I think there is a deeper meaning to the movie. His ugly face was not really ugly, it was merely a metaphor to show us his ugly soul, something that most of the girls picked up on. He got rejected because they all sensed there was something off about him... But the most vulnerable of them all, the one who thought she wasn't beautiful and deserved nothing special, fell for his lies. Him eating her in the end symbolises the abuse and emotional death the poor girl endured after the love bombing stopped -something all narcissists do to their victims when they secure them in their trap.
That's such an interesting perspective!

People seem to overlook an important detail: he has many name tags as trophies, which means that many women fell for him. So his face WASN'T such an obstacle to him finding love and he took out many women who would have happily defied social conventions because they felt attracted to him and wanted a connection
And that the main setting is "speed-dating"... Having a literal predator hunting in that setting feels a lot like dating aps that profit off of people being lonely and wanting a connection. Same bait, uh...different results.
I imagine the women he took home were disfigured like he was. Notice the other women wouldn't dare.

True. And a reminder not to judge a book by its cover - neither by his face nor by his neat fancy clothes and gentleman manners. Evil people can have manners, too. I supposed that something wasn't right with that seemingly poor disabled guy as soon as he complimented the woman that she was beautiful - without any restriction in the compliment. A fellow disfigured person who is genuine and knows of the everyday suffering of being despised for his looks would rather state something along the lines that he can see past it and would compliment other aspects of her, but not slap that obviously dishonest phrase into her face that he considers her overall "beautiful". Never blindly trust such a sweettalker.

@nice try167 That is certainly not what the movie intends to convey - note that there is no hint that the disfigured woman is bad either. But while you shouldn't assume people were monsters just because of hideous appearance, it is just as stupid to go for the other extreme and assume that anyone who suffers from a pitiful medical condition must automatically be a poor innocent angel. People can be evil regardless of their appearance. I see it more as a cautionary tale to not be too trusting and don't be blinded by charming manners. If the guy tries too hard to convince you that he is your soulmate during the first five minutes after he met you, he might not be entirely honest :-)

This is really good! It's not just horror, it has more meaning than that. It's as if your problems and faults in this were visible on the outside, and once Slash accepted Sarah for who they were regardless of their faults, that led to a false sense of security. Just because someone understands what you're going through and can relate does not mean they can't have ulterior motives. "Eating" the other person in this case could be a metaphor for an abusive relationship where a narcissistic person requires more and more attention, and eats away at the other person until they have nothing left. Love it.

some people think the moral is that you SHOULD judge a book by its cover, but I think it's more a commentary about how a person that evokes empathy isn't always a good person.

@Jorge Rojas how so? people aren't immune to feeling empathetic towards ugly people... but the point seems to be more that you may feel sorry for someone or relate to them but that doesn't necessarily make them a kind gentle soul. In my opinion the ugly appearance in this is more of a metaphor for trauma. They are both ugly but it points to feeling a connection to someone who suffers from the same pain... but someone who shares your trauma isn't always a friend.

See, I found this to be more of a macabre comedy than straight horror. The twist is basically a punchline. Awesome short, in any case.
Here's the great thing about this: It's not clear what the writer was "saying." There are a lot of lessons and interesting takeaways and they are all valid. This is because the author put something thoughtful and true up on the screen and left us to think about it.

Lesson of the day: Appearances can be deceiving but it is better to go with instinct if something too good to be true comes with a consequence
This was good. People are complex despite their outward appearance or delicate demeanor which is why its important to establish their motive. Its their wants and desires that makes them who they are. Which is why the 5 minute dating scenario was a perfect setting. Not enough time to establish someones true motive, and a "misunderstanding" ensues. Its cliché to say, but the true horror is our society's flaws and how they can be exploited. But this was done very well.

I've read some comments here that I generally agree with, like saying that not every person that evokes empathy is a good person, and that it's easier to fall for those who look like us (in many ways).
I would add to that an idea I've been thinking about for a long time, which is a sort of self-disenfranchisement. It appears that he only kills those who liked him, and leaving those who dislike him or are judgemental. Reminds me of those who are angry at society for whatever reason who end up destroying or mass-killing and hurting those sympathetic to them in the process.

@@sterenn726 I dated a girl that looked almost like he does, was very nice to her, got her a gift, and she decided she hated me from the start and drug me along a 5 mile hike up a large hill in a local park while pretending to be interested in me knowing that I had a knee injury and it was quite painful. And I had to go through about hundred "no's" to get that one "yes". Maybe if I ate her or something things would've turned out better. She already looked like hamburger helper anyway maybe tasted like it too, who knows.
