Following reported sightings of a UFO in Mullinahone, Carrick-on-Suir in 1969, ‘Newsbeat’ visits the area and meets some of the locals who claim to have witnessed these extraterrestrials.
Reporter Cathal O’Shannon meets Kathleen and John Shelly, and Ellen O’Donnell from Carrick-on-Suir, who all claim to have seen a UFO. John Shelly describes the hovering mass of light that they witnessed as they drove along the road.
It looked like a cloud with two lights shining out of it but they weren’t flashing on and off as you would see in an aeroplane.
Frightened of what she had seen as the object descended from the sky, Kathleen remained in the car as John investigated further before being beckoned back to the car by his wife. They discuss possible alternatives to what it might have been, possibly a meteorological balloon or bog mist. John Shelly is keeping an open mind.
The Shelly’s were not the only ones to make claims of this odd sighting. An hour and a half after the Shelly’s claim to have seen this strange object Ellen O’Donnell was on her way home with her boyfriend Teddy when she says she witnessed a similar sighting. Frightened by what she had seen she jumped into Terry’s arms.
The Shelly’s claim to have seen the unidentified object in a field next to the Mullinahone Creamery. Cathal O’Shannon joins Eddie Bergin, the South Tipperary Civil Defence Officer, and his assistant Eddie O’Neill as they check the field with geiger counters for possible signs of residual radiation. However, there were no signs of radiation found.
This ‘Newsbeat’ report was broadcast on 26 February 1969.

I’m the Canadian born son of an Irish immigrant dad, born only weeks after my parents arrived in North America. Dad was born and raised in Belfast but educated (Dr.)at Trinity College in Dublin. He had great fondness for both cities. These clips are just pure gold for me! I’ve been to Ireland three times - at 7 yrs, at 13 yrs and at 19 yrs old. I’m now 63 and am planning a trip for my wife (a Canadian born Scott’s Irish who’s never been) and I as soon as this world regains it’s senses after covid 19 lockdowns!

My old man saw something very similar over Cabra in Dublin with a crowd of people in 1969. Hung in the air for a few minutes. Lights all over it pulsing orange, red and then every colour of the rainbow and back to orange. Completely silent. Larger than a full moon and he estimated as high up as a low passenger plane coming into land. Abruptly shot off west, stopped abruptly and then shot off again at a 90 degree angle towards the Dublin mountains like a bullet. Curious if it’s the same thing.

Credible sounding couple, credible looking couple. My late Uncle John McCulloch saw an UFO while working as a vet in Nigeria many years ago.. He too was a VERY credible witness.

They definitely saw something that day , may have been advanced aircraft but the half sphere rules that out, people in ireland that time were honest and believable as seen from their faces, i believe them , there are weird sightings since everywhere, cant all be liars

During my life, I have seen unidentified objects on 5 different times spanning a large number of years, the first I witness with my brothers and cousin in broad light, it stayed around for about 3 minutes and hit the ground a short distance from us and bounced back up, Years later I with my son a daughter of 15 and 12 years of witnessed a flying object which was about the size of a double-decker bus, if followed alongside us as we drove down a road for about 7 minutes, we hit a one-way system so had to drive a short distance around part of a town, when we come to the end of this oneway system the object was waiting for us, it keeps a distance of about 70M from us, we were not frightened so we decided to start chacing to see if we could catch up with it, then it started playing games with us, bringing us down dead-end streets and after about another 15 minutes floated away off in the distance.
Interesting. Navy pilots have said they like to show off, flying right up to the pilots cockpit, basically showing off. One pilot described them as kinda like curious dolphins riding a bow wave of a boat. The dolphins love spinning and doing tricks. Ufo's are apparently no different!

That's quite common, even in public spaces, witnesses often are flabbergasted that it wasn't on the news that night etc.
They seem to hone in on intended witnesses only, and have everyone else oblivious to their presence.
Thus "tunnel vision" even extends to have people see a tiny dot or light on the horizon first, which they inexplicably notice, before then closely approaching the person.
Interesting they both said crimson, shur nobody knew what crimson looked like back in black and white Ireland lol
Funny. Actually people were more well dressed back then and in my experience had a better vocab and knowledge of colours and textiles.
The interviewer asks some stupid questions. Both witnesses described a similar phenomenon. It’s shape and the colour of the lights. Half a century later we are still seeing strange lights in the he night sky. It’s obvious these people are telling the truth.

They just described almost exactly what I saw in the late eighties one night in Kerry. The next morning the newspapers were buzzing with reports of flying saucers seen over Dublin. A few days later it was all put down to a student prank for rag week. The ufo that is, not the two lost sheep.
