A17 surviving a self-destruct doesn't make sense, but the manga explains it better. In the manga A17 just creates the biggest most powerful explosion he can to cancel Jirens blast, and hides under the rubble. Since nobody can sense his energy, he can just play dead to ensure Universe 7 still has higher numbers.
He actually planned it with Frieza in the manga. And he explains to Krillin that he can't self-destruct anymore because of Krillins wish at the end of cell saga to remove the explosive from androids.

well, seeing how 17 is still alive, its clear he didnt actually "self-destruct." It's no different from the manga. people thought he self-destructed, but he didnt.
@@saeres9288 but the difference in manga is that he purposely made a plan to fake self-destructing with Frieza and stay hidden while Frieza takes out himself, Goku and Jiren. It is only after Frieza yeets all of them out and Goku says "but there's no one left" that he reveals himself. In anime he says he took a chance and survived.
I loved how they did Frieza in this. He's basically the circumstantial anti hero. He realizes that whatever villainous plans he has will be meaningless if their universe is erased, so he plays nice with his group and helps out. Of course fully saturated in his sass and sarcasm. Along with that, as much as he hates to admit it, he appreciates Goku and realizes he wouldn't be as powerful as he was now if it wasn't for Goku pushing him. Frieza keeps him up and fighting because he knows it's their only chance. He has no delusions he can win on his own. Don't mean he wouldn't relish the day he has a chance to kill Goku of course. I just love his commentary in this arch. "Dance for us, monkey" and "my, he is tall" were my favs

I love that frieza, evil emperor of the universe, and 17, a murder bot who was designed to kill goku, are the ones left in charge of saving the universe.
Back when the episode first came out in Japanese, we all expected Frieza to pop up, but Android 17?? THAT was a shocker!
I was pleasantly surprised when I saw that in the Japanese episode ^^
Love how Beerus tries to play the "Goku won" card, when if that mattered, Goku would have been eliminated about 20 times already.
And if people actually died when they self destructed jiren woulda got a quad knockout if they didnt get saved a hundred times lol
The correct term is just Ultra Instinct not mastered. In later chapters Whis explains Goku is far from mastering UI (not gonna spoil the details) and also during this fight it's clear Goku hasnt mastered UI. The term MUI is wrong and many in the DB community make the same mistake. The correct names are UI Sign when he has black hair and UI with the silver hair.
Tbh you can't blame the DB community for being confused when they're constantly making name changes and keep adding/retconning stuff to ensure UI isn't overpowered. It was referred to as the Mastered, True, and Completed Ultra Instinct etc for the longest time
Finally someone said it. Not only are those the correct names they are also the official names. But i can understand she got it wrong because the Supreme Kai at the beginning says Goku 'seems' to have mastered UI. He got it wrong though. They should have kept that line the same as in the sub where the kai wonders if goku has mastered UI
@@rich355 Toei messed up the episode title including the word 'Mastered'. Completed Ultra Instinct makes sense because Goku has access to the complete version of UI in his white hair state, just not mastered. I'm still amazed that years after knowing this people call this MUI, we all know it isn't. Guess it's something that's gonna stay called this way until Goku really masters UI
@@rich355 'Constantly' is a bit of a stretch. Barely 6 months after this ep debut there was already an action figure collection made by Bandai including UI Sign and UI's name on the box. The community had lots of time to adjust to the official names since then. Still calling UI MUi these days is like calling SSJ Grade 3 SSJ2, it's simply wrong
The problem is that they advertised it as mastered at the time so we can really blame fans for that

The Japanese dub literally says "I won't forgive" instead of gonna pay when of course we know he will. Tournament has like 2 minutes left to so it won't take long. Dub fixed it, lol
Also in that first fight, the first hand-to-hand, Jiren attacks and Goku defends then finds an opening to counter. The second Jiren attacks and Goku rapidly turns the tables and Jiren breaks off. The final time GOKU attacks, Jiren defends.... but can't and is beaten. You can see Goku mastering UI on screen right there.

Goku is just that guy
From what we have seen only attacking the fighters in tge ring from the stands is punishable. Not the other way round. Zeno's don't care about eliminated fighters. They are excited by what's happening in the ring. Plus the one in the bleachers are hardly in any danger with 12 angels and 6 god of destruction sitting there.
And worst case, Vegeta should be able to do something about it. He may take damage, but the mortals would survive. But I'll assume Whis would have been the nice guy about it and protected them.
There’s also a barrier that would protect everyone in the stands anyways. We saw that firsthand from the first time Top used Hakai on Freiza
For all his talk of "Might makes right" Jiren is a warrior... he had admitted defeat, not just to himself but to his enemy, and then by luck or a twist of fate the tables turned and now his victory was shallow and undeserved. At the end of the day though... well survival or erasure so, yeah.
I think goku taking damage from the divine energy also kinda showed that might can have a cost. Mostly indirectly.

It's always kind of funny seeing people say Jiren should be disqualified for attacking the bystanders but that's never an actually established rule. They said bystanders can't attack contestants, but not vice versa.

I like that the show acknowledged how Goku's merciful and friendly nature towards his enemies is basically saving the universe now (17 and Freeza). I can finally see that's what makes his character special, even though it isn't that interesting
I didn't think there was a need for the show to openly acknowledge it like that. In a way even Bulma was an enemy of Goku at first.

Second Goku talking to Jiren about how his friends and family make him stronger is so great because it's true
Goku came to earth to take out the people he changed he found family and friends to put his trust in and they put their trust in him in turn
Goku trafomed so many lives
And that something Jiren refuses to he think that if he walks along he won't lose anyone again
But in pushing his new comrades away he never let him self heal
Goku and vegeta lost their original home but they found a new one
And that what makes Jiren so different from Goku is even in the very beginning of his journey in life he has always protected the people he loved

Honestly, the 7th has it at this point with 'moments left'. Three fighters in the ring to 1, with Jirren weak enough that running in three different directions would ensure that he could only beat one, if he could even catch them, before the clock runs out. But no... they've got to take him on directly. Dragonball logic. :)

The last episode is absolutely 🔥 🔥🔥fire. Everyone initially thought freeza attacked goku, but it wasnt long before we realized it was the god energy overwhelming him. Similar to the kaioken. And i hadn't thought of it before, but i wonder if the kaioken was king kais attempt to recreat ultra instinct for the lower gods(kais).
