Tycoon games originated with games like RollerCoaster Tycoon (RCT) and Railroad Tycoon and the word 'tycoon' stuck as a genre even into 2024. These games are simulation games, but they aren't just life sim or logistical sims, they specifically are about starting and running a business, making money, accumulating wealth, and building a wealthy company.

Always impressed by your ability to find games that I’ve never heard of even though the games are right up my alley
Thanks! I spend a lot of time researching and curating. After 10 years I'm pretty good at it.
Thank you for featuring Tavern Keeper! 🍻
It looks fun, but the weird arms are a big turnoff for me. They just don't make sense.
@@GeekRedux
It's the classic fantasy race "Half-raymans".
Looks shit
Game Dev Tycoon - one of the first games I ever bought from indie developers. Still playing it from March 21, 2016….
Tavern Keeper is made by the people behind Game Dev Tycoon.
GDT was a very, very smooth and polished experience, albeit it's a much simpler game than a tavern manager, so I really hope they can produce the same quality when it gets more complex. Of all of the myriads of tavern games flooding in, this one is the most promising for me.
We really appreciate your support! 💚
Thanks for the warning. Anyone that themselves uploads a pirated copy of their game then crys it is getting pirated will not be getting my money. Especially when it was nothing but a PR stunt that got them hundreds of thousands of dollars of free press.
I'm in love with all these new categories/genre videos! Amazing job!
Thank you! When I started the lists I did 12 genres, cut it to 5-6 because of workload. This time I wanted to go back to doing a lot of them.
"Alchemical" ... I learned a new word today. Thanks Zakh.
Number 6 i fell in love with it as soon as i saw footage months ago, really looking forward to it!
I played Big Ambitions for some time in Juny (around 20 hours), so decided to share my opinion on it. It is a very promising and interesting mix of life and business sim/sandbox, and has a large potential for long, tens-hours long playthrough.
The biggest problem yet is the obvious (and honestly totally expected from early access) lack of item/shop variety (it is still definitely enough to game being in totally playable state, but after you realize how much more could be added you just eager for more and more stuff to be added)). The last patch 0.3 added few more goods/shops/items and some QoL features, so it seems that developers are pushing it into right direction, but there is still long road ahead. Haven`t encountered any bugs or technical difficulties, but game balance is a little bit off.
Will be waiting for full release and may be replaying it once every few patches during early access to see how much progress they have made.
That one is pretty interesting to start, but the driving is absolutely horrible. You have to hit w 2-3 times after getting in before the car will move, parallel parking when the steering wheel only has all the way left or right, the accelerator is either not pressed at all or floored, and the breaks barely slow the car at all... the car i was given to start with was destroyed within 2 weeks.
Also, if you park in a spot that is paid parking that price is per hour.
"promising" and "potential". The chorus of early access games. Overwhelmingly positve expectations on steam.
EA 0.4 upgrade out from Dec2023 is another huge step forward for Big Ambitions, with driving much smoother for a start. The development of the early game means it is a bit more challenging now, with mid-game improving all the time as the selection of stores and items grows and the economic dynamics are adjusted behind the scenes to keep a better balance for players.
Try again now as it will be different from any games played before the upgrade.
@@bobinscotland thanks for the heads up. I'll give it another run soon.
Might of Merchants is definitely something for my wishlist.
Might of Merchants is one man trying to make his own version of The Guild. Only for that, I must wishlist it.
Lots of potential, which is to say, I'm uncertain whether the games can live up to the expectations. Might of Merchants definitely looks like a standout to me. I feel like a strong vision is what makes one-man projects shine. So hopefully I'm not wrong.
Great to see so much fresh take on tacoon game !
I was like "nah, this is not list for me" followed by instantly adding first two games into wishlist :) Thanks for the list
Haha I find there's always a couple games everyone would be into in ever genre. Just gotta hit that right style and vibe.
8 wasn't wishlisted, fixed, thank you )
and thanks for the store links!
Glad you found some new ones!
I don't think I've ever wishlisted so many games in such short succession XD Thanks Zakh! Always appreciate your research. I just hope they tone down a certain """physics""" simulation in Nivalis a bit, it honestly just looks ridiculous atm.
Glad you found some new ones!
Me and my brother are working on a hotel simulation game, one of our first meetings was literally "you see this game Hotel Magnate, yeah, this is the perfect example of everything I do not want our game to be"
I think Food truck empire will scratch my itch of Lemonade Tycoon. Even tough it's a very simple game, I miss a spiritual sucessor till this day
There is one being developed. I have it wishlisted on steam.
Ooh, one of my favourite genres!
I'm looking forward to Food Truck Empire, News Tower, Yakuza Empire, Townseek and most of all Nivalis. I kind of want a Privateer kind of business game. Or perhaps an ocean trading kind of game.
for me that first game, Potion Tycoon looks most appealing.
Thanks for the video, got some good games for my watchlist from it!
Hotel Magnate was looking like a Two Point game at first glace but the time schedule kept me from buying.
I played definitely not fried chicken over a year ago, and that was pretty good. Lots of stuff to do, and it was challenging.
Woah, almost all of these look interesting. Amazing.
The Big Ambitions looks great. It's kind of reminding me Tycoon City New York how you could build any of hundreds of different businesses and decorate them by your taste 😃 Definitey give it a try
Big Ambitions has more gameplay than Tycoon City New York had, and graphics are good although limited on the outside of stores, made up for by the total flexibility inside every store. You'll like the developing game as it grows along with the many suggestions from the users.
I might be a grumpy old man, but none of them look remotely interesting to me. I think 2024 is not a great year for tycoon games. most of them looks like rip offs of older gamers but with another "theme" stick on it. I've watch most of your previous videos so I know I get can hyped from smaller games like these sometimes. but not this year it seems. this is in no way a critic of your selection, you picked what was available.
No worries, what kind of tycoon games do you like?
I thought you were a grumpy old man then I watched the video
Agree dude
@@strange_disasterttv2967same 😭😭
Other than the food truck one, the rest all look pretty bad and uninteresting
Now I am interested on that last one, Nivalis.
Any chance of you playing the Nebuchadnezzar DLC? I got the base game recently and was impressed how much they improved compared to early reviews. My only complaint was the slow pacing of early campaign missions, so maybe the DLC can provide some interesting challenges
Big Ambitions is pretty solid. I have put way more hours than I would like to admit. Lots of content updates.
Man I love you content
Thank you for this list.
Glad you enjoyed it!
Yakuza empire looks solid
Here's one for the stupid algorithm! Your work is very much appreciated, TY
Thank you!
Thanks!
Thank you )
Great video
Thanks!
I love the genre and I play a lot of early access games, but particularly in this category of games I feel too many either completely overpromise and never manage to make it to a level classic tycoon games managed, or they stay small and contained and are within that perhaps of better quality but not really what I want from a tycoon game. And frankly all the early access promises sometimes can get quite tiresome.
I need something like Transport Fever 3.
Wish I could play a Fantasy Guild sim. Where I run a guild, recruit warriors and send them on quests, clear territories from monsters etc.
There are a few of them on mobile, but all are filled with microtransactions required to advance without spending months staring at a wall.
Try Majesty: the Fantasy Kingdom Sim. Pretty similiar to what you are looking for
Hello GamerZakh. Try to play and make a video on the Building Company Tycoon game too
I have magical mixture mill
I like it, tis fun -- it does not take itself seriously at all
Pretty sure I bought it because of Zakh's review
I do like how that's turning out. All it has to do is deliver on what it's promising haha, sometimes harder than expected.
Might of merchants gives me Caravaneer 2 vibes
I'm really hoping Tavern Keeper is great, they announced that back in 2014.. the wait has been painful 💀
I ain't into games if I'm being honest with myself, but I really appreciate you taking the time to collect so many cool games. I have played Sims 4 before and I'm pretty sure that game isn't for me. It seems more like a game aimed at girls, in my opinion. You have to go through so much daily routine and it's just boring for me.
I do think I'll try out some of games on your list.. Maybe my opinion about sims-games will change.
thank you!
Glad you enjoyed it! If you're not a regular gamer, my advice is always to find a game with a theme that you're into outside of games. Like if you love history, try historical games. If you like cooking, try the cooking themed games. Regardless of gameplay genre, it's much easier to enjoy a game if it links to what you already love.
I like your advices and I will really try them out. I love reading books, so I have wanted to try The Witcher 3 since 2020 when I read the books about him. But I haven't had a computer that can run the game. Tomorrow, I am gonna buy my first gaming PC, so I think I'll enjoy exploring the world of The Witcher 3.@@GamerZakh
despite how fun the game is to play and how great it looks, literally everyone is expecting the publisher to completely ruin the game with its business decisions. Here’s to hoping they learn from mistakes (probably won’t)
I need you to play GORD on Sandbox!! Best it!! Then do Definitely Not Fried Chicken in a week when it drops.
Is gord any good? It looked interesting but the reviews weren't great.
yakuza looks hype to me
I think it missing one indie game name mall craze that have potential and have mixed rating
There are SO many tavern and potion games by now.
Whenever something works other people want to give it a shot too. It usually means we get more good games even if not all make it.
Even more proof that 99% of people aren’t even a little creative.
@@ninja_tony Generally it doesn't matter. I just found out that Pong was literally a stolen clone from Magnavox. No one knows what it copied though, everyone just thinks Pong was the start gaming.
Nivalis would have been right up my alley - but not a fan of "realistic" pixel art - seems like an odd combination
It's a new art style that we're seeing a lot of recently, especially since Valheim blew up. I'm calling it 'mid-poly', because it's not quite as basic as low-poly but it's not high-poly either. I find it's trying to tap into the early-00s/PS2-era kind of graphics which are nostalgic for a certain generation. You see it in the System Shock Remake and my next list has a LOT of games that use it.
I would like to try one of these to improve my business acumen. I'm not sure what kind of business I would like to go into but I feel like this could help. Does anyone have a recommendation as to which simulation game may be best?
Hmm business games rarely work exactly like real life but they can help with your business sense and the basics. I would actually say system-building games help your thinking the most because of the need for organisation and constant cause and effect, so games like Factorio and Cities Skylines.
@@GamerZakhyeah I wish running a business was as easy as in games 😂
Big Ambitions will certainly give you an idea on how to MAXIMISE profits, but the easy bank loans mean you lose the reality of starting a business... no-one lends to new starts unless they have some funding of their own that they stand to lose, and have crafted a brilliant BUSINESS PLAN before approaching a bank, showing them how you plan to stabilise then grow a new business in today's markets.
What is the aquarium game at 0:03?
That would be from Megaquarium.
Anyone knows that game at 0.08 seconds with the boxes on the conveyor belts? Kinda looks like the Big Pharma game, one of my favorites.
That's Software Inc, an older tycoon game that got quite popular but it's been in 'early access' for like 8 years haha.
@@GamerZakh ahhh, thanks GamerZakh. I will check it out.

Hi gamerzakh, you forget to mention openttd . Yes i know its an older game.
Forget it? It's actually shown in the video lol. But why would you want it in a list of upcoming 2024 games?

food truck empire is not released yet
It's a good thing this list is about next year.
NIVALIS ⚡⚡⚡⚡⚡⚡⚡⚡
Cloudpunk is really good excited for this one
sadly i searched the games and was not on my playstore....
All these games look like they borrowed the fortnite color palette and valheim's textures. I don't think this is gonna be good for the genre. Too much cartoon for a genre that appeals mostly to a mature audience. But anyways maybe big ambitions for me. To each their own
Greenheart 💚
NO! This is 8 months old video. Title should say 2023!
It's an upcoming games list. I'm sure you've seen those before.
@@GamerZakh Ok good. My bad.
Hi, good game called Building Company Tycoon
Having the intro be almost entirely Software Inc and then not mentioning it in the video is just cruel.
I listed software Inc for years. Including it at all right now is a show that I recognise its popularity, but I'm not listing it as an upcoming game anymore.
True, early access for 8 years is a tad excessive.
Underwhelming... the big days of the tycoon games are over. Sad to say.
This is for a single year, if you're thinking back to the big days, you're likely thinking of 5-10 years of games. It's a common problem, we look back and all the good games stand out and we don't realise it's 2 decades of stuff. Look forward 1 year and it seems terrible in comparison.
Might of Merchants and the yakuza, the rest are meh.

stop with retro
When there's no retro, people say "new games suck, devs should just do what works". When devs do what works, people say "there's no innovation, devs should do something new". And cycle, endlessly, forever.
Da ist überhaupt kein tyccon Spiel dabei!!! Big ambitions ist das einzige der rest ist nur Schrott
Everyone has their favourite.
We're done I'm affraid. Tycoon games died ages ago. No one should buy games with this kind of graphics.
Well tons of people buy games with this kind of graphics. Factorio, Rimworld, Prison Architect. Massively popular. Done for you but not everyone else.
@@GamerZakh yeah, that's a pitty. Back in our days, we'd never bother with these crap. They spend a month to make a "game", and idots buy it...
@@thessalonician Back in our day? We totally bothered with crap. I regular go back and play 90s games. So much of what we loved would not pass today. 90s games are filled with bugs, performance issues, balance problems, tedious design, terrible graphics, and more. 90s games were also often rushed in a few months and forced out by publishers, some publishers who never even checked what was developed, they just sold it anyway. Plus marketing crap like misleading box art, lies in game descriptions, and manuals that were just incorrect because the manual was written before the game was finished and they never actually finished the game.
We accepted so much crap in the 90s because there was nothing better.
@@GamerZakh crap like... Rollercoaster Tycoon, Theme Hospital, Railroad Tycoon, Lords of the Realm II, Simcity 3000, Red Baron II, FS98, F22, Populus II, etc. These games had awesome graphics for their era!
@@thessalonician You're listing just the best games and your games span 8 years of gaming. That's like just picking the very best and best looking games from the last 8 years all the way back to 2016. So like saying, "Baldur's Gate 3, Red Dead Redemption 2, Anno 1800, Doom Eternal, Frostpunk, and Elden Ring."
This list is 1 year and looking ahead. 1/8th the timeframe you just used and without the benefit of hindsight.
Nostalgia goggles hides what the era was really like. It happened to me too, but also I don't know at what point people forgot Shaq Fu? Or Trespasser, labelled "The worst game of 1998"? People remember Caesar 3 and Pharaoh without the massive game breaking bugs... Everyone remembers StarCraft but no one remembers WarBreeds. C&C sure, War Inc no.
Boring
What kind of tycoon games do you like?
All are shit games
What tycoon game do you like? Because if you can't find a single game you like you probably just don't like tycoon games in general.
While all these games are all well and good, none of them are better than Drug Wars on the TI-88
SO EPIC
I HAVE NO MONEY!!
I think we can all conclude that the Tycoon genre is dying slowly
I don't think we can conclude that at all. Plenty of tycoon games in the 90s failed, you just don't remember them. Every year people say "X genre is dying" and it then proceeds to have one of the biggest hits of the year. "RPG is dying", Baldur's Gate 3. "City building is dying", Cities Skylines.
