The original lyrics and melody were written by Lou Reed, but the piano part and the orchestration were done by Mick Ronson. Mick was David Bowie's guitarist in The spiders from mars and the were producers of the record for Lou Reed. I think the coda of the song is one the more beautiful rock piano sections in all of rock.

@@Mr6stringchaos curious as to how you reached that conclusion. All the documents and interviews I have read say that Mick Ronson played piano and orchestrated the song. Bowie is credited with keyboards and backing vocals. Of course he also produced it with Mick.
The ending part always gets me, idk what it is, but it's powerful and sad at the same time
This is the theme song in the movie Perfect Days, but it's a hauntingly beautiful piano version (slightly different, but tear jerking. Just look up ''perfect day komorebi version''
