You don’t have to be a fan of Drew to see she is a genuinely kind hearted intelligent woman. She’s absolutely lovely.
Dave too. Really genuine stuff.
Well, wouldn't that make anyone a fan?
Watch when she Interviews Paris. Hot effing mess. Do better drew
In my head: "E.t. Charlie's angels she's not that much older than me, wow she looks old." Pause and realization. "Omg I'm old 😭? When???"
Have loved her since 50 first dates haha
Watching Drew now you’d never know she was a wild child. She has such a good heart tho and considering how tough her childhood was I am so glad that she came out on the right side. Strong woman ❤️
So, so true, she was outta there, she redeemed herself and now is on top of her own world.
Not alot of celebrities have done that, but alot have, Robert Downey JR, for instance.
She probably still is behind doors
ehhh... i think it's pretty obvious she's got a wild side to her
I think her fame from the early films lead to her troubles. Rushed into it too early.
@@alanvallazza9781 famous with parents who didn't care enough to protect her.
Dave just slid back into the host spot so effortlessly here,I'm glad I lived through his entire run on tv,what a gem.
As one of the three people who remember and was stunned by his afternoon show, I have to say he’s a marvelous entertainer.
No! He was a crass egotistical SOB who ridiculed his guests for a laugh.
@@ejohnson3131 exactlyyy I can't BELIEVE he didn't get ANY consequences for his hideous actions! He's a misogynist and a sexist a hole.
@@emiliawilson4378 No. You're just a snowflake.
Love Dave
Kudos to Savannah Guthrie for sitting back and allowing David and Drew do their thing. A pro move.
Agree, such grace by her here - very professional!
Yeah, wish she would have done that with Trump.
It was awkward but sweet how Drew tried to draw Savannah back in by tacking her onto the tail end of all her praise of Letterman by saying "I love you guys." 😆
Matt Lauer > Savannah Guthrie
@Bruce Wayne Trump is vile she was just trying to do her job.
Love what Drew said about Letterman fully embracing the moment Drew went up on that table. Allowing her to just be, without shaming. Just straight humor and love. I get it, Drew... And the wanting to reciprocate that openness and acceptance of people freely being themselves.
She worded that beautifully
Well, he was an entertainer and he was a man happy to see boobs. I think she's giving him too much credit. He was just a patriarch enjoying a little peep show! Of course, he'd not admonish her...
Dave fully embraced her flashing her teats.
Yeah right. Fully being vulgar. She says she didn’t plan it. She was propelled by something….yeah. True.
"without shaming " i cant believe im hearing this non sense, if a man flashes a woman hes arrested for harassment, she should at least be kicked out of the show and never return.
Listening to Dave talk. I think he misses being on television. He delivers so well and with so much patience and impact. Not to take anything away from Drew. But Dave seems to be in his element.
I'm not sure if it's even television that he misses; I think he just really enjoys talking to people. That's why I really love the Netflix show, he has such in-depth personal conversations with his guests.
He has a Netflix show .....
He's still on television if you have Netflix.
I miss him being on television, especially compared to his know-it-all, stuck up replacement SC.
He's a master
She’s down to earth, intelligent, she’s grown so much emotionally, she’s aging gracefully... she’s just all around someone I admire despite that she’s a celebrity.
I always like drew and the rest of the Barrymore's great actors
She turned out surprisingly well considering all the child stars that go off the deep end when Hollywood spits them out.
Her wild times in the 80s and 90s
Drew is a nice host and overcame so much.
She had went through hell before she was in her 20s. She was like mentally 45 at 21.
In 2022 its SA
I miss David, it was great seeing how he pretty much took control and almost turned it into a interview of Drew. Just shows that his talent is natural and real.
Dave is great in front of the screen, but not as a regular guy!
Ask the residence of Montana where he lives!
@@michaelvandyke6715 Nobody's perfect.
I miss Letterman, too.
@@michaelvandyke6715 The residence?
"Humanity is temporary." Best quote ever.
So damn true though
That's a sad truth 😔 but I think you're right about that
Yes!! How true is that statement
Dave knows. The older you get, the more stark this actuality becomes to you.
I am seriously getting old that feels like just yesterday. Drew has always come off at any age as such a genuine, kind, sweet, beautiful woman. Such a great moment in tv history.
For sure. I remember it being on the magazines the next day lol. Within my friends it was hey did you see letterman last night and we're talking about it. That was how you found stuff out still. Doesn't it always feel like yesterday? I can't grasp time. It's baffling. Will say those times were awesome back then. I don't care what anyone says. Drew looks better and better with age. You can sense that she is herself on screen.
🙄🤢💩
I watched that when it was first aired. Feels very recent, but then you realize how young David looked compared to now (Drew hasn't aged much has she? :D )
Agreed. She's a cute, kind, individual. Genuine.
So true. Even in her earlier wild year's she was sweet while dealing with her demons. I bet David is very happy to see how far she's come. David was handsome back then, he still is. He looks good for 74. 💗
I remember watching this on Letterman that night. At the time, Drew had a 'wild child' reputation, so when it happened, I wasn't surprised. If anything, to me, it came off as wild, but cute gesture. Had she faced the audience, maybe the reaction would have been different, but it was all for David, and in previous interviews, he had always treated Drew with kindness. I'm so proud to witness the woman she has become. Beautiful inside and out.
I am so proud of the woman Drew has become. She has endured so many things and is such an incredible woman.
46 yrs. old, and she has a child like face , a sweet personality and truly nice to look at. Rare from a child star / start.
“Later I was thinking...oh jeez, now what if she goes and does this on Leno’s show? Then I’ll really be upset”
Gotta love Dave with the Leno burns even after all of these years 💀
+
It wasn't a Leno burn. It was saying that he thought it was something special for him and it would be crushing if it turned out that it was something she does on late night shows. If Merv Griffin was still on the air, it easily could've been a Merv reference.
@@mikestevenson576 I think he would favour Leno for a joke like that because the sense of competition over the Tonight Show and the resulting competition between Leno's Tonight Show and Letterman's Late Show make that a significant reference.
What she has overcome is astonishing. She is so compassionate and real.
"Come to my funeral" omg so much honesty and humor in that line... brilliant. Dave is a legend, even if he ticked off many in years... he'll always be a legend
That was a great line. Not a big fan of his but he has his moments.
If Letterman ticked someone off, it's on them, not Dave.
3 legends on that stage! And one grand daughter of HOLLYWOOD ROYALTY!!!
Love your channel!
Dave is a creep
"Come to my funeral", only Dave can say that and not sound morbid
It's appropriate considering how close they were, but that sounds like an alternate Warren Zevon CD title
When you reach a certain age you get to be morbid about your own demise.
its beautiful that she appreciates still that he didnt make fun of her, and shes kept the same vibe going. just let people be let the moment unravel, as long as youre not harming anyone then just have fun and let others do the same.
Dave somehow manages to show up and instinctively starts to interview Drew on her own show. 😄
“I’ve lost control of the class.” 🤣
I remember when she flashed him on the show. That was a huge deal, and everyone talked about it at school.
When David calls you true friend, you know that you're doing something right in your life
"You said this moment was okay."
"It was a moment of connection for the rest of our existence here."
Two great comments from each.
She gets up on furniture so easily. LMFAO. Like even in those heels she just stepped into that table like it was nothing.
After 35 years, I just fell back in love with Drew Barrymore. She was fantastic on Stern.
"Do I leave?"
Asked Dave, a man almost singlehandedly redefines late night, on whether he should stay on set. Quip like this defines Letterman. Unrivaled sharp wit.
I just loved her since ET. She is a talented actress and director, creative, intelligent, hilarious and seems humble. Loved her in 50 First Date amongst the rest of her films and interviews.
I love Drew so much. There’s never been a version of Drew Barrymore that wasn’t endearing and kind hearted. I’m lucky enough to have crossed paths with her a bit in the 80s and 90s as a fellow child actor in LA. So happy she has found her groove and is happy and well. She’s a constant inspiration.
Wow, this is really just people who like each other having a good conversation. Beautiful. Beautiful.
She will always have that childlike smile and gaze with her wide eyes. When I look at Drew and hear her voice it brings a smile to my face.
"Dave do you remember anything about that?" "Well, a couple of things..."
Exactlt 2 things. Lol
I’m frequently struck by the miracle that Drew is here now and didn’t spiral off the deep end and never recover or survive.
🌎🥰💙✌🏽
I saw that episode the night it aired, I was almost as surprised as Dave was lol. Drew is cool, always has been and Dave is Dave, it doesn't get cooler than that
I also vividly remember this. I was obsessed with Drew as a young adult. Her birthday is just a few days before my own and she is just a couple years old than me. She was kind of a role model to me. I remember in that moment thinking she kind of embodied what we all should be. Free.
Right on. I totally agree.
@@moniquejones6482
Loved her since ET, and no matter age, Drew is still the CUTEST, prettiest girl in the limelight....and her personality brings out her beauty....evermore!!!!!!!!!
I remember that show as well. I was concerned that she was about to go spiraling completely out of control and not be able to recover. I am so proud of her.
I saw that episode live as well and was as surprised! I was so glad for Dave's reaction.
I remember watching that specific David Letterman show. Drew is going to be so adorable when she gets older like Goldie Hawn.
She has such a genuine heart and Dave feels like an uncle. I always watched his show with my Dad. Such beautiful memories.
In a timely when every little mistake is getting people cancelled - it’s genuinely heartwarming to see you talk about the kindness of allowing people to make mistakes, and to speak about it with such love and good faith.
Thank you, I had genuinely given up on all of Hollywood only to have my faith rekindled by something seemingly so small.
I feel like this is three interviewers interviewing each other. Who was the host? 😂
No matter where he is Dave is the host.
Dave all day everyday 🗣✍🏻
If you're serious, this is from Drew's show.
@@jasonlieberman4606 Yeah, you missed the point. Bravo.
I thought it was great. They were having a conversation.
I love Drew.....she's America's SWEETHEART!!!! Just a pure, beautiful person.....we need MORE Drew's in this world for sure!!!!
I love Drew!! She’s a true gem in the industry!! She hasn’t changed one bit. Big beautiful personality, genuine strong woman! You can feel her heart when she speaks. I’m proud of her making it being a child actor..She made it through with class!!
Drew has seriously lived in her years on earth. She went through things in childhood that would have destroyed some grown adults. But thankfully she got away from it and back on the right track. Always been a fan and I'm glad to see her doing so well.
Letterman will always be the coolest cat in the room.
👊 100%
@Critique Everything - Absolutely.
David Letterman is a pervert...going with his young female interns...METOO should have dealt with him....and he looks HORRIBLE!
David Letterman is one of the only good hearted people left on tv. He is honest and takes accountability for his shortcomings. He’s not a judgmental dope trying to use someone elses mistake as their own stepping stone.
@Critique Everything agree. total non talent douchbag
Dave is the best...I watched him from his very first show until he signed off...love him!! I saw the original airing of Drew's moment on the desk as well. It was one of those special moments in time that anyone watching, knew would connect the two of them forever. He is truly a treasure!! 🧡
Wow.. That's amazing that you experienced that whole journey. He's a cool guy. So glad that he's still a live and well.
Yes! I watched this back when it originally aired, too.
Ive had a crush on Drew since I was 9 years old back in the 80s, thats still going strong. She has to be one of the most genuinely sweet and loving person on the planet.
I'm beyond thrilled that this darling girl survived and is still with us today.
Happy birthday Drew 🎂
What a wonderful reminder of just how freaking intelligent & human & therapeutic Dave is....better with age!!!♥️
I worked with Drew on Riding in Cars with Boys! She is so sweet, down to earth and talented!
WOW! I have been a witness to Drew and Dave's on-air relationship and it nearly brought me to tears because I know how much respect they have for one another. During these times when we lose so much personal contact to see this was beautiful.
On that note, reach out to someone you have lost contact with. Try to have a safe, heartwarming reconnection to uplift not only yourself but other people in these dire times.
Think positive. Be safe AND smart. And let's all move forward to try and get back to 'normal'.
Drew flashing Dave was a fun, spur of the moment thing. No need to go so deep and philosophical about it imo. Dave enjoyed every second of it, why would she think he would be upset about it. Didn't hurt ratings I'm sure. A memorable moment.
I’d not thought about how it could have gone differently. Its true, what if Dave was upset over it. Had her escourted out. Some hosts could be scared or upset over it. I have always liked Dave and remember his first daytime show! He was in his best years when Drew had her moment on his show.
@@AllenFreemanMediaGuru What guy is going to act that way though? I mean come on...NO, there was no chance that would happen.
@Josephine B wtf?? An abusive freak, where does that come from? And if this were true, how does they apply to this story?
nanosecond
It's kind of like Miley Cyrus syndrome momentarily. A former child star has to rebel sexually to show to the public that she is no longer a child. Or it could just be a Hollywood thing ;)
Funny how David can go into interview mode even as a guest. 🤣😂. This was cute. ❤️
He really can’t help it can he? lol
But can someone help him with his mid life crisis beard and hipster glasses 😂 he’s like 100 what a creep
l de He's been wearing those glasses for over 20 years. He's had the beard since he retired. Anymore things you want to complain about? Wanna show us your wardrobe so we can criticize your style?
@@cactaceous hahah yeah wrong good try he’s a perv that’s why he’s trying to be young and get with young chicks his time is over it’s gross he’s an old man. And yeah I’m not on tv trying to broadcast myself stop trying to find out what I’m wearing you weirdo
@@lde2709 haha "his time is over", you can't be serious 🤣 so you get to dictate who's time is over? Geez, the level of ego and hatred in that statement is scary. Get help.
Kills me when she's talking about her daughters... "Let me just get you set up for life before I throw you in" Wow. Would have been nice if her parents had done that for her. I think she's a really good person.
Dave was one of my many inspirations I chose television and film as a career. I even had a cake at my high school open house just before college, with a caricature of Dave holding my own Top 10 list. I worked in TV for 18 years, but I’ve never had quite the moments that this show did over the years. I’d have absolutely loved to have worked for Dave. I think we have similar senses of quirky irreverent humor, and I’m originally from the Midwest too. I just get him. Only the first 8 years or so of my career were really comfortable, with the next 10 being a see-saw of freelancing with full time work, being out of work, freelancing with partial work, struggling, and most recently and for a long time being unemployed. I’m now 44 and have pretty much lost all hope, but I wish I could have worked on Letterman. It just would have clicked. Drew is another who I grew up with, almost in the same generation. From an early age, Steven Spielberg was and still is my favorite director. So obviously I first was aware of Drew in E.T. like most others. I know she’s had highs and lows, but she’s been one of those celebrities who has always been around who I feel like I know.
It was GREAT seeing Dave again! I love him so much! ❤️😘
I was just admiring that couch myself.
I like the coffee table as well
The look on Dave's face in that moment was perfect: "Deer-in-the-headlights" (pardon the pun), tongue-in-cheek/that's-something-you-don't-see-everyday sorta expression. So many years later and able to laugh about it because it was genuinely amusing.
Considering the atrocities that Drew suffered as a child star, one could understand why she hasn't put her children through it
Interesting 75 people can affirm the use of the word atrocities in this context.
Fantastic segment. I've always loved Drew, and she's really grown as a person over the years.
I remember that! I love Drew, she's so down to earth. I think she really enjoyed seeing and talking with Dave again and was touched that he stopped by on her birthday. Happy Birthday Drew!
She was a wild child and now she’s the most proper, sweet, and innocent woman.

I do remember watching Letterman every night during the period after 9/11 when the tension and anxiety out in the world was palpable. Dave’s show was a great refuge during those times. Poking fun at all the seriousness of the War on Terror. Great laughs.

She’s only a year older than me lol
@The Time is Now That kid is still in there, it's just wrapped up in an adult body.. lol

I still can't get over Dave with the bushy beard and basically no hair on top. His hair used to be so wild and curly.
He's flipping the hair script, like older men do. Crown to chin. "When you get old, your hair grows less on top, and more everywhere else." Dave turned it up one step further so it's as plain as the beard on his face.
The hair migrated from head to chin.
We could have just spent a couple minutes having a chuckle at Drew’s wild years. Instead we get slammed with an insight that had us all wondering how we could be kinder in the face of awkward spontaneity. Didn’t sign up for it, but I’ll take it...
This is so great. 3 amazing people. Drew is the best, what a life she’s had.
Always loved Drew.
I love what she said about what she learned from David that show, to treat others with grace. Both class acts
I saw Drew Barrymore at a Dodger game in 1995, which is right around the same time as the Letterman appearance. She had the same hairstyle.. She was about 15 rows ahead of me in the upper right field section.
Just a class act. Drew is one of my most favorite people. She's an amazing human.
Always loved Dave. Always loved Drew. Two lovely people
I can't believe I've been in this relationship for 25 years and with Drew, since childhood. This was so delightful to watch. Love David's wisdom on how we should be treating each other, especially during such devastating times.
