Carstairs SIREN IN ACTION! - Carstairs Junction (North /Siren D)

  • I have high standards, and I'm not 100% happy with the quality of the camera filming the siren! Maybe I'm being picky but there is a reason which I'll tell you about it in a future video, but for the meantime - my next SIREN SOUNDING video will definitely make up for it!!
    To film this siren took some careful planning, as I filmed three on this day.
    This is one of the CS8 series sirens made by Klaxon and is the same as the Broadmoor sirens. The Broadmoor sirens have a HIGH-LOW-HIGH-LOW tone to signify the 'ALERT' phase, and just a mono-tone for the 'ALL CLEAR'.
    So does this CS8 do the same thing? Find out in the video :)
    Thanks for watching! MORE TO COME...!
    WHY ARE THERE ESCAPE SIRENS?
    There are nine sirens installed in surrounding towns and villages of The State Hospital of Carstairs. The sirens warn residents of a missing person from the hospital (or a possible escapee). Persons should remain in their homes and keep their children supervised. Schools have their own procedures, which is where a few of the sirens are located.
    Patients at this psychiatric hospital are generally dangerous people who need specialist treatment and would be a danger to the public if they were treated in a standard hospital.

      Maybe the GP sirens replaced broken CS-8s and they stopped using Hi-Lo or maybe the other way around but probably the first way based on the fact that the nameplate on the CS-8s have the name before Klaxon.

      That's what I'm curious about, dampers can jam and given that Secomak went with two normally closed dampers... Unlike what Federal Signal went with a normally open damper and a normally closed one on the 3T22 siren... So if the CS8 has its two dampers stuck it'll become practically a glorified bench grinder.

  • @the_alex_ellis_channel6923

    It's apparent to me that some of the sirens in this network have been replaced. Does anyone know which ones are the original ones? Because I would hazard a guess that if the system originally had CS8's, then it is possible that it did once use the Hi-Lo tone, and could've been changed when sirens were replaced with non-dampered ones (since you can;t get ones with Dampers anymore, sadly).
    Only a theory, and I am expecting someone to prove otherwise in the replies at somepoint.....

    • @alfiewoolard2598
      @alfiewoolard2598 Před 5 lety +1

      I think it was because it was the most versatile siren at the time and the marketing men wanted to sell the most sophisticated (i.e most expensive) siren they could for all thir sirens needs. It was probably also because the two main signals, attack and all clear, were being used for the Cold War, so a third signal needed to be used. Considering where the GP-12s are in relation to the CS-8s on a siren map, I have a feeling they were added later on in the hospital's life.

      @@alfiewoolard2598 it's most likely thar the GP sirens have possibly replaced failed CS-8 units (after all, the CS-8 units are mostly from the 50s), but the mounting masts clearly look very new (as if the sirens were reinstalled in place...)

    • @alfiewoolard2598
      @alfiewoolard2598 Před 5 lety +1

      @@Alexis_du_60 They could have, but considering some of them are placed outside the nucleus of CS8s I would think they might be later installs as well as possible replacements. They couldn't have been installed at the same time because the 2 signal sirens we've seen already are Klaxon branded, whereas the CS8s are Secomak branded according to the tags on the siren's stator. I haven't pinned down when Secomak became Klaxon, but it was sometime in the mid to late '50s, if not later.

    • @Alexis_du_60
      @Alexis_du_60 Před 5 lety +1

      @@alfiewoolard2598 wouldn't the CS-8 slightly more expensive than the GP-6 or 12 because of the fitted dampers? Seems like Carstairs' system has many odd mysteries that just wait to be revealed... Still using a CS-8 (speaking of which, I wonder what happened to the units that were taken down... In Broadmoor) and not using it's Hi-Lo capacity seems a bit of a waste IMHO

    • @alfiewoolard2598
      @alfiewoolard2598 Před 5 lety

      @@Alexis_du_60 It might seem like a waste now, but the 2 signals sirens could produce were being used by the government because it was the Cold War. A third signal had to be used to warn of other things. Now, any signal can be used because we're not clashing with any other nuclear superpower. Because of this the expense wouldn't matter as it was the only way forward. A GP-8 or 12 is more cost effective, sure, but it didn't do the things the hospital required. Aggressive marketing could also be a very plausible reason (because the more expensive a siren is to sell = more profit overall = more money to use on other things). Broadmoor's sirens, once taken down, are either going to be scrapped or placed in a secure lot for some years until they're no longer assets of the government, because Broadmoor is Her Majesty's Prison.
