Jean Cras - Piano Concerto (audio + sheet music)

  • Grand flourishes by the piano and the answering orchestra (mainly the brass) make up the first gestures of this piano concerto. The work seems to proceed in 'awkward' idea-blocks. It is quite different from his Legend for piano and orchestra - at once more arresting and of serious mien yet splendid in an out-flowering of display to be found also in the five Saint-Saens piano concertos.
There is a darkly reflective meander of a central movement - a typically Celtic night-scene.
The finale's 'call to arms' is in the form of a rapid light-tongued fanfare touched with sea and a pastoral contentment which has not lost sight and sound of the dance.
The work, oddly enough, served to call up memories of catchy Portuguese folk dances as in the orchestral music of Joly Braga Santos and Luis de Freitas Branco.

Thanks for posting. What a gem - great sense of the piano. To think he had a full time military career and still had the time, motivation, talent and skill to compose works like this!

I have found that if a work makes it to CZcams, somebody thought it was good enough to record, and someone thought enough of it to upload it. I very seldom don't like it myself. So I confirm I like this work. It has gotten impossible for me to keep up with all the new pieces I am seeing. I simply mark them so I can revisit them.

Bravo! Delightful concerto! This one should be mainstream, no hidden from sight. Magnificent!

Thanks for posting it. Great concerto and great performance, really. I actually don't understand why this wonderful symphonic piece is not yet known and performed as well. But thanks a lot

Nice! It's good to see that some composers weren't following that path of serialism during this time.

The overwhelming majority of composers weren't writing dodecaphonic music in in 1931, or after. Still, that in no way argues for the exhumation of of this DOA concerto and its ilk.

I think it's nice that more obscure composers are being performed, if only to just provide an historical record. Also (while this composer doesn't apply) if this didn't occur (regardless of 'quality') we'd be left with 3 centuries of only dead beaugouis white men to listen to

Thank-you for sharing. For the sake of correctness I think you mean the Legend for Cello and orchestra.
