Got my first Data Analyst job this month that I’ll be starting Monday. I landed this position with no projects and no experience at all, just bachelors degree in Health Informatics and google data analytics certificate and doing pretty well on the interview. 🤷🏾♂️💯 best of luck to everyone
Congrats! How did the job posting look like? What were some questions you got during the interview?
congrats!!!
@@Aby-zy4ku they were looking for someone with 1-2 years of experience. It’s a hospital so I guess my background in Health Informatics impressed them too. They didn’t ask of any projects or test me at the interview. The questions they asked were mostly behavioral. Some few questions about the data analysis tools I’ve used in the past and so on.
@Andrews Kusi congrats on the new role! This is awesome to hear how you landed it with the google certificate and your prior experience in health informatics!!
@@LukeBarousse Thank you Luke
Wow I just saw this, thank you so much for featuring me! That project was an immense amount of work so really appreciate the good sentiment!
Emiliano!! No problem at all, awesome work on this project my dude; so fortunate to share it here!
*Thank you so much for featuring my CZcams channel in your video, Luke!* 🙏
No probs at all, Sven! Thanks for sharing your experience!!
Thank you very much for this video and thanks to all the people that allow your data portfolio to be shared. I'm in the process of creating my first data project, and these examples helped me a lot.
LOLOLOL Loving the cameo. Also the personal connection that the people had with the projects they were working on really brought the projects home
Ha, glad you liked the Cameo! 😂 I probably should have asked first 😜
@LukeBarousse - Please consider doing a video on practical ‘step-by-step’ guidance on how to present your findings as a data professional. For example, for every presentation I must lead, I ask myself these questions, I am sure not to overlook these steps, I make sure I know XYZ about the data, etc. I struggle with preparing for meetings with C-Suite. I always wonder, “What, exactly, should I say to them?”. Real world examples are always helpful. Thank you so much for your work.
I am still looking for my first data job. Just graduated from BloomTech and wanted to work on some more projects to give me a stronger chance of being hired. Thank you for these suggestions.
You are simply one of the best Data Analyst teaching channels on CZcams. God Bless You buddy :)
Aw thanks so much for this Arjun!
You do such a great job on your videos, I find myself not even trying to skip through the sponsor section of the video and wanting to watch that section as well.
Thanks for this Ken! Glad you are enjoying my content!
As always, valuable and informative Luke. Great job, keep up the quality work
Aw thanks so much for this!!
Luke, you totally rock! Love these videos
This is super insightful. Thanks, Luke. Would you ever consider doing a video on the step-by-step process of how to approach creating a project? I want to begin working on projects for my portfolio but the process seems overwhelming and I'm afraid I'll miss out on crucial steps due to lacking knowledge in certain areas.
Thanks, Luke! this video is super useful and inspiring, I am setting my goal to complete a project like this.
Heck yeah, good luck with the project!
Hi Luke, Thanks for sharing, this is probably the first time I will be hitting the like button on any CZcams video. This one really got to me, and I appreciate the effort you made in putting this together.
Aw heck yeah! Glad I could share these portfolio projects from these talented data nerds!
Thanks for the great video, Luke! This is very helpful 💯
So glad this was helpful, Geronimo!
Luke always killing it! 💪😁
😜 Trying to keep up with you my dude!!
I am taking the Google data analytics certificate course. When I learn more id like to do a project around the homeless problem, which is weird considering I am homeless myself at the moment. I enjoy your channel Luke. Keep up the good work!

Ahhh I’m late to the party! 🤯 These projects are AMAZING🔥. Loved the ‘going above and beyond’ spirit!! I got such a big dose of inspiration.. gotta get back to my projects now! 🏃♀️🤣
Ha! I felt the same about getting back to the projects... they put my projects to shame!
Excellent video. This is the type of advice I’m looking for. Thanks
Glad it was helpful, Tapiwa!!
It's wild how new college students don't know these fields exist I remember being a polysci student twisting all my papers into what I vaguely understood was systems analysis to make predictions.. turns out I was into data science back then I didn't know what to call it or how to pursue it
Yeah so true... tbh I worked in a data analyst type role and didn't even know it was working in the realm of data science... so I can really relate to this.
Same here!

I did not realize how much data political science were exposed too. Had a buddy who worked on a campaign for his senior internship, the main thing he did was make sql queries.
This was a great video. Very informative. Thank you.
Glad you found it informative, Umesh!
Very nice topic! Very helpful if you want to start working in your own portofolio. Thanks for the video!

Aw thank you so much for this thoughtful note! Glad you're getting use out of the videos!
Thu Vu is the best🙌🏼
This is exactly what I was planning to do. Selected few of the unique problems for my project which everyone is seeing on the news but very less think of solving it. I already had a project similar to the avocado project in collaboration with my 2other classmates where we had the ML, email verification, web session session allotment, a beautiful frontend defining the details in the simplest way, but I am looking so something on my own. And I also learned something which might be a good idea which is "if you are being lazy in learning start teaching that to others" in that way I will research on that and will be able to master it. Let's see what's the future holds for me. But I am confident that I am gonna do good in future 😊. Have plans to open a you tube channel. Starting to talk about tableau coz I am really passionate about the visualizations.
Heck yeah, thanks for sharing your project experience Santos’s!! Good luck with your future endeavors, highly recommend starting the CZcams channel!

Great to see what others are working on and what tech they are using. Seems like Python is becoming more widely used not just SQL.
Yeah, I think Python is def catching up with SQL

At the moment, I'm leaving my job, and I want to add my experience in management (I'm a customer experience coordinator) with data that I'm passionate about and have been using for a long time;
I want this upgrade for my customer service coordination career, operations with BI is the combo.

I'm new to data science. I find your videos as well as Shashank's videos extremely useful. Thanks Luke
Well welcome to the community, glad you are finding them useful!

Hi, Luke. Fantastic video! May I ask where to find a unique dataset? I found it may be too time consuming and difficult to collect data by myself
Great breakdown, like morning brew too
thank you so much!🙏
Hey Luke, I've another suggestion. How about sharing links of some projects, like some honorable mentions that couldn't make up to the video , but would be good for us to look upto? It would be really helpful. Cheers!!
I like this idea!! Let me see what I can do, looking to make a spreadsheet or something to share these projects with the channel.
Hi Luke, got my first interview with the firm, despite not having a project they wanted to hire me, and weren’t even interested in projects I Would have done. They have seen my interest in analytics and they way I was describing each stage of data cleaning and storytelling.
Not sure but I’ll likely be hired as an intern.
Thank you very much
This is awesome to hear Konstantin!! Here's to hoping for the intership, Konstantin! 🙏🏼

I just saw your course on Power BI in datacamp! I'm planning on taking it.

To help summarize this great video, here are the Key tips to make your project stand out: 👇
1- Projects that help other people
2- A dataset that is unique and has a common interest with the person
3- Coding everyone can do, summarizing and visualizing data is what showcase YOU
4- Create your own data analysis ecosystem (Your own dataset, insights, and all the above points)
All are free to add, edit or enhance the above points 🙏
Love the Content, It's Very helpful to Build a Better Career. 👌

This is really nice projects to know about, thanks for making this video. I have one question where do these people got the data from? Did they use any scrapers and also to build the dashboard like this one should use BI tool or no code tool ?
Thanks actually I am new to data analytics, learning on my own

Great, I'll read up on Valentin's project.
Heck yeah! Check it out!

I'm currently doing my google certificate in data analytics, however, up until i watched your videox i didn't realise that there was this much that went into landing a job in data anlytics, I don't know where to start now
Somehow you just know how (and when) to come up in my algorithm… this is exactly what I needed to know upon trying to land a Data Analyst position… I needed a direction on my capstone project and this was it! Thank you!
Ha! I'm glad this video could help, good luck with the project!
love how you have Tina and Shash in the background like easter eggs =)
Ha! Trying to hide them!
Luke, this question isn't related to taking on data projects but rather a concept: Data Analytics Life Cycle. Do you utilize the CRISP-DM model when conducting your projects in a professional setting? I'm currently taking a graduate course and wanted to know your thoughts. Thanks for your content, it's been a great help in my career.
I don't use CRISP-DM in my projects, but it looks like a good framework to know of and learn.
I've failed you, I missed your two last uploads. But now I'm catching up! Great content as always. I don't have a degree, and I'm working in digital analytics after completing the Google certificate and while taking some courses. Tomorrow I have an interview for the Disney regional BI team, as well as another one for a senior analyst role for a global marketing agency. So good things are happening in south america job market.
Emanuel, this is so awesome to hear! Good luck on the interviews my dude, I’m sure you are going to do well! Thanks for tuning into my content!
After completing Google Certificate did you do any projects , i am about to complete the course i don't have prior experience and i have done a course on MySQL bootcamp, i am kind of scared will i get any job cuz its new and i am not even sure if i am right for this stream.

Do you guys know how long will the project take? Maybe 2-3 months? I'm thinking of starting my own SQL-Tableau project.
Hey Luke! Was wondering if you could do a video or a simple recommendation on some good books for people interested in data analytics. I’m on part 4 of the google certificate and am interested in reading some useful books in my free time! Thanks ahead of time!
Yeah let me see what I can do on this topic, def something i'm interested in sharing!
Hi great video really helpful, unrelated note to the video but what databases will you recommend for a startup to manage data across Africa
Thanks! And it really depends what data your tyring to store. If its mostly tabular than I'm a fan of Postgres... but that's just personal opinion and there really are a lot of good options. I made a whole video on my recommendations:
czcams.com/video/GEBzsz8ZSXs/video.html
Hi. How would one get the dataset for the first project? I have some ideas for is as well. But how to get a good, relevant dataset on jobs and skills?
Hey Luke, long time from your last video, is everything ok? Would like to see you cover the topic of a/b tests in the future🙂
Hey! Yeah everything is good! New video coming out on Monday… I got a little behind due to traveling and collabs, but hope to return to normal soon!! Also thank you for the video recommendation, let me see what I can do on this!
Luke, any statistic methods that we should know before going for interviews? Thank you
I think a basic understanding in probability and statistics is good enough. I actually have an upcomign video on this so stay tuned
Hey Luke. I have a question. How do you use same mouse and keyboard for both laptop and desktop computer? Thanks for great content.
My Laptop is connected to those monitors, so it just goes through the laptop
Hello, I am really impressed by the projects. This summer I started my pathway to become a data scientist, following Luke's steps. I would like to make a project similar to the one from Milano, but for job market in Poland, especially student job market. Could anybody give me an advice, how to jump into writing a kind of crawler, getting the keywords from job offers? I already know Excel, SQL, Power BI tools and basics of R (I was writing a project about decision trees in R). I know that my programming skills aren't good enough to make this project even this summer, but I would like to know which direction to follow and get some learning resources that may help me. For now, coding something that will crawl through the web sounds impossible to me :)
with all that knowledge... my advice is just finish it! Best Luck!!
Hi Luke, love the videos. I was wondering after completing the google analytics cert, should I start doing projects? And how many projects should I do?
I highly recommend getting into projects. I don't think you should worry about number of projects but quality of projects and that they are helping you learn new skills
@@LukeBarousse thanks Luke for getting back to me. I’ll do projects after the google cert 🤙
Hi Luke, fantastic video. I am from the UK and have recently decided to change my career and become a Data Analyst. Would you recommend completing the google data analytics course as the first step? I would love to learn data analytics skills and land my first role. Would you be able to provide a few tips on the starting point? much appreciated. Thank you.
Yeah I think you found my follow on video that answers your question. (judging by your comment on my How I would learn to be a Data Analyst). But if not, yeah, I recommend starting with the google certificate.
thanks
Hi Luke, Thank you for all the great job videos!
I'm working at a small company that manages data only using Excel.
Do you have any plan to make a video about gathering data from multiple Excel sources automatically using Python?
Good luck, and keep up the great work!
Hey Rai Kou, let me see what I can do on this topic, thanks for the suggestion and also thanks for the positive vibes!!
I want to get involved with football/soccer metrics, I think that will be the area I’ll be most passionate about and hopefully I can create something useful for others
Always great to go with a project that is aligned with your passion!
Long term listener first time caller. I think what's lacking on this channel & others similar is the narrowed focus on SQL & a BI tool. That may be enough for a Business Analyst job, but you're going to be expected to know a lot more for a Data Analyst position, especially at a tech company or you will suffer from imposter syndrome.
Thanks for sharing this perspective, def will try in the future to include different tools
can i run excel in system tray and display just the user form on the screen? I don't want the users to mess up the excel file. I just want to get the job done via user form like standalone app. i dont want excel to be displayed on screen or task bar.
Please I'm just starting up as a Data Analyst and I'm starting with Excel, where can I find Excel Problems to solve or Excel projects that I can use to build my portfolio to showcase during interview.
i am learning excel and i want excel projects for data analysis but you share only related to SQL
I am going to give you good news about my story. But let me tell you one thing upfront, please keep up your youtube efforts. You are helping people beyond your comprehension.
Aw thanks for the positive vibes Javed!! Excited to hear the good news about your story
I think I speak for everybody when I say everybody likes you bro. Thanks for the cool channel.
My dude, thanks so much for the positivity and kind words! 🤙🏼
should the portfolio always be on github or its ok to open my own domain and put my portfolio there? Thanks Luke for the help u have given us. You are an awesome brother.
Yeah perfectly fine to not be on github; for code I feel it's the best place to host as it's made for this... but then if you're doing something else then a portfolio website would be better. I have a video on portfolio websites
These projects are amazing!
I have a question though. Say I’ve just finished a project, and the core of it is made with SQL.. what platform can I showcase the code at? As far as I know, github and notebooks are for programming languages like python and r.. how about SQL?
I would say you can write it in a readme if it's not that long, but following for Luke's response lol
F
Yeah, sql is perfectly fine to be shared on GitHub. That’s how Valentin shared his SQL code. I also agree with Laia that you could use the readme to highlight specific things about the code you want to highlight
I use Medium to publish the story part, and within that hyperlink to my SQL in GitHub. Medium has a simple GitHub snippet integration too so if you want to break your code into pieces to explain what you're doing/why in the story you can do that as well!
Great video! It's been a year since this one, I think you should make a new one! 💙
hi luke, have you tried knime analytics platform? and what's your opinion on low coding data science.?
I think they are a viable option and seen them used by members I work with... just don't feel that things like this are as highly stressed as tools like Excel, SQL, Python, R, Power BI, and/or Tableau
I got my first data analyst role without a degree and the project from a previous job help land my job.
Heck yeah! I’m looking for people like you, Pito!! Is the project shareable?!?

Hi, Luke!
Great content, as usual! I have just started the Google certificate. I was wondering how possible (if possible at all) it would be to get a remote job from a US-based company for someone from Chile, or do you know anyone who would know this?
Thanks!
Hey Sebastian, this is a topic i've been trying to research but haven't found much information on. Will share if I get any information on this!
@@LukeBarousse I just finished the DA Google Certification and about to do 1-3 projects to get some more experience under my belt while still getting my resume up on linkedin in the meantime. This is my big question too. Relating to the Avacado project, all of this can be done in Excel, from data cleaning to the reports without having to type a single code. What makes SQL so special to land a data analyst job? I feel like I'm missing something, but none of the projects mentioned here are hard to do within Excel itself. I know Excel can lag the bigger the file gets, so I can then understand why SQL Table would work better. But everywhere I look people are cleaning data on Excel and storing it as tables on SQL. There's a few queries to pull data, however it's faster to get the solutions to these queries on Excel through the formulas.
Not sure if you checked it out, but I have a video on How I use SQL; think it'll answer the difference on why this tool is important
@@LukeBarousse Thanks, had a look at the video. It gives a lot of insight as to why SQL is relevant. Seems like Excel is good if you have smaller sets of data and if there is a lot of data across multiple sources then SQL is best.
How to become associate product manager , please make a video on this topic
let me see what I can do on this
I already have 3 ideas I want to do when I finish my certificate… so we’ll see hopefully it’ll get me an entry level job.
Heck yeah! Love to hear this! Good luck with the project!
Are all of these projects doable after only doing the google certificate?
I love fragrances and that's something I've been really wanted to look into, but I can't find a sufficient enough data set. can anyone help? the data I found just isn't enough for major analysis. things like release dates, ratings, region sales etc.
Yeah sometimes with something that specific you may have to web scrape the data yourself... it's inconvenient, but may be the best choice
how and where did the first guy get the data from?
i want to build project similar to SkillQuery but for my region can someone explain me end to end process of it.
Hi Luke I was wondering if you were able to find any people who were able to land jobs in data analytics without a degree? Hopefully using the google certification
I'm still intending to look into this more, just got a little side tracked. Should have more info on this in the near future
