UNBROKEN- a disc golf injury recovery story ft. Paige Pierce

- I’ve been a disc golf competitor my whole life. I’ve never had an injury or even gone to the hospital so when I broke my ankle in July it was devastating to know that I’d be missing out on tournaments and the life that I created out touring on the road. I’ve had a lot of realizations in the past 5 months since my injury and we felt that this “mini-documentary” was a good avenue to share my journey and my thoughts. This whole recovery has been such a process of shifting my perspectives and just recognizing how grateful I am to be able to do the big and small tasks. It’s an attitude shift from “I HAVE TO” to “I GET TO”. I hope by sharing my story it helps someone else get through a hard time you might be facing.
A huge thank you goes out to the whole Idio team for helping me share my story with y’all- you can find my new @idiosports disc golf shoe at: idiosports.com/en-ca in the color Shattered Skyline.
I’m so excited to keep the recovery going all while rocking my new Idios, hope to see y’all at a tournament in 2024!
Thank you to Team Playback www.teamplayback.com/ for helping with the filming and editing of this documentary! - Sport
As an Amputee finding disc golf was amazing for me. Not easy by any means but I am figuring it out. I am proud of you for staying positive and pushing through! You are an inspiration to the game!
I'm so happy you were able to find the sport, we can keep. on inspiring each other ✨
Is your sister a PT????
Let's go! Stories like yours always put the challenges that I face in perspective! Thanks for the inspiring comment here. Rock on.
@@Jason-Moonabsolutely brotha, we can do it! 👊😎
I love hearing an update from you personally! Myself and so many people are cheering for you. Heal up the RIGHT way, keep putting the work in, and I look forward to seeing you play next year. Cheers Paige!
PP 2.0 is going to shred. Thanks for sharing your recovery video.
Paige you're an absolute Legend in our sport. One of my heroes and I was so happy to meet you after a few pro tourneys. I've learned a lot from studying your form. Good healing to you and I look forward to seeing you salute the basket again with your signature overhead disc flourish before you drain a long putt!
All the best from New Zealand. looking forwards to seeing you back in action, the games is better with you in it.
This means a lot, thanks!
As a professional martial artist for nearly 50 years, the only thing i can say that might help is that the rehab process will not only make you stronger, mentally and physically, but will make you much more aware of how your body mechanics function, that alone will give you and edge coming back. Looking forwards to seeing Paige V.2.0 soon!! @@paigepiercediscgolf
@@paigepiercediscgolf Just another N.Zer who loves watching you from the couch. I'm nearly 80 and get out to (real) golf a couple of times most weeks. But have missed seeing you on the tour. All the best for your future, whatever it holds.
After I broke my arm crashing my OneWheel, you helped inspire me to get into disc golf at age 59 because you were always smiling and having fun. How could anyone watch you play and not want to get in on that?
So happy for you and Alyssa, and just remember to let go of the things you can’t control, and live for the moment. Everything else will fall into place.
Thanks for being you, looking forward to your return! 🕺🕺🕺
Wow, that's amazing!! Thanks for the kind words :)
wishing you the speediest of recoveries and rehab. nothing is worse than when your body is injured/hurting and you can't do what you love. i have garbage knees, i've done so much to make them usable-ish (but always hurting), so i can really relate to being sidelined from even picking up the dog poop. really getting into dg since being re-intro'd to it over the summer. and you are an inspiration. hoping to see you back on tour as soon as you're ready!
🛴❤
Watching the disc fly really is the best, when you feel it all come together. Watching it when you know you were a bit off is the worst but at the same time the best motivator to keep working at it, so you can get that feeling of the sweet spot throw more often. Keep working at it, and you'll get to watch beautiful flights coming out of your hand again soon.
That's the plan, there's nothing better than the flight of the disc 😍
Love to see this! You're such a charismatic ambassador for this lovely sport and such a fun person to watch and support and your presence was definitely missed by thousands of fans this year. Come back strong and get that 6th one!
Can't wait to see you back on the course!! And congratulations to you and Alyssa on the wedding, I am so happy for you two!!!
🥰 thank yooooou!
I broke my ankle in very similar fashion 12 years ago. It took long time before I could play soccer without thinking how my leg feels. So I can relate, being patient is the key to recovery and at the same time the hardest thing to do. Cheers Paige, you can do it!
Love your positive outlook on this, Paige. I recently played my first round in a few years after dealing with a shoulder injury, and the forced time off definitely made me appreciate the sport in a new way. Hoping all the best for your recovery!
Didn’t even know it was an ad til the end. Well done
Thank you for posting! You are one of my favorite people playing the sport. I hope the PT brings you to better than before.
Can't wait to see you back in the game. I love your disks and your attitude it has made me a better disk-golfer. I've found patience myself in this sport as well.
Keep it up Paige! My girlfriend also broke her ankle (tib, fib, and ankle bones) between holes while we were disc golfing a little over a year ago. She's still recovering and says, "Thank's for making this video! It's inspiring me to be patient with my healing as well!"
Thank you for sharing this update and explaining the process and all that happens from injury to rehab and rehabilitation. Thank you for sharing the mental process and how a severe injury affects literally every aspect of your life. I destroyed my knee in an accident that could have been a life ending accident. Shatters both sides of my tibial plateau, shattered the right side of my femoral condyle.. my knee hyperextended, and my ACL completely detached by pulling up the bone that it attaches to inside the knee joint. It was six months before I could even return to my job. It ended my mountain climbing and mountain hunting. It affects me every single day of my life, including at my job. I had to boot, scoot up my stairs to take a bath. I depended on people for so much. One injury can devastate you. The physical part of the injury is one thing, the mental and emotional part I think it’s worse. I hope you fully heal and fully recover. Best wishes! My son got me to DiscGolf just over a year ago. I’m 53 years old. I’m lucky if I can throw 300 feet on a good day. My bodies pretty beat up but I sure enjoy getting a disc in the chains. I’m about it 875 rated player on a good day. Maybe next year I can break 900.
You know and feel the pain that injuries can have on you. It's such a journey but I'm hoping you're now through the thick of it! Rooting for you to get to 900!
Fantastic lil vid. And congrats on the come back and making it back to the top soon!!
Paige, I suffered a broken and dislocated ankle when in my mid-late 20's during a snowball fight of all things. The doctor said it was the worst injury that he had seen after doing hundreds of surgeries before me. I only went to therapy once or twice at the hospital, and then on did all my own therapy at home. That is where you make the most progress. I was doing it like 2-3 times per day for months. Still have all the pins + plates + screws + wires still in their and I am now 61 yrs old. your "passion" about doing that will get you back to normal by July / August. These type of injuries just simply take time.
Such a huge fan. Your so good & you'll be even better when you come back. Speedy recovery, but also don't rush it. Let your game come to you.
Thanks for sticking around and for the wise words 😄
Your so welcome & I mean it. Congratulations again. McIver is an awesome course. Grew up in Oregon.
Paige. You are an inspiration. Wishing you the speediest of recovery.
Since July I've been thinking how you were doing and have hoped you are confident and your ankle healing well. Yes, an injury makes one appreciate so much what you have or had.
Sending my best wishes to you from the other side of the pond 🤞🍀🌻
I broke my ankle last year preparing for a tournament. As soon as I healed up I started a new journey, to make the pro tour. You got this champ, don't give up.
Love the video Paige! We will be seeing you back in competition, I know you live for it!😊
Take your time. Don't rush. Your health is more important. Congrats on your marriage. Hope to see you back out there soon.
You are a great role model with a very grounded view. We are cheering for you in every way!
You are incredible Paige can’t wait to see you on the courses more 🔥
I'm ready for it 😎
My son and I are huge fans of you. We wish you nothing but the best during this time. Disc golf helped me tremendously after I broke my back in 2014. He is hoping to meet you one day.
Hope to meet y'all at a tournament some time! I'm happy to hear you found relief in disc golf!
Well done Paige! Looking forward to your return to disc golf!
All the best, Paige!
My daughter (and me) fell in love with disc golf 4 years ago, and since we were a week in Finland and played some of the hardest courses as long as we had daylight (in june!), she loves it even more. We feel for you, as we are addicted to the flight of the discs as well. Best wishes from over the Atlantic!
That reminds me of my memories with my dad, cherish them because they sure do go quickly!
@@paigepiercediscgolf
Yes, I see that. All my children are already incredible self-reliant and moving forward. I am glad about every hour I may spend with them but I am also glad, that with every year passing by, they are more on their very own journey.
And now that we wrote each other for a moment, thank you for the inspiration you gave my daughter and me, when we discovered disc golf and the whole world around it by watching you and so many others play! And also thank you and the whole disc golf community for being so approachable. It really feels like we all are somehow connected by this sport. This is a feeling, I don´t have while waching soccer or something similar big.
We miss you....Get better!!!!! you can do it
💖 thank you so much
My wife and I met you in Waco, very down to earth .. I hope you recover fully and efficiently
My two sons (6 & 10) and I send you our best. You and Alyssa are wonderful and lucky to have each other. Stay strong. Stay patient. Remember that your fans are here for you now and will be there when you get back on the course.
You're the best! Glad to see this update. You'll be stronger than ever when you're back.
I broke my leg 2 years ago slipping off a pad while warming up for a tournament. As a fan it's crazy to have that in common, but I wish you the absolute best in your recovery. Excited to see you get back out and shred it, so we can have that in common, too!
You are an amazing person. I'm so glad to see you back in the game.
Hey Paige! Thanks for updating us on your progress. I'm glad you're doing better. I broke my ankle in college playing basketball and it ruined me for quite a long time too. I have to say, kind of selfishly, I'd love to see you playing again soon, but your health is more important than me being a fan. So I'd prefer to know you're fully recovered. Anyway, best of luck in the rest of your recovery.
Thank you!! How long did it take before you were back out doing activities like basketball?
Inspiring attitude, can't wait til you come back, better than ever 💪 Best wishes on a full and speedy recovery 🤝
Missed you at throw pink! Let the recovery happen and be 100% when you return and dominate! Hope to see you at worlds next year! All the best.
🙏 I was devastated to miss worlds, I've been looking forward to it since 2022.
Thanks for making this Paige. I can't wait to see you back out there.
So very inspirational Paige. Everyone that knows you believes you will be back playing your best because you are a fighter. Wish you and Alyssa the best. Can;t wait to see you back. God bless , take care and keep on fightin.
A lot of amazing lessons here. S/o to Paige for sharing this with us. I'm booking my appts for my surgery today :/
🤞hope its a speedy recovery!
I went through the exact same thing this year with my left ankle. What an eye opening experience. It wasn't until I was finally able to get back on the course before I felt like life was getting back to normal. Definitely have a better appreciation for my health and fitness!
It sucks you got injured but you’ll be back….its only temporary and fortunately you’ve become a champion and famous prior so you have financial security. Many, many people loose EVERYTHING…job, house, car, kids college tuition, credit rating and sometimes their marriage because they get injured and aren’t wealthy.
You are very fortunate and you’ll come back stronger and with a different mindset which will hopefully take you in a different direction of being charitable. Much love and take it slow-don’t rush yourself- don’t worry…..we’ll be here waiting for you….because we love young lady.
Your description of the fall was very similar to my fall 30 years ago. Mine was on ice and my left foot slid off and I went straight down onto my right foot. Even if it’s just because of the 30 year difference, I’m sure you are get much better care and info than I did. However, one thing I can tell you is that it takes a long time for your ligaments and tendons to recover. It took me about a year before my ligament on the outside of my ankle was tight enough to stop getting caught, and releasing with snap, every once in a while.
My first throw ever playing disc golf on a wet tee pad, slipped and complete tear quad tendon rupture. 2yrs later and im plying regularly, Great story! thumbs up
Went through those same thoughts and emotions once I recovered from a back injury. I count my blessings every time I get to practice putting or play a round. Good for you Paige! Take those life lessons and cherish them!
Glad you have the fire back 🔥
The growth of disc golf has been wonderful! We now have options on who to support and root against, this is living.
Let's go, Paige! Looking forward to seeing you back in 2024!
I just sprained my knee a week ago while attempting a short putt. The frost on the ground was melting turning it all to slippery mud then before I knew I was falling and I could feel a pop that felt like a bone snap in my knee…this video was good to watch this morning you’re always teaching me even in injury 🩼 Lol
looking forward to watching you play when you're ready; I broke my right arm (i'm right handed) many years ago, and I think what attracted me was the challenge of learning to play throwing left handed at age 72. i'm getting better but still have miles to go ... you can do it, Paige; i'm surely pulling for you
Just got done with my total knee replacement! Definitely inspiring words from you. congratulations on the recent wedding
Amazing! How does it feel? Thanks so much!
Great! I’ve had TKR on both knees over the last 3 years and play 2-3 rounds per week. Enjoy your new knee!
Hoping you are back out and shredding courses more than ever before!
Keep on keeping on Paige. The DG world is missing something without ya.
All the best and ❤ from The Netherlands 🇳🇱 paige youre a champion!! and even in this situation making the best of it and learning from this shows me you have all the stuff to be a champion again !! Xx
Sending love from Colorado!
I'm looking forward to seeing how you adjust your already awesome throwing form post-recovery. I bet you are already thinking of a hundred different ways to modify your run-up, stand-still, and all other shot types.
You're the strongest person in the world and I champion your recovery. One day, you will be back, one day at a time.
Get well soon!
Paige, i know you will be back on the course, i hope it is sooner than later. You are a inspiration on the course and you are missed. I hope 2024 is the year for you, and that you will find your way back to the top game. Wish you the very best! Greetings from Scandinavia!
Paige-disc golf needs you. The FPO is often boring to watch because KT has kind of dominated for many of the tournaments. No one has more than occasionaly stepped up to challenge her. I know you can challenge and beat her. You have proved it. Don’t you have the highest rated FPO round ever? I believe you will come back focused to win, and while you probably won’t win them all, you will put the pressure on KT, and there haven’t been more than a few times where she has had to handle it. If this happens, the FPO could be more exciting to watch than the MPO 😀
Thanks paige ❤ excited to see you so happy. Congrats on getting married! :) looking forward to seeing you back on the course
Let's go Paige!
Rooting for you in all ways!
Just a small correction; *My wife Ayla Pierce!!! (Released after the fact) Congratulations again :)
This is true, we filmed *before* we got married though 😜
Ofc! Not a criticism just happened came directly from her (Aylas) IG-post about the name-change so just felt compelled to put it in here as well. Hope You can and will share the recovery like you've done so far without it weighing down the actual recovery part! Hope to see you on feature cards at least and hopefully on lead cards in the final rounds of 2024 ;)
get well soon!
Once the metal will have been removed from your foot, I hope you will return in even better shape than before.
🍀🍀🍀
Sitting watching this with my ankle elevated because I had the 2nd ankle surgery last week (January was first one) … been dealing with injury since September of last year I’m not weight bearing for the next 3 months
If anyone can come back from a bad injury, it's Paige Pierce. She's got the 'right stuff', a strength of mind/body unique to champions.
P.S.
I wish there had been more coverage of what happened. Many DG fans (people at my leagues) assume Paige just stopped playing well. They had no idea about the injury. I think pros sometimes forget that the vast majority of disc golfers know very little about the pro tour scene. To be clear, I'm not speaking about Paige here, but professional disc golf in general, which from the outside seems very much like a bubble of people who don't know they're in a bubble.
as a fan... your contribution to the sport is not just on the course. We want to hear who you're cheering for. We want to see you rebuild your tools to make the disc fly again. You inspire. Your opinion in the sport matters. Make content, we are interested.
Hope you kill it in 2024, Paige!✌🧝
Keep going strong. Disc golf is a much better sport for having you in it. I don't have many signature discs. I don't buy them for the stamp or if they may be worth something. I only buy discs of pros I believe in as a person. The first signature disc I ever bought was a PP Fierce for that reason. Get well soon from the UK
See the light surrounding you. ❤️✨
Good Video,
This will generate a lot of talk amongst your podcasts as well as is the first time we have seen a pro sponsored from a product with such an safety association made. Paige choosing Idio as her shoe is going to be big for the company.
Soon you will be back in full swing, keep it up and train what you can without risking anything!
The game isn’t the same without PP. Can’t wait to see Paige on tour again
I can't wait to be on tour again!
Go Paige, Go!!!
Just one day at a time Paige, stay strong
Heck yeah! A fellow saxophone player!
Man this is hyping me up for a tattar vs pierce situation next year
Get after it! Kristen is not easy to beat at anyones best
Always loved watching you play. But ya lost me at top 40 MPO...
💓
🙏🙏💖💖
Still a huge fan girl! You will b back, i have faith! Beautiful heeler u have. I love the breed and have had them most of my life. Keep pushing paige, u didnt used to b the best, u still are!
You should consider barefoot shoes to slowlry strenghten your feet even further.
Best wishes from Norway
THIS IS A FREAKING COMMERCIAL TO SELL PRODUCTS AT XMAS TIME LOL BEST OF LUCK BUT SHEESH
I'm just glad that Paige isn't the largest disc golf star in the FPO anymore, she is a much less gracious and interesting person than Kristin Tattar.
Work healthcare
No semi-charmed kinda life
In that field
disc golf is better with and because of Paige.
She's an easy person to love. Hope she wins again.
You’ll be ripping again, trust the process.
She starts talking about the injury at 2:30 if you prefer to skip the preamble.
PP world champ 2024,congrats on your marriage,Alyssa is beautiful. Can't wait to see you play next season
Lol
No matter what PP, I've never given up on you. I know you'll dominate again.
I don’t get how you break bones falling from a height of 2 feet
Oh dear....you just lost me as your fan....😪
Why do you say that?
Guessing it's the discovery that they're "living in sin." 🙄
Wow :(@@nolowputts
Get over your self. Learn to forehand , KT is the Goat btw
