  • Sabine Wren might seem like your typical purple haired punk, but beneath her rebellious exterior, is an extremely complicated person. Who perhaps has some of the worst luck in Star Wars history. No matter how hard she tries to do the right thing, Sabine Wren constantly finds herself surrounded by death and destruction.

Sabine's story and journey is what makes her my favorite Mandalorian and one of my favorite Star Wars characters. You can tell Filoni has handled her very carefully from the start, from showing her mysterious trust issues at the start of Rebels to us finally finding out her backstory during her outburst while training with Kanan. Sabine has done terrible things, and those terrible things weigh heavily on her. You're right that she very easily could have turned into a monster after everything she's been through. And yet she didn't. And I think we have the Ghost Crew, and now Ahsoka, to thank for that. Her adoptive family who supports her and gives her guidance along the way so that she can stay in the light instead of falling into the chaos that her mind pulls her towards. I am incredibly happy that Sabine is a central character in Ahsoka and that we're gonna continue to see growth in her in this series.

@zordusthedeathsong I understand, I think. The characters of Rebels initially were archetypes of TV writing, with Hera being the mother-figure. At first Sabine was the woman that Ezra crushed on, and then she developed from there. She had to change because a show is not allowed to have that as an archetype any more (ya know). GT says, "while Ezra, Ahsoka and even Hera Syndulla had their own character arcs, ... Sabine Wren never grew." It helps to review what was Hera's character arc, her back story, et cetera. That is in part related to her archetype role as the "mother" of the "gang" in Rebels. That archetype is still tolerated (wink) so Hera's arc was allowed to be simpler.

      And also Ahsoka.
Both character have a similar background, Ahsoka was a Child Soldier, she left the jedi order, not only for their betrayal towards her, also for what the jedi Order had become in the clone wars, some kind of inergalactic NATO. She feels deeply guilty for the fall of Anakin in the Dark side. That at the same time the Anakin's fate have huge implications in the fall of the own jedi order, as the rise of Palpatine and the empire.
And both are in similar personal situation now. One is stuck in Lothal, alone, one time the Ghost Crew has disappeared wittout a clearly purpose, the other also alone but like a wanderer or a ronin.
The biggets differences between the two, are in the approach or perspective, one is jedi, the other mandalorian. Practically oppositte, similar to jedi with the sith. But also the two grew up with connections or atachments to this kind of opposite side. Sabine with Ezra and Kanan, Ahsoka with Bo Katan and Satine Kryze.

As for the military aspect. I served for 22 years, I can tell you that being a Commander or even a Captain does not translate into maturity and structure. At this point. Sabine is like an inactive reservist that has experienced trauma from war. She has isolated herself on Lothal to protect Lothal because she promised Ezra. She watched Ezra leave thinking he is dead, and you think she is supposed to be all hunky dory? You are delusional. As for the structure, Hera is thinking that Sabine needs to find a purpose and a reason to focus. At this point she has lost hope that Ezra is coming home and after she lost her family on Mandalore and lost her people shortly after that, do you think she's very trusting? Now I'm waiting for Zebb, just bcz he could help Sabine with "survivor's guilt", given that probabilly she blame herself for having started the chain of events that ended with The Great Purge and Mandalore's holocaust.

Sabine is I think more human than many in the Star Wars universe. She seems to suffer more guilt over her actions, yet she also seems to yearn forgiveness and connection.
    Confession.
I Ship Sabine and Ezra. I have done the first episode of Rebels. It seems like Falloni does to. Sabine and Ezra were the closest in ages and it was clear that Ezra had a Crush on the Colorful Mando girl from the moment he laid eyes on her.
She of course eye rolled, yet the pair grew closer than all but Hera and Kanin. She watched over him, teased him and encouraged him in a way even the other close knit Ghost crew never did. She was also careful with him in that she clearly knew the words that could destroy him yet never used them. Sabine was someone whom had fallen into a found family. Ezra was a fellow Orphan. The two related in a manner few others could have. Time and time again they had close moments of platonic intimacy. Every new bucket stolen for Ezra a new Loath Cat design. Something again not shared with the rest. Even when he tried to come on too her her rejection was still used for something with a wholesome affection.
In the Dark saber Arc Ezra wasn’t just a friend accepted by the House Wren but was gifted with a jet pack and treated almost as family. Ezra’s message was clearly important to Sabine. And well the rest of the Ghost crew moved on joined the rebellion and then new republic. Sabine chose to stay on Loathal. In the very tower Ezra made his home.
I think she again seeks a connection to one of the few people in the Universe willing to accept her and share her sins. I think that’s part of how she keeps her faith. Her connections.
It gives her a sense of morality in asking how she can be a better person for those she loves and wants. She acted as a protector for Loathal because she claims she misunderstood Ezra’s last message to her. I suspect she chose this life because she wanted to be closer to Ezra. When she was morning him. Yet she can’t move on. That’s what’s holding her back.
She has trapped her self in trying to Morn Ezra, yet seeking him and trying to find his spirit.

I was screaming when BoKatan was shown on the Mandalorian. I was wondering what happen to Clan Wren, when the empire destroyed Mandalore. Clan Wren did lose alot of troops against the super weapon, but they would atleast some troops being trained coming up from the youth. I am disappointed on the show, because I believe it should explore the clan system of Mandalore and be a trial to reunite all Mandalore. Remember, Clan Wren is based on Krownest. They didn't lose their population, like on Mandalore, and there are other planets in the group. Mandalore planets are known to lack huge population, because war has stripped the planet. I think Concord Dawn is the most populated planet, but that was because it was once he grainary of Mandalore, before war wiped out it's food production capability. My belief that the show would show BoKatan's behavior also contributed to the destruction of her planet. That she was vindictive and try to get revenge on clans allied to Clan Saxon, and that was why they weren't able to defend properly. I think the show has to be about her trying to get people to hate her to join to reunite Mandalore. Also it should be an exploration of other Mandalorian planets. Like her home planet. Heck, her home seems more hospitable than any other Mandalorian planet .

It doesn’t seem strange to me at all. When you are brainwashed, you do… things. Bad things. Things that a normal person with all the information would never do. But when you only have parts of the story, when you are socially pressured to be a certain way, to think certain things, you can become a monster. There’s that old adage that everyone can be a villain given the right circumstances. The Empire’s propaganda machine is tailor made to create those circumstances.
Once she broke free from the grip of that, she regretted everything. She then did everything in her power to make it right, to fight against evil in the galaxy, to bring about the change that was needed to thar no one else would have to fall to the same forces as she.
Contrast this with Kylo, who with all the possible positive factors in his life to mold him into a hero, yet had all the traits of a villain. They exist in the same gray area between hero and villain a lot of the time, but they’re there for different reasons.

You need to have a clear mind and purpose to engineer a weapon capable of doing the most damage you can imagine of doing and then use it. The empire surely used Sabine, but everything she did was out of her own free will, capabilities and with a clear mind.
I would compare her more to Galen Erso, the cannon creator of the Death Star, he as well joined the Empire but unlike her, he stopped when he suspected that his Kyber Crystal investigation was going to be used as a superweapon, he went to live a peaceful life as a refugee without killing anyone, until the empire discovered him, taking him away and destroying his family in the process. Forcing him to work on the power capabilities of the Death Star, no free choice involved. (check Rogue One).
She is no hero. That doesn't mean Sabine doesn't deserve redemption chances, but when she continue swapping who she kills, it's pretty hard to argue her goodness with a kill score of 50,578 (from 'Sabine Wren - list of deaths star wars fandom').

@@BattlewarPenguin You're completely right, you should have a clear mind and purpose to engineer a weapon. I'm a physicist. Something multiple professors have iterated time and time again is how we, as physicists, have the knowledge to create and destroy worlds. We need to think clearly when working because everything will become a weapon. We usually talk about it in reference to nuclear fission and fusion, but it applies more deeply than that.
When you live under propaganda, physicists are not given this encouragement. They are instead encouraged to use every word of their knowledge to create the deadliest weapons to defeat the enemy for the homeland. You are supposed to not think with clarity, but anger and hate. That's just the sad truth. She lived under this type of system. I hate to admit it, but if I did, I am certain my work would be more weapons-focused. I have a natural proficiency toward electricity and magnetism as well as kinetics and optimization. So truthfully, I see a lot of myself in her. She was a misguided child, indoctrinated into a brutal system which encouraged anger and hate. This is the natural result. Realistically? She had as little choice, just like Galen Erso. Being a kid shoved into that kind of environment with her natural proficiencies had the exact result you would expect.
Though, I will say, killing over 50,000 people can make you a hero. I doubt many would argue that the Polish Underground during WW2 was anything but heroic, despite their over 6,000 assassinations of Nazi leaders and up to 150,000 individual Nazis killed. Who you kill and why makes up the majority of morality. Unless you wanna say Luke was a villain for killing 1.5 million people when he blew up the death star.

@@tyler1107 I don't want to bring real life examples to this conversation as it would become grim really fast, which isn't the intention of Star Wars which wants to be entertaining, hopeful and inspiring. We live in a more complex world. Nuclear bombs are considered bad yet they helped end the war sooner with a lower death count. Nuclear medicine has saved a lot of lifes too. Things are just a tool for humanity to use and we decide how we use it, living with the consequence of that.
We aren't our past actions but what we choose to do, we may never have all the correct information to make the best decision always, specially there will be bad actors that will try to ofuscate the truth, manipulating with even bad faith (that I do agree), and systems aren't perfect which can produce a lot of systematic suffering.
Some people do argue that the Rebels aren't good as they have taken a lot of lifes and the fight escalation allowed the Empire to take more aggresive policies.
That's why I truly believe in people like Ahsoka, Obiwan, or the Dutchess Satine. They were the true essence of pacifism navigating very well the imperfect systems they were in. But I have a tendency of believing more in particular people rather of groups of people. I truly believe individuals can choose the best option for themselves rather than the party they belong.

When Ahsoka said, "Even the right reasons can have the wrong consequences," it struck me as pseudo-philosophical trying to masquerade as profound. As I realized, it's a sloppy repackaging of the old adage, "To do the wrong thing for the right reasons." At first glance, it might appear to be sage insight, yet upon closer inspection, it's like Sabine's connection to the Force: pretty weak. Consequences are neither right nor wrong. They just are. Our actions and the reasons that motivate them are what we can control. We have no say in what comes afterward.

It makes sense, we don't exactly know what year this "massacre" happened. I personally believe it happened during Rebels when our characters were too busy being here, but it could be a year after because I think thrawn was gone 1bby. Maybe that's why instead of returning to her family, who are honestly probably all dead, she stayed in at Lothal for Ezra. After all, he gave her his lightsaber. I'm sure Hera talked to Ahsoka about Kanan training Sabine with the Darksaber, and thats how their adventures started. But again, ALOT happens in 9-10 years

@xrstevenson But why would an unaligned force user, who in the first episode scoffed at "jedi protocols" raise a non-force user that only trained on lightsaber use? It doesn't pass the smell test.
In the second episode, they even point out that Sabine is not a force user.
After Rebels in which Kanan, a doubt filled Jedi that never completed his training, taught Ezra, a cocky force strong young man, how to be a new kind of Jedi this Ahsoka/Sabine traditional Jedi/Padawan relationship does not make sense.
I hope Dave Filoni has a plan because trying to fundamentally change the essence of a character just to make a story happen does not work!

In one of the trailers for Ahsoka, as well as when Kanan is training Sabine, it is mentioned that all living things have access to the force. Force sensitive just means you have a better natural understanding of how to access and use the force. It does not mean that people that have never shown the ability can never utilize it. I keep hearing people push the idea that aptitude is the same thing as capability and that just shows ignorance. Many people in history never had high "aptitude" scores on things and still became successful in the field they had a low aptitude for. Only reason people can't relate to everything she does in Rebels is because they keep thinking she's a 14 or 15-year-old girl when she's introduced. She's not. She's more like 18. So she goes off to the galactic MIT at 14. Is so enamored with the things that she can do she doesn't consider to think of a consequences of creating a weapon that can target mandalorian armor until it's too late. @@jasonchambers1679 I think the training she does with the dark saber really helps flush out sabine's character. You get a little bit in the first season when she's suspicious of fulcrum and insists on going along. All because she wants blindly trusted the Empire and created a super weapon for them. She's been burned. But when she trains with the dark saber she reveals that trauma. She was doing what her family expected. She was serving the Empire. And she was used by it. When she tried to do the right thing, they burned her. And her family, so she thought, had turned on her too. So she feels lost. If asajj ventress is such a beloved character in clone Wars because she is betrayed by count dooku and then goes on to become a bounty hunter and survivor of the night sisters with all this trauma, then you can clearly understand Sabine. She lost everything as well. Except she found Hera's family. It was the love between those ragtag members that really helped make the show and salvage each of the characters from their darkness. Kanan was a drunkard burned by order 66. Hera wanted to fly so much she was shunned by her family for not staying to fight for her home. Ezra was an orphan boy stealing to survive. Zeb is the last of his species or so he thinks. And Sabine is a betrayed mandalorian girl. Hell even Chopper has issues surviving his X-Wing crash on Hera's planet. If there's one thing I hope we see from ahsoka it's this realism of these characters. The fact that they all went through darkness but found light in the love and support they had for each other. It really is the antithesis of the old Jedi Order and the old sith order.

Sabinie is just absurd as a character. Building superweapons when under 15 is kinda of a stretch. Also being an expert ranged, mele, lightseber combatant, master engineer and artist under 18(Rebels) series shows that she simply got the new abilities handed to her as the story progressed. Props for not making her force sensitive tho

To be honest, I think it's actually kind of reasonable. She's probably got a similar force sensitivity to Han Solo, and look at all he accomplished with just that extra bit of "luck". Add that she was raised Mandalorian and suddenly her weapons proficiency and technological skills make a lot more sense.

I didn't think she looked like her enough, but it seems her appreciation and care for watching Rebels paid off. Despite not looking exactly like her, she has the same mannerisms, diction, and body language. It is almost eerie how I can close my eyes and perfectly imagine animated Sabine in her place.

I think one of the driving forces of Sabine living alone on Lothal was the death of her family, because when we see what happened to Mandolore in the Book of Boba Fett, we see how the Night of a Thousand Tears destroyed Mandolore. I think once news got out to rest of the galaxy, Sabine probably tried to look for her family, but couldn't because Mandolore (At least to the galaxy) was too dangerous to explore. I believe this was the catalyst as to why she stopped wearing her armor and the wedge that was driven between her and Ahsoka. At least, that's how I see it.
