was back then. I had an 8 track and I had this track played it coming and going. Looked at her in the back seat asleep and so happy. I miss her so much.
It's great memories about things past like this that makes you who you Crystal. Rejoice in the good times !!!
I miss my dog too.😢
Lyrics:
Today, I feel like pleasing you more than before
Today, I know what I wanna do, but I don’t know what for
To be living for you is all I want to do
To be loving you it’ll all be there when my dreams come true
Today you’ll make me say that I somehow have changed
Today you’ll look into my eyes, I’m just not the same
To be any more than all I am would be a lie
I’m so full of love I could burst apart and start to cry
Today, everything you want I swear it all will come true
Today, I realize how much I’m in love with you
With you standing here, I could tell the world what it means to love
To go on from here, I can’t use words they don’t say enough
Please, please listen to me
It’s taken so long to come true
And it’s all for you, all for you
Reminds me of a special time xxxxx
😢😢😢 paint someone that not with us no more - Trees

Thank you!
Today, I feel like pleasing you
More than before
Today, I know what I want to do
But I don't know what for
To be living for you
Is all I want to do
To be loving you
It'll all be there
When my dreams come true
Today, you'll make me say
That I somehow have changed
Today, you'll look into my eyes

Such an incredibly stuinning album
This is such a beautiful song. Love you Dad.
In this heartfelt folk rock ballad, Marty Balin sings about discovering his best self through the love of another. It’s a sentiment that made “Today” (1966) a favorite at wedding and tribute ceremonies.
Unlike Jefferson Airplane’s debut album, “Jefferson Airplane Takes off” (1966), which includes several tunes penned by Marty Balin and Paul Kantner, this is the sole lay on “Surrealistic Pillow” (1967) that is credited to both founding members.
Balin claimed that he authored “Today” (1967) in order to get to know Tony Bennett and, above all, to offer the song to the elder artist so he could - maybe - interpret and record it❕(AND WHY NOT⁉️)
While the Airplane were working in Studio B, the Rolling Stones were in Studio A, and Mr Bennett was in Studio C. Balin and the Stones hanged out and decided they all wanted to meet “the last of the great crooners”*.
Their common wish to encounter the legendary performer was not fulfilled, and “Today” remained an Airplane piece. In fact, it ended up being one of their most enduring hits❕
All this shows one fact : on the one hand, celebrities are idols to their fans, but on the other hand, those personalities are fans of their own idols, just like the rest of us‼️ 💚🎶💙
* In 2021, Anthony Dominick Benedetto, a.k.a.Tony Bennett, broke the Guinness World Record for the oldest person to release an album of new material (“Love For Sale”), at the age of 95 years and 60 days❕
Did Tony Bennett get to record this ?
A shame, if not so.
@@noelsalisbury7448 To my knowledge, he did not record it. Best regards to you, Noel.
OK Spotify threw this an autoplay and being the first time I heard this I thought it was mid 2010s dream pop.
So so so so so so ahead of its time.
Great song!
Seriously - what is that ? Does it sound good & give a positive vibe thing ?
I'm interested in good , new music too....
I quote this song every time I talk about how much I love her
One of my all time favorites!!!!!
The most beautiful song ever written! Its almost impossible to listen to without tears, it was me and my fathers song we'd sit there for hours going back and forth song for song and every song that came on we'd both be like "idk dude this one might be the best song" 😄 🤣 😂 every song was the best because we loved music so much it was almost impossible to have a favorite but this song is definitely it!!
Great song and lyrics - eternal classic
Marty Ballin is brilliant.
An achingly beautiful song
RIP Paul Kanter (Paul Lorin Kantner, 17 March 1941 - 28 January 2016) 😭😭😭😭😭😭😭

Absolutely adore this song !
This song is very powerful ❤️melts my heart
Such a really intense song it's speaks emotions that are beautiful and sad both.
I personally believe this is a spiritual song. A mind realization of God.
So true Dennis.
Perfection, memories bliss ✌
This was my Sunday afternoon crash album in the late 60's early 70's
My god this song is so beautiful! Even more beautiful than when I first heard it as a teenager! 🥰
Paint a picture someday of something that makes you happy. It doesn't matter if you're good or not. Just do it and think of this song when you finish it and look at your quirk.
Great song from their best album...
My search said that the song is sung by Grace Slick. She does backup. The lead is Marty Balin.
I think this song was written for my lost love in the Philippines ! She doesn't realize the tremendous love she has has lost from someone who would have been a devoted husband far beyond any she could ever imagine ! In the words of Adele, "Never mind , I'll find someone like you ". I wish you all the best too!
To say that everytime I hear this song I am a Time Traveler! I'm 75 years old and everytime since I heard this song so long so long ago I'm in love with it! It is so beautiful, it brings tears to my eyes!
Even today after all these years and 2 marriages it still leaves me remembering these times! I have never gotten tired of it!💖
What an incredibly simple, but mesmerizing arrangement they did on this song. Anybody know how they mic'd the drums and used other effects to get this drum sound...which sounds like something between thunder and waves crashing on the beach?
Love these times. I’ll share this w/ the ones I love..
My favorite airplane song.
Great song. Great production.
I love you, Dad
You are the best Dad there ever was, is, or will be
a masterpiece
My favorite Marty Balin song - no one sings a love song like Marty
The 1960s produced the BEST music and movies.
Nothing in 2023 even comes close.
We lived the best of times. Today’s world is a nightmare!
I would go back to those days in a heartbeat if I could
the harmony between voices and instruments is SO GOOD and the melody introducing "Toodaay..."
I didn't learn about this cover until I watched "the Greatest Beer Run Ever" and I originally became a fan of this song via Pete Rock and C.L. Smooth sampling Tom Scott's version - for the song "They Reminisce Over You" - Jefferson Airplane did a beautiful piece with it
The very epitome of folk rock taking a left turn.
I love this song!
I will always love you all...forever and for always 🙏
I'm so glad to have made it thru the sixties, the greatest rock out there, spirit, quicksilver,Jefferson airplane, chocolate watch band,13th floor elevators and so many more
"I am so full of love I could burst apart and start to cry."
This sums me up over the last couple of years. Near death will do that to you.
I found this gem at the library years ago going to research on something else all together that had nothing to do with music .
Why do I live in the 2020 If I find myself in the 60's? It's not that I only belong, I'm whole there.
