"I didn't go to film school" is a phrase I hear from time to time that has the connotation, at least for me, that people who go to film school should have all the answers. However, it's just not true. My two year video production diploma at a well known school taught certainly gave me the basics to start creating content but I have done probably the same amount of learning (if not more) in the two years since I graduated as I did during school. The bottom line is you can't really beat experience and experience comes from doing.

Great questions, great answers. Q #1 I really resonated with. Earlier in the year I made a promo video for a small local business and had issues with communication during the editing process with acquiring feedback from the client as I was the one also editing and what they wanted was so against how I would do it, feeling it was really countering what they had initially wanted in terms of story and especially energy. In the end gave them a finished product I was very unhappy with, though it was what they asked for. Definitely some lessons in that one for me. This video reminded me of that, so thank you.

"Filmmakers Finish Films" are words to live by. I've encountered too many young/starting "filmmakers" who just don't finish projects. Even if it's not perfect, it's better to put something out than nothing at all. What's that one saying, "done is better than perfect"?

    Facts. Facts. More facts.
Finding ways to stay in the DOC game is KEY. Whether it's random jobs, collaborations or spec projects etc

I appreciate your grounded advice. Hats off to anybody who can live the DOC life, and I know it ain't me. -- Takes special kind of animal for that. And you, Luc are one such animal. Another excellent video.

Q#1: Ran into a number of problems along this lines early in my career, particularly when I working on people's projects for free and with less diciplined/trained directors. Fact of the matter is that you're there on any level of production to serve the director's vision, you should offer your input and just accept that they have the final call, burned a lot of bridges early on by being stubborn about things (that I still maintain I was right on) because I wanted a good show piece for my reel and honestly kinda felt that it was owed to me that my opinion be respected when I was working for low/no pay. Ultimately all that came from me digging in my heels was a number of novice directors spreading the word that I was a pain in the ass to work with. Over time I learned some humility, but also as I worked with people who paid me more I found they were more willing to respect and listen to my option, and as I worked with better directors I also found that more often our vision would align. The best thing you can do is just be respectful and the kind of person people want to speak positively about then try to shift to working with people you jive with better in the future.

Fingers crossed, I'll be up to Inuvik and Paulatuk next summer. For me, it's a unique personal and camera opportunity but I'm a smaller part of the purpose of the entire group.

All these pre-production questions make me think of how we filmed the "story line" of a music video the other day. One of the band members decided to show up and he started directing us, throwing all our pre-production out the window. We ended up praying and spraying and now post is a nightmare 😅
