    “Walk This Way” is Aerosmith’s song. The story goes: Run DMC used the actual vinyl record (Aerosmith/“Toys In The Attic” album) to scratch with on the turntable for years not knowing anything about the band or who they were! After they (RDMC) started gaining fame & started recording, someone noticed the vinyl LP they were using & got the idea to get in touch w/the actual band Aerosmith for a collaboration & the rest is history!👍🏼

    • @OwenRona
      @OwenRona Před 3 lety +4

      Very true, but I don’t think it was racial. I think it was more a sub-culture thing because the separation also happened in other countries where there were no “White vs Black people”. It was more like the Rockers vs Hip Hop/Rappers.
      This collab single handedly breached that divisive wall between the two groups just like Steve Tyler did early in the video. This single literally has a place in human history. It’s a little sad that the context is getting lost to the later generations.

    @seasickviking Před 3 lety +54

    This story is basically goes like this: Aerosmith originally made the song way back in the 1970s. Back in 1975, I think. In the 80s, Run-DMC made a rap-version as a cover in the mid-80s. As it happens, said cover was permitted by record label, but Aerosmith itself wasn't aware. The Run-DMC version became EXTREMELY popular because it was a blend of rap and a popular rock N roll song. Steven Tyler (the singer), who had been in rehab at the time, managed to hear their version and told Joe Perry (the guitarist) to get in contact with Run-DMC to arrange a meet. Run-DMC found out Tyler wanted to meet them, only to find out later that their manager hadn't gotten Aerosmith's blessing for the cover--just the record label's. When the groups finally met after Tyler graduated from rehab, Run-DMC expected to be sued, not only for Aerosmith to give their blessing, but Tyler to pitch the idea for Run-DMC to join them on an Aerosmith comeback tour. While the tour boosted Run-DMC's name into legendary status, it also acted as a diving board for Aerosmith, who then sent of the top three best selling albums of their career: PUMP, GET A GRIP, & PERMANENT VACATION.

    As everyone mentioned, this is the first rap/rock collab. Aerosmith came out with this song in... I want to say 1975. They were already half way down the road to obscurity from internal issues with the band, drugs, etc. Run DMC effectively brought this band back to life with collaborating with them on this song (which is Aerosmith's song). Aerosmith went on to score a top 10 album a year later after this was dropped. And keep in mind that this was back when rap and rock were severely polarized, where it was all but taboo for one side to like the other, with the exception being the Beastie Boys.
    By the way.. this happened in 1986. The only green screen work anyone had back then was being a weatherman for the news! This was all live when you went on location to shoot music videos! Oh, and Addidas being back then? They go back farther, but it was Run DMC that made them BIG in the 80s.

    I remember growing up with this, my dad was an Aerosmith fan so I knew the song growing up BUT I was in LOVE/raised with the Run DMC version and I feel they ALL killed it.

  • @revevsetcandwhatnot8484

    Rick Rubin, one of the founders of Def Jam records (along with Russell Simmons), who had Run DMC on the label, convinced them to do it. They not only didn't want to, after they agreed, they had to be persuaded to sing the original lyrics instead of rapping their own stuff over it. As commented previously, this opened a lot of minds, at the time, both ways, across rock and rap (which wasn't called hip-hop back then) fans.

    They created this hybrid because of the remix RUN DMC did of this Aerosmith song. The beginning of this video with them not liking each other was a metaphor for the schism between rock and rap, hence the wall that gets broken down and by the end of it, they are on tour together. Listen to Bring The Noise, by Anthrax and Public Enemy. Greatest rap Rock hybrid and a birth point for what came to be Rapcore music.

    The thing is, back when I was digging Aerosmith as a young person, everyone told you you either were a hip hop kid or you were a rock kid (or of course country kid but I was not going to go there). I can't explain to you how big the barrier was between the two types of music. It was not only racial and urban vs suburban and everything, it was literally like a tribal thing, you weren't allowed to like both, it was considered ridiculous for you to enjoy both types of music. It was like a culture war and it was very weird, looking back.. but then this collab happened and literally changed the face of music. That is why you had people like Linkin Park and Limp Bizkit and Korn who were able to mix hip hop and rock together, and it paved the way for how music has evolved since then so that there are not these big lines in between everybody, and people just make music that appeals to them. The impact of this collaboration cannot be overstated, it brought hip hop into the eyes of all of the rock kids and told us it was okay to learn about hip hop, and it took rap into the rock world so that rappers were able to listen to rock without feeling like they were betraying their people or whatever, there was all this weird s*** going on between everybody, cuz literally you had adults telling you that if you listened to hip hop and you are from a rock family that you were betraying your people or some stupid s*** ... and I don't know if it was vice versa but I know that my ex who is Black didn't listen to rock her whole life because you either listened to Hip Hop or you listened to nothing... and then she heard this song and then she heard some other collaba afterwards and got to listen to rock. The amount of mutual understanding and appreciation that came out of this collaboration is not something you could actually put on paper. It's more important than I can state, because without hip hop breaking into more of a mainstream space that had been held by Rock for like 40 years, hip hop probably wouldn't have ended up being the overpowered, massively popular movement that it has become where everybody listens to it, and honestly I think you can credit this collaboration for that even happening. And for making it possible for people like Lil Nas X to collab between hip hop and country since then, because all these walls got broken down. It was really an incredible moment in music history.

    For a helluva lot of suburban white kids this was their first introduction to Run DMC. It brought two groups a lot closer, because it helped a lot of people see eachother as friends on equal grounds of respect. That feeling was awesome. Both groups had admiration for eachother. Adidas Superstars came out in 1969 and in the 70s most of the NBA players wore them. Afterwards the shoes advanced from courts to the streets and became part of fashion. Run DMC wore them without any laces and pushing the tongue out. They even released a song called My Adidas in 1986, on the same album they covered this Aerosmith song. The 80s Superstars were the originals, the ones Adidas sells now are known as Superstar II's. Recently they also released the 50th anniversary model Superstar 2020.

    All rock, punk, and rap were connected in the 80's and they all worked together. Rap got out with the help of the DIY punk recording studios and self built distribution and later thrash metal was helped out by rap labels and studios.
    The idea that all these scenes in the late 70's and 80's were separate was a recent revisionist myth.
    People like KRS-1 were as respected as Jello Biafra in the punk community and people like Ice T or Public Enemy were always playing at punk shows or doing collaborations.
    The funniest thing is one of the most important independent producers of the 80's and 90's rap scene was also one of the most important of the thrash metal scene and the guy was Asian.
    Only corporate branding and later image control divided these groups among fans.
