  • In summer 2016, Steven King used an ancestry website to discover that he wasn’t biologically related to his grandparents, whom he admired so much, because his father was adopted. King joins Catherine St. Clair, a woman who also experienced an identity crisis after getting DNA test results, on Megyn Kelly TODAY to share his story. “You are a complete stranger to yourself,” said King.

  • @mrsjoeyfamous

    I understand his sentiment. It's like you don't know where you fit in the world. I know because I'm an adult that was adopted through the foster care system. I knew who my family was but I just never quite felt like it fit in anywhere in the world until I started my own family. Now with four kids of my own, it doesn't really matter to whom I was born, what matters is who was around and remains around. Family isn't blood or DNA family is where your heart is at peace and your soul full of love. Most of the people that fill my heart with peace and love have no biological connection to me.

    He didn't know his Dad, he died when he was 2 years old. Subconsciously he hasn't connected to the fact that his grandparents wasn't blood related. It is still a shock when it is confirmed. It is called human nature. It takes time to come to terms with the fact that his beloved grandparents aren't his blood relations. Totally get him. It turned around for him, which is good.

    • @wilnerdumerjean3604

      Susie Brown His father being adopted means that he is not related to the grandparents that he grew up with.

    • @june4033
      @june4033 Před 6 lety +6

      Susie Brown , did you not listen to what he was saying? He adored his grandparents. So because his father was adopted, meant that his fathers parents were not his biological grandparents. This can be so unsettling!! He since has acknowledged that, doesn’t change the relationship he has with them. But to discover that someone is not your flesh and blood can be devastating!

      It also prevents you from qualifying for entry into certain prestigious historical clubs in America. Once you are made aware of your status i.e. no longer biologically related ........some folks choose to begin a journey of self discovery. That is my experience. None of us "own" the biological ancestors but many are kept from "knowing" them. One excellent example of this is found in the case of the eldest child of United States senator from South Carolina James Strom Thurmond, Sr ......Essie Mae Washington-Williams.

    • @sharondoan1447
      @sharondoan1447 Před rokem

      I agree with you. Especially, maybe, in this man’s situation. Once he accepted/confirmed with family members that his biological father had been adopted by the Kings why was he devastated because he received that information via email ? That is how the process works. Those are the terms of the purchase of the DNA kit. All of us who have been lied to about our true parentage are deeply effected. Who am I? This is a question millions of today’s children ask. Who is my Daddy? Does your mother even know? According to those shows on television people copulate like rabbits without a thought in their head about pregnancy.

      Actually it does. We all have an inborn connection to blood relatives, so to take away that from someone takes away dignity and trust.

  • @serenblodwyn7914
    @serenblodwyn7914 Před 6 lety +5

    It is all about how each individual views concepts about 'blood' relations and extended family. Many, who do NOT have a close relationship with their blood relations, due to different personalities, family conflict etc., & have closer, loving relations with non blood relations and friends...., would NOT be particularly bothered they are not biologically linked with their grandparents or other blood relatives....because that "biological" link would NOT matter to their personal view of the world... It all comes down to how each individual views "family" & how they regard the biological link..... This is NOT about being wrong, verses being right....It's about how you, as an individual, view the concept of family; whether you place a 'priority' on biological connections over non biological (due to your individual family socialisation norms, personal thinking & belief system) etc. Some will experience an extreme sense of loss...will be traumatised etc.. Some, will still feel deeply connected to their newly defined "non blood family tie", and will look forward to the possibility of meeting new blood relations...... All the best to everyone...

    Someone said I don’t get it. I say the same thing, I don’t get it. From the time I was a teenager I felt like I was adopted because of the way I was treated. But I wasn’t adopted. What’s more important than your blood is the love your family shows to you. That’s more important than anything else. I would have, and I still would, trade my blood for more familial love.

      Violet May I agree that the man’s story was not set out clearly at all. I suspect he was being very reticent because he didn’t want the full story out for whatever reason. That’s fine but producers of this kind of segment should limit the stories they put on to those where the subject is willing to fill in the basics.

    I say when taking those tests, always expect the unexpected! That wy you're not completely surprised. I just did mine Saturday morning and sending it off tomorrow so let's see what the results are in 6 to 8 weeks! I am keeping my mindset on expecting anything. With how certain people are on both parents side are has helped me with that mindset. What I would probably be surprised with is if we are the regular run of the mill family with no hidden secrets.

    They made him look kinda stupid in the storytelling. It wouldve been better if they just first laid out all his family memories and then he took a test, found out he wasn’t related to his grandparemts and then recalling the time he overhears the conversation that his father was adopted....then everyhing dawned on him...
