This is a fun project that involves quite a few great techniques for working with PVC that can be of use in making many other PVC creations. The end result to this project is kid friendly and should last for many years.
The piston created in this project is a particularly useful design for many other projects. It's air tight in 2" PVC pipe and requires no special tools or modifications of off the shelve parts. It's pretty rare to see a design that works so well with so little customization.
Parts:
16" x 2" PVC Pipe
12" x 3/4" PVC Pipe
24" x 1 1/4" PVC Pipe
2" x 1 1/4" PVC Pipe
2" Coupling
2" x 3/4" Reducer
2" Threaded Female Adapter
2" x 1 1/2" Threaded Reducer
1 1/4" End Cap (x2)
1 1/4" Coupling
1 5/8" x 2" O Ring
1" L Bracket
Self Tapping Screws
Cooking Oil
Foam Pool Noodles (Brands with the narrowest core will fly furthest)
Craft Foam Sheets
Sand Paper
Hot Glue
PVC Primer & Cement
Liked before I watched. Thumbs up for rockets!
Come here often?
Came here for rockets, I was satisfied.
ERHMARGERD ITS GRANT!
OMG HES HERE IM SUBBED
Grant Thompson - "The King of Random" I subscribed to you
Don't let North Korea get their hands on this video. It would be a major step forward with their rocket technology.
Kyle 3 years later and it's still true
Finally, something for us Nerf fans. Definitely be building this for a war.
well hey there Walcom
I think a certain man wearing a beret will run this in a war.
remember this comment?
i could get an entire library of free books with the amount of people audible are sponsoring atm.
this guy is incredible he puts a lot of effort into his videos and they are always interesting
Thanks!
Your right he puts effort to his projects your very right!
Nice design so they fly straight, I like!
Nighthawkinlight is there any danger in using your negative ion generator shocker? By the way love your videos. You to Greek gadget guru.
Στην Ελλάδα πουλάνε τέτοιους σωλήνες;
I recommend planning this project in advance to be sure you can get all the supplies. We had trouble finding some of the pieces. You can't just pick up everything at Lowes or Home Depot, at least not in my neck of the woods. We had to go to a plumbing supply store. 2" O rings were VERY difficult to find. Also, our pool noodle inside hole dimension was too small. We are still trouble shooting to make everything work.
Very cool design! Love the gyro-stabilized rockets, well done.
-Ritchie
Why did no one reply to your comment your projects are cool too
Now THAT'S cool!
Not as cool as your projects.
KIPKAY!!!! :D
ERHMAGERD ITS KIPKAY
hey kipkay! can you make your own nerf pumpsnap? pls?
I've been watching your videos since i was 8 Kipkay
PVC pipes are hard to deal with and i admire your way of using them :D
He should make this into a business. Its a very good design.
MY EYE! MY EYE! IT HIT MY EYE!!!
hi love the videos
Put this comment on Why would you put that on the internet
That's detention for whoever did that!!
You should have modified sprinkler valve to block/release the air pressure created by the piston. The valve should be opened once the piston is fully inserted. This allows more pressure to build up so the rocket will launch once maximum pressure is reached. Rather than the rocket being propelled before the piston is full inserted.
You are always thinking, and encouraging me to think, too.
Thank you for sharing your amazing genius.
Dat spider at 0:43 going across da table doe
Slick! I really like how the plunger is made
Well I can't wait to build this for me and my granddaughter! Thanks! 😁
Please make a trigger released pvc blaster that shoots foam darts! Great vid!
Thank you for the project. The piston design is great. NOTE: I was compiling a shopping list for my local home supply store and did not see the 2" to 1 1/2 inch threaded male adapter to secure the piston in the chamber on the parts list in the description. Thanks again.
I love the lighting in this too!
I love how at 0:42 when you are panning along the materials it looks as though you are following a bug :D
I know, I had to put that in the video as soon as I saw it
the top half of bottles would be good on the end of the rockets as it would make them more aerodynamic :)
That's sweet I think that I might have to make a few of those with my air soft group. Great video I always like them
WOW! Fires like magic! If you use a tight pool noodle, it is super fast and powerful! I love the DIY-ness of it, and it was fun to make and play with. Thanks for another great project! Also, if you wrap a Nerf bullet tightly in duct tape so that it fits snugly into the barrel, it is another great lobbing projectile.
I love how the lady bug follows the camera (0:43)🐞😋
0:43 Who saw the spider invader?
Do you happen to watch RWBY?
Nice work NightHawk!!! Like this one a lot!
Why is that everything you say is in passive voice.
EXAMPLE: I dug a hole (active voice)
A hole is dug (passive voice)
Every single phrase I have heard you say has been in passive voice, Im almost impressed
I think it's so he can avoid saying "I" so much. If he says I too much it can make the viewer feel as though he is the only one who can do this. At least that's my theory.
Magneto! Yep, that's part of it.
Its also generally more professional sounding and, to me at least, the instructions are much clearer that way. And why are you almost impressed?
"I will start by gluing on..." from the start of the video :P
Don't get me wrong I love your videos, I just noticed
0:42 the bug on the table is like: "OOHH SSHHHIIIITTT!!! OOHH SSHHIIITTTT!!"
I'm totally making this for my next Nerf war! Thanks for this awesome vid, NightHawk!
NICE ONE! 0:40
0:45 that wittle bug at the bottom.... sorry caught my eye
"Oh this is going to be easy."
-Obi Wan Kenobi
from starwars episode 3
Just made one today. Works like a charm! Thanks so much!
If you have any Nerf Mega Darts, try and see how it fires them, since 3/4 in PVC and CPVC like the barrel is, has been known to have a good fit for them.
I came here through Kipkay's liked video on his recent activity....so when I first saw this, I was like "that's not Kipkay, who's that?" :D
I had one of those launchers as well like 10 years ago, awesome lol
I really enjoy your vids, keep it up!
The launcher would make a pretty good squirt gun too!
You probably don't want to lubricate with cooking oil -- it'll rot. Use something like silicone grease or Teflon lubricant -- something that won't eat whatever the o-ring is made of.
Also, I would still glue the barrel on the end even if it's a good friction fit, just to make sure that it's 100% air tight.
I wanted to use cooking oil because it's a kids toy so best to keep the synthetic lubricants that can be toxic or provoke allergies out of the mix. One of the reasons I didn't glue the barrel on is because I'm considering other uses for the body of the launcher that would exchange the barrel for different attachments. Those are good suggestions otherwise.
This is a really great gun, but I found a few issues...
At the hardware stores, some of those adapters are really hard to find, so you may need to be prepared to compromise by using multiple pieces of modifying other pieces to make them fit. Also, I used foam pipe insulator because I couldn't find any pool noodles this time of year and hot glue melted it, so try Gorilla Glue instead. Other than that, which is mostly just the hardware stores' faults, it is a great rocket launcher! Go NightHawkInLight!
A Quick hack: instead of using foam to fill in the hole of your rocket, just use a stick of dynamite! It works just as great and you'll rule the neighborhood even faster!
NightHawkInLight
Nice Knife! and awesome idea and i made on, its very effective.
Found you on Instructables! (We're next to each other on Play features) - very cool video! :)
Is it possible to add a spring to piston chamber to help it return to the pre-launch position?
Very cool launcher!
odd question, but what brand is the pvc pipes and parts?
a good idea could be to use one of those fitness / training giant rubber bands and wrap it around the piston part and somehow connect a trigger to release the piston to relieve stress and bam, rocket launcher! but no explosion :C
In the video were u make a cocoa lair pistol what could I use as a substitute for the galvinized steel gas vent tee cap
Is there anyway to modify these to be for airsoft? It would be a good mortar system.
Great FUN and great instructions
Hi, I love your videos, I am making this project but I just can't find the O-ring, can you tell me where you bought yours.
A hardware store will have one or be able to order one for you.
Your are a smart man ! Good job ! Keep it up !
Now just make a chamber in the nose end, pour in a few grams of flash powder, and leave a fuse out the nose...
Put the powder in a tightly sealed cardboard tube before putting it nose for even more fun.
@5:02: come on, was that REALLY the only knife you had available ? we don't need confirmation that you're badass !
I think it would be AWESOME if you did a projectile video with JoergSprave!
Nighthawkinlight, is your negative ion generator safe? I know it has the capability to ruin anything with a computer chip, but could it hurt the user or people around the user?
is there any way to put a tip on the rockets to make them more aerodynamic
Hey Nighthawk, love your channel! Question though, comparing this build to your hairspray PVC Rocket Launcher build, which gains the most altitude? I know the hairspray rocket has a bit more mass, but does the fueled launch compensate with a higher launch? I'm trying to decide which to start gathering supplies for. Thanks bud!
The hairspray rocket launches higher, but you could get nearly as high with this if you used really tight fitting rockets. This also can fire more rockets way faster. The hairspray launcher takes about 20 seconds between shots to air out the chamber. It would also hurt a lot more to get hit by so I wouldn't recommend launching it at people.
NightHawkInLight Thanks for the input! I totally want planning at aiming it at people, just something for my buddies and I to do one of these summer nights hahaha! Great work, keep up the awesome videos! If you'd like I'll upload my results!
Anybody know if/how I should paint this? I am afraid that it might make the piston too tight, so should I just paint it with the piston pushed all the way in?
Cool
hi i love your videos
Micah Seibert who doesnt?
Alltime10s REALLY COOL VIDZ
You are really fantasy full. You're smart and good. Inspiring
What if the core is narrower than the barrel? Im having issues fitting the rockets and would like advice on how to widen the core
Rather than widening the core, taper the end of the barrel with sand paper or a file so it can squeeze in. A tight core is good and will make the rockets fly further.
I was expecting something along the lines of a nerf artillery gun (with two wheels and a blast shield like *actual* artillery cannons) but this is cool too
Nicely done!
4:45 rockets looking real nice, btw are you using 2 inch diameter or bigger? also how big is the hole in the pool noodles?
nice echo effect in the end :)
the o ring seems hard to find do u have od/id for it plz
Can you get all of the pipe fitting at home Depot? I dont think ace would carry them all.
Where can I find the 3/8" wall O-ring?
Wonderful as always!
This is something that Grant Thompson - "The King of Random" would do.
Eye of the Forest used to do*
Wat kind of knife did u use to cut the foam
Can you get all of the pvc pipes at home depot? If not, where would you recommend?
Maddie Rule Lowes has PVC fittings as well as Home Depot. Certain stores will sometimes have parts that other stores don't have so make sure to visit more than one store if you can't find certain fittings.
0:44 insect: Ooh I'm in a video :3 yay
XD leaving the other three hands to reload more rockets
*"...leaving the other (hand) free..."
What would happen if you made it smaller? Would the rockets fly father or not as far due to their being less air in the chamber?
This is every Amtgarders dream :D
can i use any substitutes instead of foam. it is very tough to find foam noodles in kuwait i guess
Any tips for finding the o-ring? Haven't been able to find one nearly that big at the local places. Any ideas for an alternate if I can't find one?
You should be able to find one online if you look up the dimensions provided in the video description, or their metric equivalent.
NightHawkInLight Found that by searching for o-ring 326 you results for this size. Seems they may be available at some auto parts stores.
Although this has nothing to do with the video,( it was great as always though), how is your hair so fantastic?
Do you think a smaller version might be able to make
Looks like a fun projects.
onder if its possible to put 3 or 4 barrels for the rockets
might lose power put raining foam onto people would be great
Hey could you also use silicone grease instead of cooking oil?
have a nice day kids!
I built one of these but the piston is hard to push and there is a squeaking noise whenever I push it. Do I need more vegetable oil lubrication?
Yes, more lube.
Thanks it works a lot better now.
NightHawkInLight Thats what she said
+fatcookie1000 use industrial lubes such as lithium or silicone or even teflon lube as they do not rot and they are rubber safe.
Where did you get that size of O ring
Is there a name for a pump that releases its pressure in a burst?
what is then name of the knife you used to cut the pool noodles in the video
The Count of Monte Cristo was reimagined into a great anime called Gankutsuou. Just spreading the word.
What if you added a switch or something that shoots bb pellets to make this a mortar
I am also aware that you post your parts in the video description, I think we might've found it on Amazon but we figured we would check with you first, could you help us out?
Have you read/listened to Neal Stephenson baroque cycle?
thanks once again for another great upload :)
make the nose of the rocket conical and make it front heavy. They will never fly, nose backward also may increase the range and accuracy
AND LET THE WILD RUMPUS BEGIN!!!
i like how you use disc golf baksets as targets
Awesome job!
What's the overall length on this?
I made two according to the specs and the Rockets go maybe 3 ft. The chamber seals the only thing I can thing of if the 1-1/4 end cap (piston ) is domed versus flat. I even adjusted the foam buffer. Any suggestions?
Are the rockets not a very tight fit over the barrel?
NightHawkInLight Actually I think this might be the problem.
It's the same diameter as the barrel.
It's a pretty simple thing, I'm not sure what could be going wrong. Maybe you're not pulling the plunger back all the way? Or you have an air leak?
NightHawkInLight I'm gonna try to use a smaller diameter noodle and tightening the gap. I agree it's a pretty simple tool
What's that knife you used to cut the foam?
