Goku’s Japanese voice actress, Masako Nozawa, is a goddamn legend. Extremely skilled at her craft.
seriously show some respect.
Anyone who can survive as long as she has in Japan's notoriously toxic work environment deserves all the respect.
she's definitely different from Schemmel but tbf I like her Goku voice still
Seriously, man was talking some mad shit.
I respect her long career. But she sounds like nails on a chalk board. It can be very polarising to people who didn't grow up on it. I can't watch the sub because of the Son family and krillin.
Its not vast majority that likes dub over sub with Dragon Ball, its 50/50 from all I've seen. Also put some respect on her she has literally been voicing Goku and the other members of the Son family for literal decades.
Well in european view, it's not considered like a good dub generally. Non necessarily the voice acting, but the traduction, english dub invent alot of stuff. Even changing some personnality. And, the music, not the original, less deep, sorry for my bad english
Not even close to what I've seen. I respect her but seeing her voice Goku is like nails on a chalkboard to me and so many other people. I've almost never seen the DBZ community say they prefer the sub.
@@Syntherus Then you haven't seen the whole community because it is definitely 50/50 from my years of being in the community its just that the ones who like the sub aren't as vocal as the ones who hates the sub.
@@Syntherus prefer the sub for every character that exist in dbz
It’s better in every way imo
Gokus voice is the worst in the English dub imo, it legit sucks, like terrible. I legit think I could do a better goku than the dub
Actually DBZA voice actors are better than every voice actor for the dub
Masako is Gokus voice
Ouside of america the whole world watches the original
Its actually more like 80-20 with the majority preffering the original of course
If you think about it freeza counting hero speeches is pretty diabolical.
Idk which is worse, that Freeza has betrayed someones deal 500 times or that 12 people have said the wanted to face fuck freeza to his face.
Wait till he meets Goku
@@wingedbluj1674 lol that parts hilarious "well thats a new one"

This seems like a jojo reference. Wham said hamon users always say the same thing. like how dare you kill my friend, you think losing an eye will stop me?, etc
If you guys need to have a quick convo, press the left arrow key on the vid to go back 5 seconds before unpausing. You sometimes miss little bits and the jokes only come faster as we get later into DBZA and TFS improves.
yes! I hope they start doing this at some point because you're absolutely right they are missing stuff
Bro totally
Masako Nozawa is a fucking chad. Amazing voice actress, very kind old lady by all accounts. gave MasakoX the VC who voices Goku in this, their screenname. It's a Terra Strong situation, where because the character started out as a kid, they chose a female voice actress to play him. but decided to keep him when he grew up. And although you may hate it because you're not use to it. The Sub isn't "unwatchable" it's just strange to people who aren't use to it. Goku's high pitched, slightly rural sounding, Japanese voice, is actually a part of his character, one that often gets forgotten about in the English speaking dragonball fandom, because what most americans fans know Goku was initially voiced by 2 different Canadian voice actors, both with pretty deep voices, and noticeable canadian accents. Then by a slightly higher pitched american, who is the one most fans know. So hearing a high pitched rural Japanese woman puts most people off. Although I'd argue MasakoX actually kinda tries to combine the 3 interprations. with his goku starting off as a Sean Schemal impression, but gradually getting higher, and incorporating rural sounding elements, on purpose, to sound more like Nozawa, and in this arc especially, incorporating some Canadian sounding R's at the end of words like him saying "Freezer and Vegeter" instead of "freeza and vegeta" a lot of people nowadays unironically say it's their favourite Goku voice because of how it encapsulates all the areas of Goku's personality and character that Sean, for as amazing as he is, never fully got imo.
as someone that first watched dbz in Spanish later English and japanese, i would rather rewatch it in japanese the least, the high pitch just doesn't fit goku.
@@jspsand7085 it fits goku perfectly unless you grew up with flanderised dub goku who sounds nothing like the intended character of the childish adreniline junkie with fighting expertise and a good heart often outwayed by selfish hunger for combat he is in the original. also he has a distinct japaense rral accent. a lot of dragonball dubs just give him a chad hero voice and change his lines to be more herioc which imo ruins the characterisation.
@@ms.antithesis maybe, but I'll take a change of tone, than to listen to a older woman screaming, it's really not a good fit for a man regardless of it being goku or not.
Frieza was dubbed by Linda Young up until DBZ Kai, after which Christopher Ayers took over. When Chris died his understudy Daman Mills took over sinc he could do an uncanny mimic of Chris' Frieza
Linda Young also voiced Genki right
@@Chibiwerewoof yup!
It's not uncanny it's pretty darn good with loads of range.
Masako Nozawa is awesome, she doesn't just voice Goku, she also provides the voices for Gohan, Goten & Bardock and Ruff had to say that she's bad & disrespect her acting skills not just Dragon Ball, but in other stuff she's in which there's a lot, mate the woman who was like not even 50 years old at the time to now 86 is still voicing Goku to this day since 1986. Heck One Piece & Dragon Ball in English & Japanese share some of the same voice actors from one another.
It's not as bad as people make out to be let's be real, Masako Nozawa did her best she could voicing them.
I say the same stuff with Collen Clinkenbeard when she voices Luffy in One Piece. It's not even that bad and she has gotten better overtime. Compared to Goku, it's kinda hard to find a VA for Luffy in English and I'm sure she constantly strains her voice when she has to use that coarse tone. Kid Gohan in Kai is a different story though.
Funny thing is Dr Brief was making unneeded installments onto Goku's ship, it wasn't a cappuccino machine though it was a stereo
I don't think I could train like Goku did without a stereo.
1:42 definitely a hot take right there
Yeah, if we're talking about the original dub. Kai and Super were better though (especially Frieza's voice lol).
Freeza fact: He has never trained a day in his life at the time of the Namek saga.
Freezer does mention that his Father is the only one who would kick his ass, but training is never outright said
@@ero-senninsama1734 Bruh he literally confirms it in Super when he gets resurrected the first time
@@TuskyBaby Im not saying you are wrong, im just explaining the complexity. Also, that was written about 20 years after the end of Z. And 8 years after he forgot super saiyan 2 was a thing. I dont trust anything Super related, considering none of the versions are written by Toriyama alone anymore.
@@ero-senninsama1734 He says it in the Resurrection F movie too, the production of which was directly supervised by Toriyama. Also, didn't he say he forget Super Saiyan 2 was a thing because it looked too similar to Super Saiyan? @@devonm042690 well it seems he did not look hard enough to miss the big "3" thats after the words "Super Saiyan"
This is where DBZA starts to pick up the pace with the jokes. I’m not two minutes in and you’ve already missed several due to talking over it. Please either save conversation for later or pause and go back five seconds when you’re done
I wouldnt say wait to talk, but pausing is a good idea
Gohan "What plan? You just keep quaking over and over again"
Krillin "And we're still alive!"
Can't argue with that logic
" Dragonball Z, you watch in dub. "
" Is that a hot take? "
" No, a vast majority..."
Man, you have no idea the gates of HELL you're opening for yourself....😂🤣. The sub is actually VERY popular.
1:45 nah, that's a fairly hot take, most people may prefer the dub but at least respect the sub. And also, she's 80 and has been doing Gokus voice for like 30 years, that's impressive no matter how you look at it. And to say DBZ has the best dub is....arguable? It's only in recent years they've really nailed it, early days are actually average at best
Completely agree. Absolutely a hot take. I have no issue with Goku's voice in the sub, and overall prefer the sub.
30? Lmao db came out in the 80's bruh... its been over 40 years...

@@Rxangel1 welcome back
nah, they were right to skip that tired joke. Kinda like dadoria's gender next episode. It's only really funny in the Kai abridged version cuz no one's making tired trans jokes
@@lewa3910 dude, they never even watched DBZA for one bit, what's so tired about it?
You probably don’t remember him killing the kid because according to funimation he was breathing after that made sure by having breath noises added everything his corpse was shown or by the fact according to funimation he only killed Cairo was because his aim was bad and he was aiming for the elder
Oh yeah bring up the sub vs dub war. Ocean vs Funimation, Japanese vs English.. the early Funimation dub that didn't have the ocean actors was abismal, sorry to say. All of those actors got way better in DBZ Kai but there's enough people whining about not liking it.
I would rather watch the sub. And it really is not as bad as that dude makes it out to be. Yeah so what if Goku is voiced by an 80 year old woman (in DBZ she would have been 50 or something) ..
Everyone's entitled to their opinions I suppose.
My dub preferences are DBZA > Ocean > Funimation. I'll still prefer the sub over the dub, but the DBZA actors are great and the dialogue brings a fresh new take on the series.
I say this as someone who prefers watching dubs, the OG DBZ dub is definitely _not_ one of the best dubs, we've just got an incredible amount of nostalgia for it. Kai & Super are both leagues better in terms of voice work, and the dub is on par with the subs. Pretty sure the only anime where the dub is unanimously better than the sub is Bebop
Nah I disagree I prefer sub for DBZ, dub is also good tho
I just can’t get used to gokus voice but that just me
@@shootout-shinobi6672 same, Goku's original voice ruins it for me
How dare Ruff hate on Masako Nozawa's Goku, that's dragon ball heracy right there.
ive never cringed faster, not only is the sub for DBZ amazing and Goku's VA is a LEGEND, i would say its very much better than the dub
agree to disagree.
I wouldnt go as far as ruff and say dbz is one of the best dubs, but i think its solid and the sub voice for goku is... well people seem to either love it or hate it.
@@justsomebody-1665depends on the dub. Original Funimation dub is horrendous, with changed BGMs, bad translations and 0 experience behind some of the voices. The only reason I would recomend someone to watch an english speaking person to watch TFS first its to avoid that mess of a dub.
I just can't stand how saiyans sound like 6 year old women in sub. It's like cheese graters sometimes, and I just enjoy Chris Sabat and Sean Schemmel much more
And I've never cringed faster at someone gatekeeping an anime. Who cares sub or dub. I like dub way more is sub better ehh probably, do I personally care? Nah I'm good.
Its saiyajin not saiyan... and yes the vast majority watches the original dragon ball
No one watches the dub Version outside of america
80-20 for the original
Eng dub ain't even good
Fun Frieza Fact: He's always naked
Untrue. He is wearing armor.
@@Celestia282 Nah, he's just so narcissistic that he modelled his troops armor off his own body. Notice how it transforms with him.
Lol. The disrespect to Masako Nozawa took me out of the video a bit.
TFS specifically chose MasakoX as the voice for abridged Goku because his voice work was inspired by the Japanese voice.
A LOT of people like the Japanese voice.
1:40 Nah the sub is far better than the original dub if you actually analyze both of them, also Masako Nozawa does a great job at voicing Goku.
I still like dub better lol
I don't have problem with goku's Japanese voice but most people dont like it also dub is on same level as sub but it has some mistranslation
I would say Yu Yu Hakusho, Trigun, Samurai Champloo and Cowboy Bebop are great in English dub as well.
I had a Cowboy Bebop movie dvd and it always defaulted to Japanese if I forgot to change it. The voice actor playing The Amazing Edward said their lines directly with none of the off the walls crazy energy that the English dub did that made me love Ed.
I'm glad someone said Yu Yu Hakusho because to me it's the best English dub.
Code Geass has the best dub I've ever seen
If I recall correctly, even the creator of Cowboy Bebop himself said that the English dub was better.
@@arcticbanana66 It's on the short list of anime where the US influence is so heavy English feels appropriate.
I don't think I'll ever really get over the fact that they got LITTLE KURIBOH of all people to voice Freeza in there abridged series. The Godfather of Internet Abridged Series himself, and he's just as amazing here as he is with his Yu-Gi-Oh Abridged Series.
SPEAKING OF the Godfather of Abridged Series, Y'ALL GOTTA REACT TO THE **TRUE** OG!
Yeah, I'm talking about the Ghost Stories dub.
Frieza Fact: In another Toriyama manga named ''Nekomajin Z'', we see that Frieza had a son named ''Kuriza''.
I watched DBZ in sub and I don't regret it.
the problem with dbz in subb vs dubb isnt the voice actress (def not goku VA) but the fact the dubb changed goku into a psuedo superman clone and that's NOT who he is.
Same dub which at this point of the series was going out of its way of trying to have zero kills adding breathing noises to dead characters to make sure they look alive or same dub who had lines (which they make fun of in this episode) added like how dodorio was aiming for older namekian and not child or dende wishing his family got away after this episode and gohan and bulma assuring him they did. This all comes from ocean dub btw(first English dub which gave u rock the dragon and was technically done by funimation). Also nozawa isn’t bad even Sean schimmel takes inspiration from her just 80+ year old women who has been doing her job for nearly 40 years. But dubs stans don’t understand that now do they.
Now you know how dub fans feel every time a sub purist shits on it
@@az639 facts
my favorite bit of trivia about this episode is the line about the cappuccino machine for the ship is lifted directly out of the official dub, they just kept it the same because it was already ridiculous. lol
In all Honesty:
A Muffin Button would be Dope.
That is a HOT take. Nozawa is a fantastic actress.
0:05 "Frieza, got a tale. Unlike the rest of the saiyans" He couldn't help but fuck up
For those of you who don’t know, Briefs’ comment about the cappuccino maker is actually in the original show.
6:12 fun fact TFS pulled this line from an old Marvel comic
What Pile of garbage did Marvel have that line?! That sounds like something that you'd hear the king pin say in a badly written daredevil comic.
@lornbaker1083 Marvel dates back to 1939. The line was from one of the fantastic four comics. Mr. Fantastic says it. It was supposed to be romantic and it kind of was back then. Obviously it didn't stand the test of time. You can find all sorts of stuff in old comics that would never be seen today. Or stuff that meant something totally different.
Why’d it take me this long to realize Bulma’s dad is played by Ben, the same guy who plays Anderson in Hellsing Ultimate Abridged
if i remember that last scene is when asteroids damage the ship so goku has to fix it by putting a space suit to walk on the outside of the ship, basically filler in between his departure from earth to namek.
Love how the Namekians just have Team Fortress 2 character death screams when they're killed.
Yall need to stop talking over these jokes, if you pause to talk about a joke then I recommend rewinding ten seconds to make sure you didnt miss anything before pausing like at the beginning here
While Saiyans are able to resist the vacuum of space, they cannot breathe because they need oxygen.
H Man is right, Saiyans can't survive in space. They don't EXPLODE or FREEZE in space... but they still can't breathe. They CAN hold their breath much longer than humans, for several minutes. But after that, they die. Goku is wearing a space suit in that shot at the end, it's from a filler episode where he has to fire a Kamehameha to alter the trajectory of the ship so it doesn't crash into that star.
Frieza was Voiced by a woman in the Ocean and Funimation dubs, but a Male in Kai
Chris Ayer’s was the most prominent Voice Actor until his passing a few years ago
Fun Freeza fact: he's actually as evil as he is because he's a mutant version of his race. His whole family line is.
@@sugartoothYT it can always be considered 2nd degree canon, true untill proven wrong by the main series
"I don't think this is a hot take" I very much think it is haha
Nope. Frieza in both Japanese and english is voiced by a guy, at least in the modern era 2010s and onward. However, recently or last year, the english voice actor who's been doing the voice for frieza for years now has sadly passed away.
Luffy is litterally voiced by an old woman who also voices krillin. Ruff you are incorrect. Goku's Seiyu is the old lady with the most powerful voice in the universe.
Ruff still having the bad subs/dubs takes. Still hasn't changed from back when his channel was known as RufflesTV.
What were some other bad takes he had?
You're gonna get so much hate for your opinions on the Japanese voice actor for Goku. She's treasured by the community.
Freeza's race is officially called Freeza race
Freeza and his family are all more powerful than the average members of their race because they're mutants
The Freeza race is supposedly genderless/asexual but they're still referred as "he/him" just like the Namekians
Put a pin in the muffin button, cause it does come full circle.
Also, no, that is a hot take. Masako Nozawa, the seiyuu for Goku is a a legend; there's a reason the DBZA actor for Goku is called MasakoX. If you prefer the dub, more power to you, but I'd be careful with the disrespect. That's all I'm saying.
All that aside, this is where DBZA really hits its stride, in my opinion. Not that the previous episodes sucked, but things really start coming together in the Namek saga.
1:24 -1:34 from the first dub done by Funimation in the late 90s until Dragon Ball Z Kai Frieza was indeed voiced by a woman, Linda Young.
Then when they started Kai some characters were recast and Young was replaced by Chris Ayres who sadly passed away in 2021 due to pulmonary disease.
I love Linda Young as Frieza because her voice for the character was my childhood but I can acknowledge that objectively, Ayres Frieza is so much better.
Also, Daman Mills now voices Frieza and mimics Ayres voice. Also also, while the dub of DBZ is iconic for many reasons, it is a hot take to say the dub is better than the sub. 10:01 I never knew that, he is actually on the ship.
From this point on make sure not to end your viewing early like you almost did. Also, there will be secret images hidden in every Solar Flare.
Frieza's transformations are actually in reverse. His 'final' form is actually his original (base) form, and his other forms were created in order to keep his power under control. All we know about his race is that he and his father were 'mutants' which was the reason for their unnaturally high power from birth. Frieza's power, if you include DBSuper, can be multiplied hundreds of times over if effort is put into training for at least four months, trumping the Saiyans Zenkai Boosts and being basically broken. I don't prefer to include Super, because ( in my opinion ) they completely desecrated the story, but there you go. -Frieza Facts
I watch in the sub before the dub more often than not (mostly because dub loses things in translation), and the only issue I really have is the fact that Goten, Gohan, and Goku all have the same voice actress and sometimes it's very noticable.
Will you guys react to the normal dbz after this ?
I mean... Theres no buu saga in dbza
MasakoX from TFS tried to imitate Goku's dub VA
Masako Nozawa is a frkin legend
Frieza has some of the best one-liners ever.
Really nails the Evil Tyrant of the Galaxy
Such a majestic space duck 😅
Freeza fact: he never trained for his entire life, till he was killed.
10:20 I mean Saiyan body can survive extreme pressures etc of space, they just suffocate XDD…. so theoretically if he hold his breath…. hahahahah 😂❤
Y'all should really watch the Bardok special. It sets up season 2 & gets referenced a few times
He was in a spacesuit and he kamehameha'd the sun to change the spaceship's direction
I would just recommend that when pausing for commentary that the vid be moved back 10 seconds or so. Missed an entire joke in the beginning
Boy the sub vs dub is debatable within the Anime community even with the Dragon Ball community. Like the voice actress for Goku is iconic and plays his sons too so to hear u say that is an opinion for sure. Only saying this cus being a fan of DBZ since the 90s and hearing the same conversations is alway back and forth but majority seem to like the sub better.
"This is the best episode so far"
yeah, you're probably going to be saying that a lot. the quality just goes up from here!
Disagree with Masako Nozawa as Goku, she does such a great job with capturing Goku's essence. I would say a lot better than some of the original English Dubs.
I initially was on the same boat of "ew, Goku's Japanese voice sounds so weird, it's not deep", but after watching all of Dragon Ball Super subbed, I was sold on it.
I'm gonna need ya'll to be appreciating the absolute talent and accuracy of the Abridged voice acting of Freeza and most of the main characters (minus Goku) especially from this point forward in episodes!
The dub doesn't come even close to the level of quality of the original japanese, some of the best Seiyuu in the industry all worked on dragon ball
Doctor brief's wife is a robot or android
Frieza(Freeza) Fact: Prior to this, it's said that frieza never trained a day in his life and was just naturally born with his ungodly powers
I made a separate comment about Masako Nozawa specifically but on your other point about the dub being better than the sub generally.. it's kind of a matter of perspective. DBZ has A LOT of English language dubs. but the one you'll prolly end up watching is the 2005 remake of the Funimation dub, since it's the most widely available and I'm pretty sure the only one still sold. The uncensored version of the funimation dub is good, it's fully watchable, but imo the original Japanese has a better soundtrack and better sound design in general. And if you already enjoy subs, I'd fully say there's no reason not to watch it. A version of dragonball Z with the Japanese soundtrack and the US voices is a thing but it was a bonus on a very expensive boxset, that I'm not even sure if they make anymore. So I'd still say go with the Japanese versions.
The director/one of the writers of this series, Kaiserneko, is openly gay btw. So some of the more risky jokes, while dated, are all made in good faith.
Fun fact about frieza :- his race official name is frieza race
I don't know who came up with Arcosian, but I prefer it over "Frieza Race."
To be fair, Bulma's mom is living in luxury off her sugar daddy. The least she can do is make him a sandwich.
I have no idea if she's rich on her own or not. I'm guessing she is and he uses her money for his inventions. Albeit, inventions that make them extremely rich.
1:30 in.
You get to the sub/dub arguments for DBZ.
Im hoping you're aware by now that Goku is, has, and always was, voiced by an old Japanese woman; Masako Something. Or Its most likely Sean Schemmel in English.
Many variations of DBZ exist; so many, that the narrative has been wound into knowledge of the plurality of humanity.
4:06 remenber that joke, seriously
You guys should watch the animated pilot “Lackadaisy”
Frieza Fact: Frieza is the most powerful being in the Universe. And his Father and Brother are even MORE powerful than that! DBZ has a lot of logic like this.
Sub is GREAT,
I love both sub and dub because they both have their advantages. the community is like a 45 / 55 splitt on the matter leaning towards the dub.
Both sub and dub of dbz is awesome but maan the english dub has my heart🙌🏾
Funny Ruff watches DBZ in dub because in sub Krillins voice is Luffy. And Luffy's voiced by a woman as well. But aside from the sexist remarks, this is great.
Freeza fact the voice actor recently died
I can respect people's different opinions but I don't really like it when they state them like fact and talking down about other the sub, especially about as someone as famous and legendary as Masako Nozawa.
Wait till he meets goku with that count
If you want to watch this series in english, you watch the Kai version.
- MUCH better pacing.
- MUCH better dub.
Example: in Episode 98 of Dragon Ball Kai, Trunks defeats the Androids and Cell in the future. In Episode 98 of Dragon Ball Z, GOKU IS STILL FIGHTING FREEZA ON NAMEK!!!
First two anime I can think of where dub is a must are Ghost Stories and Panty and Stocking with Garterbelt. That's because they have changed lines for the sake of comedy, and the end result was overall superior products. Hell, Ghost Stories is barely even the same show!
DBZ’s dub often adds subtext that wasn’t there in the original. It’s one of those series where you DEFINITELY need the sub.
@@wakkaseta8351 agreed lol. Glad that Stephanie Nadolyn didn't voice adult Goku, adult Gohan, Goten, Bardock, and Turles lmao.
Freeza fact: Freeza is unnaturally strong for his race, and never had to train for any of his power shown in dbz.

They should probably finish the show first...
@WakkaSeta Hey they need to pay bills and eat too. I personally don't care if they finish DBZA. The end of the Cell saga felt like the end for the show. We get content for free they can do what they want 😂
