Thanks for the video. I am 1.5 years in with nursing and 7 months as a float pool nurse at my hospital. I feel like this position is in alignment with travel nurse because every floor on my unit is different. For the next year and a half I want to grow, build, and expand my nursing knowledge and skillset so I can market myself through traveling.

I absolutely lovee local travel! My daughter is still small so I can’t just travel how I want. I still make awesome money, 3x as much as I’d make as staff! I live in Indiana so cost of living isn’t terrible but it has went up!
Am a freelance nurse and go to different hospitals. I book from day to day. I hate being a staff nurse too and it’s not just the money, but the whole environment. Overworked, underpaid, abusive patients, not deciding your self on when to have free on holidays etc. But there are some disadvantages at least in Denmark. If you have a permanent job, you get paid when you are sick. You don’t get that as a freelancer. I will get an office job with few hours and work the rest as a freelancing nurse. I also heard that it’s difficult to buy a house as a travel nurse in the US. That’s also should be considered. But the freedom is the best
@Milly_in_demark, Where do you get the information that it's difficult to buy a house in USA as a travel nurse?? It's the opposite because you're grossing a lot more money and basically can buy a house cash if they really want too.
@@Diafgadgsut I actually saw different nurses I. The US here on CZcams say that. I know that you earn more money, but it had something to do with the bank and other factors I can’t remember.
As a former travel nurse, this it not entirely true. If you have you finances in order you can get a home. Yes the process it a little trickier but if you have a great team it can happen. I got a condo after traveling and this was PRE - Pandemic! So I can imagine now it’s easier to secure a loan because as a nurse you will always be able to find work.
This sounds like the best of both worlds. Awesome pay increase, flexibility to move on if its not a good fit or extend the contract if I fall in love with the unit, still close to home & family, I can keep my apartment & stay in hotels if its a distant county but in my home state (MD) the furthest county from mine is still just a few hours drive away, weekly over biweekly pay, shift preference, practically guaranteed time off, three 12's and done or OT if I want it, no office politics drama... I could go on and on!
Damn it’s so depressing doing the same job, but some newby comes in and makes double or triple what you make. I’d love to be a travel nurse but I have a family and can’t move :/
Just do local traveling and buy your own health insurance… you don’t have to move anywhere just travel to different hospitals in your same state that are possibly close to you. Perhaps less than 50 miles away from you if you can manage that.
I invested in farming as well, I am a nurse with only 1 year experience and my farm makes $10k/month. I will leave nursing too but I am waiting to generate 50k monthly before leaving. Travel nursing is on my agenda next.
Thanks for this video! It’s the only one I could on the topic of LOCAL travel nursing and you did a great job. Question: is there a limit to how many times you can extend your contract at a hospital? Also how many times can you work at a certain hospital in a year? There’s only so many hospitals within driving distance. Really trying to get into this!

Get some experience under your belt so you are ready for anything to be thrown at you… 2 years is sufficient… you dont want to be new to things and have ppl (regular staff) to teach you stuff you should already know…that defeats the purpose of being a traveler who should honestly be on their own after 1 day orientation. being competent and not rushing into traveling is the way to go. I was considering doing a lot of Saunders questions over and over for foundation’s and to pass my NCLEX overall. I’m not sure if that’s what you did. I’m all about being a local travel nurse. I don’t care to ‘travel’ anywhere for work. I appreciate this video. How far do you need to ‘live’ from the institution? I don’t want to be a staff nurse. I’m about the business like you said.
Doesnt matter really how close you live.. but agencies wont make you “local” if youre 50-75 miles away from a hospital. They will automatically put you as a regular traveler. Depends from agencies to agencies. Usually its 50-75 miles. Find a hospital close to you thats close to you.. it could be a mile or 10.. doesnt matter.. just let it be close so youre not driving so far that u end up sleeping on the road..

You deff need two years of work experience for the most part. Some ppl get by with one year but only because its covid times and hospitals need nurses. But two years under your belt should make u feel extra confident. With whatever unit u go to, you can find a travel job for that unit.
Most agencies want u to have two years bc the hospitals they work with want two years experience. So i do travel nursing on medsurg units because i had two years experience prior

Hello! Just sign up with any agency and ask them about local. Thing is it has to be less than 50 miles for you to travel for it to be considered local… otherwise if it is more then the agency will automatically put you as a “real” traveler. with stipends and all…

Yes get experience. You need it. You cant just go into traveling with little to no experience and expect it to be easy. Protect your license. Noone will teach a new nurse stuff they should know.. if they are a traveler. You’re expected to know how to do most things as soon as you become a traveler. Most hospitals will give 1 day orientation and thats it.

Yea with family it can be hard because you have to figure out if your spouse and kids will travel with you... ideally if your kids are grown and in college they dont come with you when you travel... if your spouse is up for it then they can travel with you... i have neither so its easy for me to be a travel nurse. Once u have a spouse or kids then it gets tricky.
Sheesh all that at the same time!? So hard. Glad u were able to make it work tho, some hospitals will schedule u how they feel it, and not honor ur request.

It's great seeing how other hospitals and nurses do things. No matter how high tech, rich and awesome a hospital is, at some point they will take you into a back room and show you a piece of equipment, where they excitedly pull a sheet off like a magician revealing a trick and it will be powered by a fat hampster in a wheel. You are like, "Are you serious! But? Everything else here is so modern and cutting edge. Even ghetto hospitals have better than this! How is this possible?" And they just stare back at you blankly. Then you realize, they have no idea what the outside world is like.
Hi im a travel nurse. I was working with a canadian nurse today that is dual certified. She had to take the Nclex in the US to be able to work here even though she was a nurse in Canada to do travel nursing. She is working with me in NJ and NYC. i hope this helps!!
why take the stipend when you don't need it? lets say you're local traveling to a hospital 10 miles away from you? you don't need extra money to stay at a local air bob or overnight hotel to travel to that job you're tryna work at.. most agencies will not offer you stipend if they know your tax home is less than 50 OR 75miles away from the hospital you want to work at. I say 50 or 75 b/c it depends on the agency.. if they don't give you stipend b/c of that, you will be a local traveler. where you are paid hourly. its either one or the other , not both. stipend isn't free money the govt gives you to travel at your leisure, its for working at a place that you cannot simply travel back home safely in that same time period. if the hospital you choose is 100 miles away, you're not local. you're reg. Travel. this is because no one on earth can travel safely back to their home after their shift and the come back to work again...thats why its usually 50 or 75miles. there's no set rule, however if you do take stipends and you dont need them, there is a possibility of your agency being audited and you being audited as well. talk to a recruiter. good luck,

Hi there! I have a question. I’ve heard that there can be some tax issues with the housing stipend and local traveling. Can you explain to me how that all works? Can I just use the stipend for a hotel while I’m working, and then go home on my off days? It is a lot to learn and I’m a little confused! Thank you so much!
Hi! There definitely can be tax issues with the housing stipend because you technically shouldn’t be taking ANY stipends when you’re doing local contracts. It is local because you’re able to travel to your home and back safely without staying at another residence or a hotel . It can get very complicated and I don’t know anyone who is a local traveler who is taking stipends. it’s either one or the other. Otherwise you might just become a regular traveler instead of local to get all the stipends if you are within that realm. I would definitely talk to your recruiter or a tax person more in depth in it. I personally don’t take any stipends b/c there is no need to and I just accept the hire per hour wage which is all taxed. I don’t need the IRS to be auditing me.lol
@@danas3148 why would you take stipends if you honestly don't need them? lets say the hospital is 15 miles away from you? are you going to take stipends? if so, I'd think hard about that... also, how is making lets say 80-130 $/per hr cutting yourself short? isn't it still a lot? be careful not to get audited. you have to prove why you need the stipends anyway.. the govt. isn't giving away free money for us to just travel and vacate esp to a hospital in our backyard lol. I suggest speaking to a recruiter , consider the mileage and go based off that...

There's a hospital 40 miles from me, pay is great but it's a sister hospital and I wonder if I quit if they will let me travel there. @@danas3148 what do you mean by quit? you're not a FT staff there, are you? if you are a regular staff there, I don't think they'll let you qui and then travel right away to that same facility. man hospitals have that rule.. and it makes sense.. and for local, many agencies consider local traveling to be I believe 49 miles and less. its when its 50 miles and above that it is considered non local... so that's where you could take stipends... local traveling is traveling to a hospital lets say 49 miles or less from your home..or tax home..so there would be no need to take any stipends because you're going back to your home that same day when your shift is over.. there would be no need to take any stipends.. but ppl seem to be doing that and can get in trouble w/ that and end up having to pay alllll of that stipends money back.. if you want to do local, find a Hospital really close to you and get paid hourly.. and make sure the hourly is high enough.. that's how you can do things legally and not worry... but if you taking stipends for a hospital 20 miles away from you..... I can't speak on that lol. and most agencies will not even let you take stipends if they know your home is 49 miles or less from that hospital.... some agencies even say 75 miles or less.. it depends.. but good luck! happy traveling

Lol u need experience to be (any) type of travel nurse. U cant be a new nurse and be a traveler. You wouldnt know how to do a lot getting out of nursing school. Yes, when the gig is up, you can tell them when you want to start again. However an open position may be already taken when you want to join again.
no you can't... I know some agencies wont let you take stipends.. and there's no need to... if you're less than 50 miles you can travel back to your home after work.. and still take home great pay w/o stipends.. stipends are for people who actually travel travel... those who cannot make it back to their tax home after work.. so you take stipends that cover housing stay, travel, etc.
I dont take any stipend at including the mileage .. im just paid by the hour. I think those who take the stipend(true traveler) and those who dont (local) get the same equivalent.
The travel nurses we get slack so much and just don't care we get the worst ones I work overnights and one travel nurse would literally fall asleep or hide all the time
Honestly as long as you want to/as long as they need you... ive extended my contract to make it a full year at the hospital i am at... i just make sure i take off needed time...
And since you’re local, the year problem that comes up with regular travelers doesn’t apply. B/c for regular travelers, you cant stay at a hospital for a year or more or it would be seen as your permanent job to the irs.. something to that nature
Just start “traveling” to local hospitals near your home. Less than 50 miles... so you dont take the stipend... you just get paid hourly... but still not an employee of the hospital but of your agency.

It all depends on where you are. Here is mines. Food stipend 532 tax free housing 1057 tax free now my taxable hr rate is 22.75 yes that’s low but with the stipends take how weekly is over 2,000. I get a stipend because I travel 50mile from my house and for me that 55 minutes. If I didn’t travel 50 mile my hourly wage is higher. Hope that helps. Also it depends on your state. Ohio cost of living is not that expensive.
Yes it depends. Without taking the stipends, you get paid hourly… with covid crisis it could be more than double of what a regular staff RN works. So lets say they make $30, without covid crisis, expect $20 more than the regular staffer.. but it honestly depends on if there is a crisis rate going on and how much they are willing to pay you as a traveler (and how bad the unit needs a nurse)
Great info! I'm an RNBSN w/ 20 yr experience. Just took Travel Nurse 1st assignment. Then was asked to extend. But, now it sounds like I may be cheating myself. What should the pay ranges go up to when you extend your contract? Double current pay? 50%? How is it determined? --Thanks
50% no. That would fly if crisis rate were being offered but they arent anymore for the most part... it should go up a bit especially since u extended. If they dont then i’d look elsewhere. You can also ask for more incentives like free parking etc. however it just depends on ur facility and “how much they like u”. But ALWAYS ask them for an increase. The answer will always be “no” if you dont ask. :)
Less than 50 miles usually. If youre pushing it out that range then just do regular traveling and take the stipends... might as well find a place near that hospital and use the stipends to pay...local would be of no use driving that far

I am on my second contract and girl!!!!!! It was the best decision that I’ve made in my life. I did it to finish up school.

You can. I’ve heard travel nurses on the phone with their realtor and discussing closing on their new home. It’s a myth. Money talks in the USA.

Hey, no there really isnt a limit. If the hospital needs you, with a specific unit then theyll accept you extending…

hey! i pay for private insurance that comes with the state I live in... I don't use agencies insurance at all..

Hello! Just sign up with any agency and ask them about local. Thing is it has to be less than 50 miles for you to travel for it to be considered local… otherwise if it is more then the agency will automatically put you as a “real” traveler. with stipends and all…

Yes get experience. You need it. You cant just go into traveling with little to no experience and expect it to be easy. Protect your license. Noone will teach a new nurse stuff they should know.. if they are a traveler. You’re expected to know how to do most things as soon as you become a traveler. Most hospitals will give 1 day orientation and thats it.

All agency. Depends if they’ll reimburse you. Just ask to see if theyll cover parking fees and uniform. It’s usually up to a certain amount

Yea with family it can be hard because you have to figure out if your spouse and kids will travel with you... ideally if your kids are grown and in college they dont come with you when you travel... if your spouse is up for it then they can travel with you... i have neither so its easy for me to be a travel nurse. Once u have a spouse or kids then it gets tricky.

I took a local contract recently, I have not regretted doing it but I do regret doing both my local assignment and staff position concurrently.

It's great seeing how other hospitals and nurses do things. No matter how high tech, rich and awesome a hospital is, at some point they will take you into a back room and show you a piece of equipment, where they excitedly pull a sheet off like a magician revealing a trick and it will be powered by a fat hampster in a wheel. You are like, "Are you serious! But? Everything else here is so modern and cutting edge. Even ghetto hospitals have better than this! How is this possible?" And they just stare back at you blankly. Then you realize, they have no idea what the outside world is like.

Hi im a travel nurse. I was working with a canadian nurse today that is dual certified. She had to take the Nclex in the US to be able to work here even though she was a nurse in Canada to do travel nursing. She is working with me in NJ and NYC. i hope this helps!!

why take the stipend when you don't need it? lets say you're local traveling to a hospital 10 miles away from you? you don't need extra money to stay at a local air bob or overnight hotel to travel to that job you're tryna work at.. most agencies will not offer you stipend if they know your tax home is less than 50 OR 75miles away from the hospital you want to work at. I say 50 or 75 b/c it depends on the agency.. if they don't give you stipend b/c of that, you will be a local traveler. where you are paid hourly. its either one or the other , not both. stipend isn't free money the govt gives you to travel at your leisure, its for working at a place that you cannot simply travel back home safely in that same time period. if the hospital you choose is 100 miles away, you're not local. you're reg. Travel. this is because no one on earth can travel safely back to their home after their shift and the come back to work again...thats why its usually 50 or 75miles. there's no set rule, however if you do take stipends and you dont need them, there is a possibility of your agency being audited and you being audited as well. talk to a recruiter. good luck,

Hi! There definitely can be tax issues with the housing stipend because you technically shouldn’t be taking ANY stipends when you’re doing local contracts. It is local because you’re able to travel to your home and back safely without staying at another residence or a hotel . It can get very complicated and I don’t know anyone who is a local traveler who is taking stipends. it’s either one or the other. Otherwise you might just become a regular traveler instead of local to get all the stipends if you are within that realm. I would definitely talk to your recruiter or a tax person more in depth in it. I personally don’t take any stipends b/c there is no need to and I just accept the hire per hour wage which is all taxed. I don’t need the IRS to be auditing me.lol

@@danas3148 why would you take stipends if you honestly don't need them? lets say the hospital is 15 miles away from you? are you going to take stipends? if so, I'd think hard about that... also, how is making lets say 80-130 $/per hr cutting yourself short? isn't it still a lot? be careful not to get audited. you have to prove why you need the stipends anyway.. the govt. isn't giving away free money for us to just travel and vacate esp to a hospital in our backyard lol. I suggest speaking to a recruiter , consider the mileage and go based off that...

There's a hospital 40 miles from me, pay is great but it's a sister hospital and I wonder if I quit if they will let me travel there. @@danas3148 what do you mean by quit? you're not a FT staff there, are you? if you are a regular staff there, I don't think they'll let you qui and then travel right away to that same facility. man hospitals have that rule.. and it makes sense.. and for local, many agencies consider local traveling to be I believe 49 miles and less. its when its 50 miles and above that it is considered non local... so that's where you could take stipends... local traveling is traveling to a hospital lets say 49 miles or less from your home..or tax home..so there would be no need to take any stipends because you're going back to your home that same day when your shift is over.. there would be no need to take any stipends.. but ppl seem to be doing that and can get in trouble w/ that and end up having to pay alllll of that stipends money back.. if you want to do local, find a Hospital really close to you and get paid hourly.. and make sure the hourly is high enough.. that's how you can do things legally and not worry... but if you taking stipends for a hospital 20 miles away from you..... I can't speak on that lol. and most agencies will not even let you take stipends if they know your home is 49 miles or less from that hospital.... some agencies even say 75 miles or less.. it depends.. but good luck! happy traveling

Lol u need experience to be (any) type of travel nurse. U cant be a new nurse and be a traveler. You wouldnt know how to do a lot getting out of nursing school. Yes, when the gig is up, you can tell them when you want to start again. However an open position may be already taken when you want to join again.

no you can't... I know some agencies wont let you take stipends.. and there's no need to... if you're less than 50 miles you can travel back to your home after work.. and still take home great pay w/o stipends.. stipends are for people who actually travel travel... those who cannot make it back to their tax home after work.. so you take stipends that cover housing stay, travel, etc.

I dont take any stipend at including the mileage .. im just paid by the hour. I think those who take the stipend(true traveler) and those who dont (local) get the same equivalent.

Honestly as long as you want to/as long as they need you... ive extended my contract to make it a full year at the hospital i am at... i just make sure i take off needed time...
And since you’re local, the year problem that comes up with regular travelers doesn’t apply. B/c for regular travelers, you cant stay at a hospital for a year or more or it would be seen as your permanent job to the irs.. something to that nature

It all depends on where you are. Here is mines. Food stipend 532 tax free housing 1057 tax free now my taxable hr rate is 22.75 yes that’s low but with the stipends take how weekly is over 2,000. I get a stipend because I travel 50mile from my house and for me that 55 minutes. If I didn’t travel 50 mile my hourly wage is higher. Hope that helps. Also it depends on your state. Ohio cost of living is not that expensive.
Yes it depends. Without taking the stipends, you get paid hourly… with covid crisis it could be more than double of what a regular staff RN works. So lets say they make $30, without covid crisis, expect $20 more than the regular staffer.. but it honestly depends on if there is a crisis rate going on and how much they are willing to pay you as a traveler (and how bad the unit needs a nurse)

50% no. That would fly if crisis rate were being offered but they arent anymore for the most part... it should go up a bit especially since u extended. If they dont then i’d look elsewhere. You can also ask for more incentives like free parking etc. however it just depends on ur facility and “how much they like u”. But ALWAYS ask them for an increase. The answer will always be “no” if you dont ask. :)

Less than 50 miles usually. If youre pushing it out that range then just do regular traveling and take the stipends... might as well find a place near that hospital and use the stipends to pay...local would be of no use driving that far
