So Nick is kind of right about black people not getting sunburned, but also misses some stuff. Depending on your skin tone, you do have built in SPF, from baseline 3 up about 13 if you are extremely dark. You need about 30 SPF to block most (97%) of UV rays, so even extremely dark people need sunscreen.
Most very dark people don't "sunburn" because sunburns look different on people who are quite dark, and they often don't have redness. They still have the skin damage / peeling, and as a result they tend to get a lot more exposure, since they think they are fine.
That's also why so many black people get dangerous skin cancers (melanomas) unchecked, since they are harder to see. They tend to have much worse overall health outcomes with skin cancers, despite having less common skin cancers.
The more you know! Wear sunscreen, even if you are jet-black from Africa. Your skin will thank you. You need to reapply sunscreen often, especially when wet/sweating.
