  • Toda embroidery, also known as pukhoor (flower) locally, is the artwork of the pastoral Toda tribe inhabiting the Nilgiri hills in Tamil Nadu. It received the Geographical Indication (GI) tag in 2013. Traditional Toda embroidery motifs based on nature like animals, insects, birds, flowers, and even architectural designs. Earlier, the Toda women embroidered only shawls and began selling them to Shalom Ooty store in Ooty. But they were expensive and only the rich tourists would buy. Shalom trained them to make small products like clutches, coin purses, and mobile covers, pricing them between Rs50 and Rs100. Toda is counted thread embroidery and women work with red and black threads only on white or off-white fabric as it is clearly visible on them. Read the full story on 30Stades.com
The only stitch used in Toda embroidery is the darning stitch, done from the back of the fabric. The technique is to count the threads of the white base and then cross-stitch to form the desired pattern.
